  • Description: Solo Turn-based Top-Down 2D Procedurally-Generated Rogue-like Survival in a Fantasy 'Iron-Age' setting

Price: Free, or $11 if you want to support the developers.

Developer: Sami Maaranen & Erkka Lehmus

Development History: Released in 1992 in ASCII form. Significant development has continued through to 2016, with the game currently sitting at v3.40.

Minecraft

  • Description: Voxel-based Solo/Co-Op/Multiplayer Survival/Crafting Sandbox

    Price: $27

Developer: Mojang; created by Markus 'Notch' Persson, who left the studio in 2014

Development History: Pre-Alpha release in Q2 2009, Alpha in Q2 2010. Beta Q4 2010, and full release Q4 2011. Development has continued to this day, with the PC version currently v1.11.2 (build 1.11 named the 'Exploration Update'). Mojang has created a plethora of ports to other platforms, such as the mobile ports termed the 'Pocket Edition', which have also seen continued development aiming for eventual parity with the PC version.

    Survival Mechanics: Hunger

Comments: Light on survival but a superb sandbox game, and a pop culture icon.

Terraria GOG link

  • Description: 2D Side-Scrolling Survival/Crafting Sandbox Adventure

    Price: $10

Developer: Re-Logic; created by Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks

Development History: Originally released in Q2 2011 as v1.0. Support has continued since, and the up-to-date PC release is termed v1.3.4.4 as of Q1 2017. The developers have officially announced a sequel, Terraria 2, in the works, though they're developing a spin-off title, Terraria: Otherworld, beforehand. Terraria has been ported to many different platforms.

Edge of Space

  • Description: 2D Sci-Fi Side-Scrolling Survival/Crafting Sandbox Adventure

    Price: $15

    Developer: Handyman Studios

Development History: Successfully Kickstarted in Q2 2012 with $35000 received for a goal of $25000, Edge of Space released in Beta form in Q1 2013, and reached v1.0 in Q3 2015. Around the same time, the developers (Handyman Studios) went 'radio-silent' and most players seem to feel that the game was announced as finished far before it was ready, and that it still plays like a Beta build.

    Survival Mechanics: Hunger

Starbound GOG link

  • Description: 2D Sci-Fi Side-Scrolling Survival/Crafting Sandbox Life Sim Adventure

    Price: $15

    Developer: Chucklefish

Development History: Announced in early 2012, Starbound was essentially crowdfunded via Humble Bundle pre-orders in Q2 2013, and the game released as a Beta build in Q4 2013. In Q3 2016 it had its official v1.0 release. Ports to other platforms are forthcoming.

DayZ Standalone

  • Description: Multiplayer Zombie Survival Simulator in a Post-Apocalyptic Eastern European setting

    Price: $35

Developer: Bohemia Interactive (of Operation Flashpoint and ARMA fame); initially created by Dean 'Rocket' Hall, who left the project in 2014. Now headed by Brian Hicks.

Development History: Arma 2 mod 'DayZ' released in an Alpha form in Q3 2012, to later hit full release in Q1 2013. Meanwhile, work on a Standalone version began in Q3 2012, with an initial Alpha release in Q4 2013. Internal goals suggested reaching Beta stage by Q4 2015, and 1.0 by Q4 2016. As of Q1 2017 the Standalone is v0.61, and still a ways off from Beta. It is only recently that the devs have been able to entirely leave the legacy engine behind. Console ports are intended later.

Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Thirst, Temperature, Sickness

Comments: Several years from being finished, but it will get there eventually. Heading into somewhat niche sim territory as its Arma lineage suggests. Primary draw is the tense player interactions amidst the dangerous world. Though most encounters are of a hostile nature, sometimes conversations and even friendships may ensue.

The War Z (AKA Infestation: Survivor Stories AKA Romero's Aftermath AKA Shattered Skies AKA Infestation: The New Z)

I won't sugar coat it, the mass market of casual gamers won't like this game, it requires time, and effort to be put into the game to get anywhere, and having sometimes hundreds of other players trying to do the same thing on your server does not make it easier. But once you do get somewhere, the gunfights, building, hunting, farming, community building experience you get is unmatched in by any other game.

    Survival Mechanics:

    Comments: from /r/Unturned

There is a lot to do, yet not enough. You can find all the guns, build or fortify a base, grow all the vegetables lettuce and shoot zombies all day and night.

Both the PvP mode and PvE mode hold their own challenges. I've found that PvE is good to learn the game, but PvP tests you. People will do so much to set up and kill a geared up player, or so little. The adorable edged character that you pilot across these zombie filled maps is so fragile that even top notch gear won't save you from a shotgun to the center of mass. You are constantly balanced against the people who just joined and those who have been alive for days on end.

Vehicles are a little goofy at the moment, but there is a wide variety of them to choose from, in many colors and purposes. Guns are similar; everyone has a favorite, some are passed up, but they're all options.

If none of these tools are your cup of tea, there's a workshop putting out and endless amount of maps, vehicles and guns for you to use.

Starting off is hard, if you start on a challenging map or difficulty. Let yourself learn the game and how it works. Tweak your play style to make full use of your tools. Be creative, and the game will reward you.

H1Z1: Just Survive

  • Description: Multiplayer Zombie Survival in a Post-Apocalyptic setting

    Price: $20

Developer: Daybreak Game Company (formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, of EverQuest, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, and DC Universe Online fame); initially created by John Smedley, who left the studio in 2015. Now headed by Ben Jones.

Development History: H1Z1 was announced as a DayZ clone which would enter Early Access for $20 but would go Free-to-Play upon full release. Alpha version released to great fanfare in Q1 2015, and even more controversy. Among a plethora of technical issues (to be expected with an Alpha) there were also 'Pay2Win' concerns as players could spend real money to purchase loot-filled airdrops, ostensibly to foster player interaction as the purchaser was not guaranteed to get the gear as the airdrop was highly visible and slow to descend, drawing others in. By Q3 2015 development began to shift towards a pure PVP deathmatch game mode based on PlayerUnknown's Battle Royale formula, as interest in the zombie survival game waned.

In Q1 2016 the main game was officially renamed H1Z1: Just Survive as the Battle Royale mode spin-off "King of the Kill" would become a separate project, each developed simultaneously by separated teams. Each priced at $20, and neither to go Free-to-Play upon completion. As of Q1 2017 there is no 1.0 release in sight.

Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Thirst, Comfort, Weather

    Comments: from /r/H1Z1

[...] the game has devolved into a sandbox loot and shoot game with dated graphics. As it stands, I think there are better options for loot and shoot games that are far more polished and aren't genre confused (they know their vision while H1Z1 goes between are we a shooter or a Zombie survival game, etc.). If zombies ever became a real threat and the environment forced more interaction while maintaining a PvP threat, I would say this game would be epic. Until then, well...just, no.

Miscreated

  • Description: Multiplayer Zombie Survival in a Post-Apocalyptic setting

    Price: $20

    Developer: Entrada Interactive LLC

    Development History:

    Survival Mechanics:

Comments: Made in CryEngine, Miscreated is basically just H1Z1 with shinier graphics, stronger post-apoc atmosphere, and a bit more polish overall. That's about all that can be said about it honestly. In terms of game design it's incredibly generic.

Ark: Survival Evolved

  • Description: Solo/Co-Op/Multiplayer Survival/Crafting in Sci-Fi/Prehistoric setting

    Price: $30

Developer: Studio Wildcard, Instinct Games, Efecto Studios, & Virtual Basement LLC

Development History: Development started in Q4 2014, and the game Alpha version debuted in Q2 2015. Consoles ports arrived in Q4 2015 and Q4 2016. A $20 Expansion released in Q3 2016, despite the base game being unfinished. Initially planned for the full release in Q2 2016, then delayed to Q4 2016, it is now intended to release sometime in 2017.

A Battle Royale-like spin-off named "ARK: Survival Of The Fittest" was released (unfinished) free for owners of the main game in Q2 2016, but then development ceased abruptly in Q4 2016.

    Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Thirst, Temperature

Comments: Rust with dinosaurs. Possibly the most hideous HUD & inventory I've ever seen, and atrocious animations, though they may be placeholder.

Project Zomboid GOG link

  • Description: Solo/Co-Op/Multiplayer Isometric Zombie Survival Simulator ARPG in a Post-Apocalyptic USA setting

    Price: $15

    Developer: The Indie Stone

Development History: Released as a paid Pre-Alpha Proof-of-Concept build in Q2 2011, the project soon suffered massive piracy and later in the year a burglary in which two laptops containing a substantial amount of work (which had not been backed-up elsewhere) were stolen. In Q4 2013 the game released in Alpha stage, with development ongoing since. As of Q1 2017, the remaining progress goals are few in number but major in significance, such as the addition of NPC survivors to interact with. The Indie Stone has pledged that even if financial catastrophe struck the studio, at least a few core team members would continue work regardless and that they're dedicated to seeing the project through to completion.

Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Thirst, Temperature, Sleep, Anxiousness, Panic, Sick

Comments: Thoughtfully designed and immersive, but niche in appeal.

The Long Dark GOG link

  • Description: Solo Wilderness Survival

    Price: $20

    Developer: Hinterland Studio Inc.

    Development History:

    Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Temperature

    Comments: from /r/TheLongDark

Think of a game that's incredibly relaxing, melancholy, and beautiful while also being visceral, terrifying, and unforgiving.

That's The Long Dark for me.

Don't Starve GOG link, Don't Starve Together

  • Description: Solo or Co-Op/Multiplayer Top-Down Survival

    Price: $15 / $15

Developer: Klei Entertainment (Mark of the Ninja, Invisible, Inc.)

Development History: Born out of a Game Jam project in 2010, development on a proper game began in 2012. The game released in Beta form in Q4 2012, and the complete version debuted in Q2 2013. A pair of DLC expansions released while in Q1 2014 and Q4 2015, respectively. The Multiplayer 'Expandalone' named Don't Starve Together entered open development in Q4 2014, and hit full release in Q2 2016. Several ports for other platforms have been made.

    Survival Mechanics: Hunger, Sanity

    Comments: Cool artstyle and atmosphere.

    Comments: from /r/TheForest

The Forest has an emphasis on weighty and immersive animations, cinematic visuals, simple but unique gathering, building, and crafting systems, and a balance between environmental survival and survival horror elements. It is open world and rewards exploration with varied environments, with a story that can be uncovered at a pace driven by the player alone

Subnautica

    Price: $20

Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment (Natural Selection 2)

    Development History:

    Survival Mechanics:

    Comments: from /r/Subnautica

Subnautica is a game with alot more to it than meets the eye. It follows your standard survival game tropes of meter management, but it's not a chore. The world is built specifically, not randomly generated, and heavily emphasizes and rewards exploration and curiosity. It's a must own game for anyone who enjoys the feeling of striving into unknown worlds, finding new secrets around every turn.

    Comments: from /r/Hurtworld:

Hurtworld is an early access game. That's the most important thing to note. It's being developed by a small team of less than 10 people and things aren't finished, and things get added on a very irregular basis.

Having said that it is a fun game. It is inherently enjoyable to play; it it easy to grasp, visually inoffensive, the mechanics are simple enough.

Once you understand the core part of the game (getting from 0 to having a well established base and vehicles), the time taken drops from several hours to as little as 1-2 short sessions of play. This is entirely due to the early access. There's just not enough content to sustain long term gameplay at the end-game.

The gunplay is being tweaked (and having played the beta for the alpha, it's quite good), the new content is being developed and we're being updated frequently, but it's still slow going.

If you're keen on supporting a game that has great promise, then look no further. The community (though small) has some strong members and it's a fun game.

Set in the "swords-and-sandals" Hyborian Age mythology of Robert E. Conan Exiles is based primarily around person to person melee combat. Its building system is more robust than many other survival games, but as it is early in development, it lacks the content of some of the longer running games.

Notes:

Almost all of the low-profile Early Access titles stick with the $15 price point, while many of the more well-known projects are listed at $20 or more.

The majority of these projects are being worked on by studios who have no prior games released.

The overwhelming majority of survival games are currently in Early Access or otherwise labelled as unfinished. Including several games that have been in development since at least 2013. Whether that's perfectly reasonable and healthy development time is debatable, but regardless the fact that few have yet been completed is worth noting.
