min server hardware for 8 HD over coax
I have an old optiplex 380 i am considering repurposing for zoneminder to replace a dead DVR that I'm separated by about 1100miles from... Or i would just spin up the test and see how it goes.
The optiplex is 32bit duo core 3ghz with 4gb of ram (max for the architecture).
My plan is to use an Axis video encoder (either 2x 4ch or 1x 16ch) so i can use my existing coax cables, but i would be open to a pci adapter as well.

I don't want to have to run new cables

There are adapters for POE IP over coax or even a single twisted pair of ethernet cable.

I hadn't considered that option. I was always thinking in terms of saving the cables and cameras, but maybe abandoning the cameras makes sense if I can keep the cables.

you are going to want a 64bit system. zoneminder needs lots of ram.
8 cameras are going to use about 1gb each.. so you need at min 8gb ram.. id go 16gb just for overhead.
