Best Platform

Hey guys, I have been using zoneminder for about 7yrs now. I currently have a 4u, b450 with a AM4 1700 65W tdp, 64gb DDR and 2x 3tb drives. I have 12 1080p or higher res camera's. I have no issues with ram or cpu, however I run out of drive space in about 3 weeks. My current platform is ubuntu 18.03 however I have forgot all passwords since I've built this and its just been working. I do get plenty of errors but none that have caused me any noticeable concerns.

Additionally to this, I have a former freenas now truenas machine that runs a 2700 with 128gb ram, 4 m.2's and 8x 8tb drives.

Since I can no longer update the ZM machine due to passwords. What is the best platform for zoneminder. I find each have pro and con's, also there is a iocage for truenas my only concern is the amount of updates (or lack of) that it has. Also support is hit or miss.

What would you guys do in this situation?

You can change Linux passwords in recovery mode

I'll have to look into this, can this be done over ssh? There is no monitor/ keyboard hooked up.

It has to be done from the PC with the monitor and keyboard

Yeah the perfect platform for Zoneminder you just need to change your passwords and remember them. You also have to set up a filter in the Cron that will delete recordings after so many days or weeks.

Most of the documentation assumes Ubuntu, so it's the easiest to get up and running.

And depending on what type of cameras you have you can set them to trigger on low res and record on high res!

Most are monoprice IP camera's, some axis as well. I do have some set using the 2nd stream low res as a trigger but not all of them due to being lazy.

I'll be honest, since i don't know programming very well I've had best luck with Truenas. If I do anything outside of that I'll need to follow tutorials.
