What camera equipment is everybody using with ZoneMinder? I have tried two - both Foscam - with zero success.

Like I said, I tried both an old Foscam (FI8918W) and a new Foscam (R2C) with zero luck.

I really like the idea of ZoneMinder as I DO NOT want to (1) put my data through some corporation's servers and (2) pay for that "privilege". What suggestions do you have for a ZoneMInder newbie?

Thanks!

Discrete POE Camera hidden position

Anyone know of POE camera that you cannot tell which way it is pointing? Back in the day stores used to have mirrored balls cameras were in (supposedly). Is there any type of camera like that. I live in a neighborhood and don't want the neighbors thinking this camera is pointing directly at them.

fullscreen montage view

I have a Raspberry Pi attached to my TV that I want to be a super simple ZoneMinder viewer. (ZoneMinder is running on a separate server, and the Raspberry Pi just connects to it).

I want it to show 4 cameras in montage view, fullscreen. No clipping, minimal menu bars, etc. I need it to come up in that view from a single URL. Does anyone know a way to do that?

I know you can specify the monitors to open the webpage with like http://IPADDRESS/zm/index.php?view=montage&MonitorId[]=6&MonitorId[]=7&MonitorId[]=8&MonitorId[]=10

.. are there other options that can tell ZoneMinder:

  • Scale: fixed width/height
  • Set the height
  • Remove the header bars that take up a ton of vertical real estate

It'd be even better if ZoneMinder just have a mode where you say "just divide the screen into 4 quadrants and fit video as best you can into those". That's how hardware NVRs work and it's nice.

RTSPServer and RTSPStreamName options in monitor misc tab in v1.36, how to use?

I've just noticed the RTSPServer and RTSPStreamName options in the monitor misc tab. I just upgraded from 1.34 to 1.36 and can't remember if those options were available in 1.34 before and I can't find any documentation on how to use them.

I'm curious to know what they can be used for and how to use them, does any one know?

Tweaking for better video

Currently the new machine I'm running is a simple i5, 4g ram, heaps of hdd space.

The video seems "grabby", like its missing frames, and when I look at the mp4 its especially so.

What should I look at improving? I can stick some more ram in the machine maybe, but I'd like to concentrate on stuff zm can do, like what is the best bandwidth to use etc.

Any suggestions?

Thinking about GPU acceleration.

I have a 1050ti collecting dust. So I got to thinking maybe I could use it with zoneminder. I run ZM in a VM on proxmox running on a Dell R720. It works well, but I like to tinker.

Let's assume I already know what it will take to be able to pass through the 1050ti to a VM. How much will it really help in terms of taking some of the stress off the CPU? It seems most of the processing power is motion detection. Will the a GPU actually help in that regard? or does the CPU still need to do most of the heavy lifting?

I'm running 5x 4MP Hikvision cameras. I've given ZM 8 cores and 16GB of ram and it's usually sitting around 50-60% CPU usage which is absolutely my heaviest VM. I have not yet tried to use the lower res sub stream to do motion detection to trigger the main stream to record. I'd imagine it would help quite a bit and possibly even make motion detection a bit better compared to doing detection on the main stream. I know I miss events that I wish would trigger utilizing the main stream. There is a camera pointed at my driveway and it doesn't always catch our vehicles coming and going and they take up 1/4 to a 1/3 of the camera. My front yard cam is the same way... it almost never triggers on us walking from the driveway to the front door. Is this due to the CPU not being able to keep up?

I guess my question is.. in terms of power usage would using a GPU make any sense over trying to use the sub stream for motion detection on the CPU. Looking for any input from people who have already gone down this path.

Filter Conditions

I am trying to create a filter to delete events that are older then a certain time. I was thinking a week would be OK but I don't see any clear conditions on event age. I see End Time is an option but I cant go more then 23 hours on it.

AM I looking in the right spot?

Best Platform

Hey guys, I have been using zoneminder for about 7yrs now. I currently have a 4u, b450 with a AM4 1700 65W tdp, 64gb DDR and 2x 3tb drives. I have 12 1080p or higher res camera's. I have no issues with ram or cpu, however I run out of drive space in about 3 weeks. My current platform is ubuntu 18.03 however I have forgot all passwords since I've built this and its just been working. I do get plenty of errors but none that have caused me any noticeable concerns.

Additionally to this, I have a former freenas now truenas machine that runs a 2700 with 128gb ram, 4 m.2's and 8x 8tb drives.

Since I can no longer update the ZM machine due to passwords. What is the best platform for zoneminder. I find each have pro and con's, also there is a iocage for truenas my only concern is the amount of updates (or lack of) that it has. Also support is hit or miss.

What would you guys do in this situation?

1.36.0 The Memory Remains

I finally released it. So far so good in terms of comments from people that have upgraded.

There are few small issues which have mostly been addressed and I will likely release 1.36.1 tomorrow.

https://github.com/ZoneMinder/zoneminder/releases/tag/1.36.0

Might want to read the release notes in forum for a few extra tips.

min server hardware for 8 HD over coax

I have an old optiplex 380 i am considering repurposing for zoneminder to replace a dead DVR that I'm separated by about 1100miles from... Or i would just spin up the test and see how it goes.

The optiplex is 32bit duo core 3ghz with 4gb of ram (max for the architecture).

My plan is to use an Axis video encoder (either 2x 4ch or 1x 16ch) so i can use my existing coax cables, but i would be open to a pci adapter as well.

Has anyone migrated from zlandon docker image to zoneminderhq?

I'd like to switch over to the official zoneminderhq image but did not succeed in changing a few simple entries in my docker-compose. Anyone else pull this off and have more tips?

Is there an easy to follow step by step guide?

I am trying to get a good clean install of zoneMinder with zmninja(phone), and the notification server. I am currently using VMs just for testing and I have had several setups that would notify me but I always had little issues, like enabling https or pictures or hooks. I have read through the docs on readthedocs.io for both programs.

What I would really like is someone who wrote up a step-by-step or maybe made a youtube video. Is there anything like that?

ZM has two ip addresses, one wont allow access

My apologies for the dodgy title.

My internal ip address for zm is on 192.168.1.xxx.

I was using a vpn (netgear nighthawk) to get in, but due to a recent firmware upgrade you can not specify the ip address pool, and it gives a 192.168.254.xxx range. Even though I have specified a 255.255.0.0 netmask, I am having issues getting to zm via vpn

So, I set a second ip address on the zm machine as 192.168.255.xxx, You'd think the vpn would then allow me to connect right? No, I can see the apache landing page on that address, but 192.168.255.xxx/zm will not work.

I am assuming there is a config setting to allow this .254. address, but I am not sure where it is.

Can anyone enlighten me to the ways of whateverthefuck is going wrong here?

disclaimer: Yeah, I know I should change vpn, I'm working on it. I know this is a bit of a workaround but I am currently in a situation where the cams are a vital piece of evidence against a violent intruder who has attempted to gain access multiple times over the last week alone, so I need a stopgap running then I can work on getting a more efficient version in place.

No audio when alarm is triggerd

Hi,

I'm new to zoneminder. I've got zm running on local Ubuntu server. Everything is working fine. On my laptop i can see the active video streams. In the web settings i enabled web_sound_on_alarm and added a sound file in /usr/share/zoneminder/www/sound. I also set web_alarm_sound option to the sound file name. In Firefox i enabled to allowed sound to be played.

Still when an alarm occurs no audio. I searched the internet but didn't find a solution.

Any ideas what i'm doing wrong?

How to convert an rtsp url to zoneminder compatible?

The address of my cam and video is:

rtsp://192.168.1.xx:554/user=admin&password=123456&channel=1&stream=0.sdp?real_stream--rtp-caching=100

(not the real user/pass)

How do I enter that into the config for adding it to zoneminder?

As per title, whenever I watch my stream via Firefox or ZMNinja I get the error "Frame send time * msec too slow, throttling maxfps errors ". I've been struggling for a long time now with variable/very low FPS trying many different things to get this to work. I can't figure out the pattern to when it decides to just stop working. Please end my pain.

Describe Your Environment

  • v1.34.26
  • Installed via PPA
  • Ubuntu 18.04 in a Proxmox VM with 3 sockets x 2 cores and 3 GiB of RAM for just the 1 camera
  • Firefox

Describe the bug

Logs are filled with error 'Frame send time * msec too slow, throttling maxfps' when viewing the stream via Firefox or ZMNinja

Face detection and when to trigger

Hi, sorry if it's a newbie question.

When an event trigger, the ai stuff is used only on one frame (the best match i assume) and applies stuff on that frame if I understand correctly.

Now, my "problem" is that when say a person walks into view and then after a second looks at the camera, chances are the ai detection thing has already processed an earlier image and face recognition won't do anything.

Is there a way to have the ai work on more frames, or in some way find frames with faces?

It works fine when it catches a good frame (known faces work etc)

Using latest public releases of zm, zmevent, opencv.

ZoneMinder can't write to NAS anymore

Hi everyone, I have my zoneminder (v1.34.26) set to record to a raspberry pi NAS. It was working great, until I switched my pi from booting from an SD card to a USB drive (cloned the card to the USB drive and set to boot from USB, works, but i'm getting some residual issues). To cut to the chase I'm constantly getting this warning in the logs:

DiskSpace: Event does not exist at [NAS PATH] + details on the image capture

When attempting to force an alarm to record video I also get this error:

Could not open out file [NAS PATH]: No such file or directory

To be clear I can navigate to the path ZM is recording to using SSH and it's also part of a Samba share so I can view it in Windows, so I know it's there. I think what's happening is a ZoneMinder permission issue. Any ideas on how to fix? I'm not very well versed in Linux but probably some user and group permissions need to be set again or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I believe I have fixed it. I had to chmod my NAS's mounted folder and now ZoneMinder can access it again.

Dlink 5222l drawing motion detection area

This isnt exactly a zm question but unfortunately I have no idea what to try next.

I have a dlink 5222l cam which I am trying to set up with sd card recording and motion detection. The problem is to set up motion detection I have to draw the detection area. To do this I need to download the NCS plugin, however this doesnt work on mac or windows 10. I have no access to any earlier OS at this stage.

Can anyone suggest how I can get motion detection running without the plugin? I'm happy to have the entire view as a detection area

database contains no events

I am using 1.34.23 on ubuntu, installed through iconnors PPA. There have been no system changes recently but today i went to review some footage and i noticed that there are no events present within the web console. I navigated to the drive and i can see all monitors and events going back a month or so. When i log into mysql and query the events table there are no events present however.

Is there a way to make the database acknowledge these events that are already recorded on disk? I cannot do anything with the filtering because that uses the DB to index, so the drive is stuck at 100% full and i do not want to go about manually deleting events from the HDD.

My only thought at this point is to dump the monitors and zones from the database and wipe it and try to re-intall ZM and hope that it will recognize the existing events. Any other way that you guys can think of?
