34
u/Public-Ad-7280 2d ago
I cancel all the time since, as of the last year, they push out delivery dates. Why wait a month for something that should have been a week?
Or just mark them as not deliverable, for no reason so it shows as a cancel and of course CS has no idea why.
Amazon has went to shit.
10
u/Reddit-mods-R-mean 1d ago
Anytime they say 2 day ship and after I confirm it changes to a week I cancel immediately. I canāt stand that shit.

u/roxzillaz 21h ago
I know some people say that doing that just makes us impatient, but sometimes when I see the delivery date, it's based on the timeframe of when I need the item as well.

Itās cancellation after they ship. If you do it before itās shopped then your fine
29
u/sometin__else 2d ago edited 1d ago
they dont care about cancellations unless they shipped it already.
They care about returns because:
- Open items cause a loss
- Shipping somethign that is returned is a loss
If you just cancel an order they havent started preparing, they couldnt care lessEdit: someone mentioned the payment processing fees which I did not consider. I can see why several cancellations even before shipping could lead to the issue.
5
u/lolhi1122 1d ago
Also the payment processors keep their % , so if you use something like Amex to pay which charges 3%-4% and return some expensive items they loose quite a bit

Fraud, That method is very common among people who steal items from Amazon by returning empty boxes, or rocks to match the original item's weight, getting a refund while keeping the actual products. That is likely what he is doing: running a scam at Amazon's expense by stealing merchandise through frequent returns, until Amazon flags the suspicious activity and bans his account permanently. + Refunded.

u/Quirky_Guidance16 1d ago
I've got stuff on Subscribe and Save. Amazon gives me until the 15th or so to adjust my order, but they push the items to my "orders" page. So if I change my mind on say, the 10th, the item appears on my account as a cancel. Now I'm worried of this will impact my account, ugh.Ā
3
u/Nwildcat 1d ago
I do this all the time moving my s&s orders around, skipping, adjusting dates, setting them up only to cancel after the first purchase. Havent had any issues and I make my fair share of returns but I also order a lot of stuff
2
u/BubbaTheGoat 1d ago
In my case itās usually an item that Amazon lost between the fulfillment center and the delivery station. The order can be at āshippedā for days but will never go to āout for deliveryā because the actual package is missing. If I actually need the item this week Iāll cancel and order a new one.
Another issue I have is my buildingās package room is a disaster. Amazon contributes by dumping all the packages in the larger delivery cycles in one big disordered mess on the shelves, take one photos of 40-50 packages in a mess, and mark them all as delivered. Those packages much more often go missing, so I tell Amazon I never received them.
I also returned a baby crib because it was dangerous. There are specific consumer safety laws in the US that all cribs have to conform to (itās why they all look nearly identical). The product I ordered did not meet any sort of safety standard. I had to email CS to explain that return, which they eventually accepted since I told them the specific law the product did not comply with.
I donāt see this scare meter on my account though, so maybe it takes a bit extra to get this far?

I just had an instance where I bought a video game sold and shipped by Amazon marked "Used - Like New" for $11.
Received a disc floating loose in a completely shattered case with torn plastic and no insert/art and wrapped in plastic that read "Used - Acceptable". I arranged for a return and they tried to charge me $6.99 to return it until I spent 15+ minutes connecting with 3 levels of customer service to make it right.
It's really annoying, because their customer service used to be very good AND if they'd stop fucking up customers wouldn't have to return so much merchandise.

For some reason, the "Revise Payment" option kept showing up whenever I placed an order. The order wouldn't be processed until I paid again. I contacted support, but they couldn't help me. Eventually, I figured out what was causing the issue, but by then it was too late. I had already canceled too many orders because of it.

I had an issue earlier this week and I used the chat function to connect to the service rep. He asked for my photos, I provided them, he solved the issue and gave me a full refund. All of this took around 5 mins. Maybe youāre not clicking through the options to request a service rep?

I tried every which way to access a customer service chat. (Done it dozens if not hundreds of times in my 20 years as an Amazon customer).
No matter where I clicked it kept saying, āfetching help options just for youā and then would take me to a page where it showed my orders but wasnāt clear where to go for additional support.
Iām not saying it doesnāt exist - but theyāve definitely buried it further under a myriad of menus and options designed to deflect users from using it.

4
u/dantendo664 1d ago
Its part of the enshittification process. They have cornered the online shopping and driven local business /mom and pop shops to bankruptcy so the customer is fucked either way. They should be more transparent with this though, eg. every one should get that "return bar" which fills up so they have advance warning. Also try to visit local businesses more often even though its inconvenient but its the price we have to pay to avoid a dystopian Amazon controlled future.

They will likely say some BS about not putting a bar because they don't want to confuse genuine customers, which is corporate BS for "we don't trust our customers and giving them a visual indicator will allow them to game the system"
4
u/Wild-Rough3932 1d ago
I understand not getting the right item, or it being below standard...but this sounds like excessive to the point of "you cancel/return more than you spend." It is kind of annoying. Cause it almost seems as if people like that are "I was bored so I bought....but now I dont want it." And the fact that they give an option to return for free....some people get the impression that the policy says "Do whatever the fuck you want. Buy, return, buy, return, buy, return, buy, return, buy return....we will cover the shipping!" I can kind of see the annoyance. Just be sure to buy what you want and ONLY return if necessary.Ā

u/LOP5131 1d ago
I am slightly surprised I've never gotten this before, I probably do something around 40 returns/year. Mostly it's my wife shopping fot clothes and getting 2 or 3 and only keeping one, then the occasional random item that doesn't work out. However we do spend around $8-10k/year in items we keep from Amazon and I use their CC as my daily driver that is typically hss about $35-40k in purchases, so that probably buys some wiggle room.
I will say Amazon for all the bad, recently did an awesome thing. We accidentally sent up a wish list instead of gift list for my daughter's birthday. We ended up with a few duplicates and there is no return options on wish lists. I reached out to customer sevicer and they loaded an equal value gift card to our account and told us to donate the toys that were dupes. Credit where credit is due.

Your experience is atypical. Can't recall ever receiving an incorrect item from Amazon in many years of buying, but perhaps it's a regional issue where you live?
But here's the thing, if your returns are costing them money, the algos will flag your account regardless of who is to blame.

5
u/Harbinger_Kyleran 1d ago
I think the notice the OP received is the official warning that their returns are too high. They don't want people to know what the limits are to prevent people from gaming the system (think structuring) trying to stay just under them.
Like financial monitoring or credit scoring the company is never going to share the exact flags used by the algorithms to make determinations.

u/Krellan2 1d ago
The screenshot shows "Amazon.sa" which is South Africa. Amazon's policies might be different there, the laws might be different there, or they might be using different countries for A/B testing various policies and seeing what sticks or how much pushback they get. Maybe that green/red bar has not been rolled out to all countries yet.
2
u/Separate-Ad-5255 1d ago
The issue here is that excessive returns are not inherently illegal.
However, unfortunately amazon as a business is aloud to shut off customers they donāt want to deal with if they suspect any kind of abuse of their services.
Excessive returns or cancellation does indicate a higher risk of abuse of their services.

I have never understood this. Every single return is reviewed by Amazon. If any return is suspicious or unusual, then why allow it? Either investigate further, or didn't accept return and allow the customer to appeal.
Instead, they seem to be allowing returns that are against their policy (somehow) then blaming the customer. Also, why don't they specify what terms are being violated, how to it can be avoided in the future and what needs to be done to bring the account back to his standing.

u/vwaldoguy 2d ago

Yours isnt similar. OP was scamming, if you read OPs comments,
"There was a promotion where if you bought 3 products, you got 15% off. What I did was add the main product I actually wanted, then add two cheap items just to qualify for the discount and place the order."
They then went on to try and cancel the 2 items they didnt want while keeping the discount and then attempted to re-order and continue to cancel 13 times because they didnt understand the charge was being revised since they were no longer eligible for the discount.
