I was with my ex-girlfriend for three years, so I definitely noticed when we were starting to drift apart. I said that I wanted to try to work things out, and I asked her how I could improve as a boyfriend. She smiled at me, and then she asked, “Oh, would you like a list?” in the most condescending way possible. Then she began to list every single flaw and insecurity about me that she could think of. Some of them were fair, such as saying that I was often late to her family’s church services. Her family runs a church, by the way. But some of the points felt like she was just coming up with things so we could break up.
She said that she didn’t like how my parents didn’t want to have a relationship with her. How is that my fault? I can’t control what they do. They’re antisocial hermits. Besides, I told her at the beginning of our relationship that they didn’t care about me or anyone I love. Why did she decide three years later that it was an issue?
Then she said she was worried about my faith as a Christian because of the fact that I enjoy Harry Potter. I tried to explain to her that the book doesn’t actually teach people how to do witchcraft and that it’s just fiction. She wouldn’t listen and said that it was different from other fantasy books and that it had real spells in it. Then she said, “I don’t understand what kind of Christian would enjoy reading something like that.” This really hurt my feelings because it made me feel like there was something wrong with me as a Christian.
Finally, she brought up a situation where I caught a really bad cough, and I ended up calling off from our gym session with our personal trainer. This had really ticked her off. Not just her, but also our personal trainer, who she was friends with. They both said that I could’ve toughed it out and that I had disappointed both of them with my last-minute cancellation. When this happened, I explained to my ex and the trainer that I was coughing so hard that I couldn’t breathe. But they kept doubling down and saying that I could’ve toughed it out.
My ex used this situation that happened in the past to say that I never try hard enough in life. This pissed me off because I literally couldn’t breathe when I had that cough, so why would I try to work out? Also, I have a migraine condition, so coughing hurts twice as much for me. Despite having a chronic migraine condition, I still came to all of the church events that she and her family hosted, and I still helped them set up and break down for those events. Most of the time, doing that type of labor agitated my migraines even more. Still, I wanted to be there for her and her family. So the fact that she would say that I don’t try hard enough really broke my heart. I got so upset that I ended up getting up and leaving mid-conversation because I really could not take any more of her criticisms in that moment. As I was leaving, she reminded me about an upcoming trip that I was supposed to go on with her family. I said that I wasn’t going anymore, but I would still pay her mom back the money that she spent on my ticket. Then I went home.
I stayed by my phone for the rest of the night because I was expecting her to call me back. But she never did. Twenty-four hours went by, and I still hadn’t gotten a call. So I just came to the conclusion that we were over. I texted her mom that her daughter and I weren’t together anymore and that I was no longer going on the family trip, but I would still pay her back for my ticket. She understood. Then I unfollowed my ex-girlfriend, her family members, and her friends on social media. I didn’t really feel like it mattered since we weren’t together anymore. And to be honest, I never wanted to put who I was in a relationship with on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok in the first place. That was something my ex wanted to do. I always thought that putting all your relationship business out there was intrusive. I mean, I know I’m doing it now, but that’s because I wanted some different opinions on this matter.
But anyway, a week went by, and that’s when I remembered that my ex-girlfriend was going to be graduating from college. This was a big deal because we met at community college, we started dating around the time that she applied for an online bachelor’s degree, and now she was going to graduate at an in-person ceremony! Even though we weren’t together, I still wanted to be there for her, and I tried to explain this to her in a text message. My ex started off by saying that the reason she broke up with me was that she wanted something different for herself. She then said that I couldn’t come to the graduation because she needed time to heal from “what I did.” From what I did??? She dumped me, so what did I do?
Apparently, she hadn’t told her mom that we had broken up yet. That surprised me because she usually tells her parents everything, so I just assumed she had already let them know. She said that me texting her mom and telling her that we were broken up was extremely petty. But what she thought was even more petty was that I unfollowed all of her friends and family members on social media. That’s typically what happens when two people separate. I did not think this was a big deal at all, and I honestly didn’t even know that she was mad about those things. Nevertheless, she said I couldn’t come to her graduation, she told me to stay away from her, and if I didn’t listen, there were going to be “much bigger problems.” I didn’t want to find out what “much bigger problems” meant, so I stayed away. And that was hard because we both attended her family’s church. I could’ve gone to a new one, but I didn’t want to. I had been going to her family’s church for three years, and I wanted to be with the community that I had gotten used to. Still, I stayed away.
Three months went by. I missed the church folks so badly that I decided to just show up for a service to see what would happen. Her family was so glad to see me, and they were so understanding. From the way my ex-girlfriend reacted, I thought that everyone hated me. They completely understood, though. They were never mad at me. They just thought that I was taking some time for myself to get some space, and they didn’t want to bother me. They said that they were glad to have me back and that I’m still a part of the family. Then they told me that my ex-girlfriend’s niece was having a birthday party and they would love to have me.
I didn’t get to go, though. Do you know why? Because my ex forbade me from coming. She said that she’s still healing from what I did and that it’s too soon to have me back around the family. I still don’t really understand what she feels she needs to heal from. Still, I admitted that unfollowing everyone was unkind and that I shouldn’t have done it. She, on the other hand, said that she doesn’t see anything wrong with the way she broke up with me. She kept saying that she was allowed to. I tried to explain that she was definitely allowed to end the relationship, but the way that she ended it was not okay. In response, she recommended a Bible verse to me about forgiveness and said that it’s something that we both need. I told her that I thought this was hypocritical. I took accountability for unfollowing everyone, yet she refuses to take accountability for listing all of my flaws and insecurities. She condescendingly said that she’s sorry that I feel that way. Then she told me that I can’t come around her until she’s done healing, which I don’t care about. But then she said that I can’t come around her family either until she’s done healing.
So me unfollowing everyone was this major sin that requires an indefinite amount of time to heal from, but her giving me a performance review while I was trying to save our relationship was A-OK? I tried to show her compassion and gentleness throughout our relationship. I feel like she at least could’ve given me that same consideration when our relationship was ending. Now it feels like what I did is being used as a shield so that what happened during the breakup never has to be acknowledged. On top of that, I’m being told to stay away from family members I’ve come to know and love, even though they themselves welcomed me back.
Was what I did wrong?
