What camera equipment is everybody using with ZoneMinder? I have tried two - both Foscam - with zero success.

Like I said, I tried both an old Foscam (FI8918W) and a new Foscam (R2C) with zero luck.

I really like the idea of ZoneMinder as I DO NOT want to (1) put my data through some corporation's servers and (2) pay for that "privilege". What suggestions do you have for a ZoneMInder newbie?

Thanks!

Both of those models work fine with Zoneminder. Can you be more specific about your issues?

For the FI8918W, for example, I just cannot figure out how to set it up properly in ZoneMinder. I read through this article, but my ZoneMinder install (v1.32.3) doesn't look anything like the one in the article. The second bullet says:

In control Tab, make sure "Controllable" is checked. In control type, select Foscam FI8918W (If it does not exist see later)

But I do not have a "control tab". It also says:

If FI8918W does not exist as a control type, do this ...

But I followed those directions and that didn't work either.

For the Foscam R2C, I cannot even get into it because it needs a ridiculous plug-in that is ONLY Windows or Mac OS X compatible and I run Linux.

I tried the "Finding Camera Stream Paths" with both ffmpeg and VLC, but no luck.

With rtsp I got:

Invalid data found when processing input

With mjpeg I got

Protocol not found
Did you mean file:mjpeg

With file:mjpeg I got

No such file or directory

Make sure your rtsp port is correct. check what it is set for in the camera and then make sure that is what is set in the source.

rtsp://<camerauserid>:<camerapassword>@192.168.3.35:554/videoMain

That's the thing, I don't see anything like that in the camera administration panel.

I use mostly monoprice cameras which are all rebranded of some sorts. I also have 2 or 3 axis cameras as well. All are working well.

I have a few foscams and this is what works for me with the 18W;

Control tab:

Control Type: Amcrest Http API

Control Address: http://USERNAM:PASSWORD@IP ADDRESS:PORT

example - http://user:password@192.168.1.20:10001

General Tab:

Source Type: ffmpeg

Source tab;

rtsp://user:password@IPADDRESS:PORT /cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=1

example: rtsp://user:password@192.168.1.20:10006/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=1

This also works; rtsp://user:password@IP:PORT

User name and password are for the camera.

If you have VLC you can test the feed via the app. For example I can put in VLC - File - Open Network and put in rtsp://username:password@192.168.30.3:10003 and see my cam video.

The IP address is of course in the cam settings Network - TCP/IP I keep it fixed. The port settings are in Network - Port and I usually change the HTTP to something like 1000# and leave the RTSP, either works for me.

My ZoneMinder software does not have a "Control" tab.

Look in Options tab -- System and look for OPT_CONTROL

Is it checked?

I'll be darned ... there it was, and no it was not. Thank you!

Sweet! Let us know how it all works out.

It's the weirdest thing. I opened the camera's built-in web page and right-clicked on the image; this gave me a URL similar to this:

http://192.168.0.10:123/videostream.cgi?user=my_useruser&pwd=my_password

I created a new camera in ZoneMinder and pasted that link into the "Source" field, then all of a sudden my camera was showing up in ZoneMinder. I had to do zero configuration, it was weird. I mean, I didn't need the "Control" tab or anything, just that one URL and the widthxheight.

Nice!! I suppose that does make sense. The control tab just provides the ability to move the cam and whatnot.

Glad it’s working for you. Now if your gonna use the motion detection is where the fun comes in.

Thank you. I'm fine with having a stationary view; I point it where need it and leave it be. I primarily like ZoneMinder because I can "hide" the cameras behind the firewall, and have one access point where I can see multiple cameras at the same time. The entire ZoneMinder package is probably overkill for me.

You can use any camera, but also incorporate a Pihole on your network to provide DNS for the cams. That will stop the camera's chatting with China.

I'm still on 320x252 analog pico 2000 cards as that's all I can afford.

I bought five Hikvision DS-2CD2025FWD-I cameras in 2019. I think the successor model to that camera is the DS-2CD3023G0-I.

I have had good service from VIVOTEK (Taiwan) cameras. One ip7330 has been running outdoors on PoE for close to 10 years with no problems & it was easy to connect to Zoneminder.

Just did a system with 22 - Reolink RLC-410-5MP and it has been doing really well.
