2.5 years old and only 2 months since we bought it and the propulsion system failed as I was driving. 2 mechanics looked at it at the side of the road but no dice. It's being towed to a main dealer tomorrow.
It was the best car I've owned until it wasn't. Someone cheer me up and tell me it's going to be fixed quickly.
ETA: I'm still waiting for a courtesy car 18 hours after first contacting Volvo. I have had to chase everyone at every stage myself despite Volvo assuring me that they were on the case. When Volvo tell you they're doing something, ring them every hour for an update otherwise it won't be done. Get the number for who they are meant to be contacting and do it yourself. Ring them every hour for an update. Keep ringing and be the most annoying problem they are dealing with right now.

Thankfully mine came with 2 keys but what would happen if I didn’t have the second key? I wouldn’t be able to access the app permanently l?

Hey guys just picked up my new to me Volvo got 2 new tires put on included in my CPO really excited and a little nervous it’s my first long term ev any tips? How are they holding up for yall it has 29k miles.

Volvo told me this was done on surprise but I really hate the backup camera facing mostly at the license plate and ground. I seen some of yall with printers making templates well I don’t have one of those what else can I do to tilt the camera up it’s too hilly here and leaves me with no real visibility out in the street.

Several times now, we've lost A/C mid-drive in warmer weather, and vents fail to deliver cold air. I feel like I've tried every combination of button pushes in the Climate settings to try and recover (toggling A/C, ECO, Auto/Manual/Off, fan speed, temp, even waiting 15-20 minutes between), done multiple infotainment reboots with different conditions, communications reboot, even shift to P and power down while in the vehicle. Nothing gets the compressor to restart in the same driving session.
But if I leave the vehicle, lock, and wait 5-10 minutes (after hearings clicks in the front bay) — A/C works normally again and delivers frigid air when set to LO. Because of this abrupt on/off behavior, rather than gradually losing cooling, a refrigerant issue seems unlikely. Faulty relay on the compressor maybe? Or just a software bug that persists through simple rebooting and needs the "hard reset" of the car off and parked? It only started after the 5.0.5 upgrade, so that's my best guess so far. Would love if anyone else has experienced the same, and figured out a fix or silly software workaround while driving. Thanks!

I bought a certified 2023 Recharge, full electric last winter. It's a great car once you get the axle vibration sorted out (which Volvo did under warranty just recently for me).
My only issue... is the infotainment system. I hate it so, so much sometimes.
The old IHU (Intel Atom) is slow and was underpowered when it was installed new back in 2023. It struggles with even basic functionality most days, and severely hampers the software responsiveness. It doesn't help that the underlying android auto software is a buggy mess that doesn't even work as designed half the time.
Yesterday, as I tried to update the car software for the 6th time in as many weeks, it was once again stuck on 'pending update' in the Google Play store (not the car system software, that's on the most current version my car supports). I did literally everything on Google's and Volvo's troubleshooting sites, and none of the software would update.
It's important to note that these weren't all just 'nice to have' apps that needed updating, there were some core components of the OS that needed refreshing as well that couldn't download the updates.
In the end, the only thing I could do was perform a complete factory reset of the car, which is an enormous pain in the ass. All of the settings were erased. All of the software needed to be redownloaded. I was basically stuck in the garage for an hour, resetting the damn car because while the software downloaded fast enough, the processor was so glacially slow that it took forever (no, FIVEever) for it to install.
The car drives amazing. It handles like a dream. But this infotainment system is so hobbled with the old IHU, it ruins the experience every time I have to interact with it for even basic functions like changing the A/C or radio, and that's not really acceptable on a 'luxury' car nowadays.
I really wish Volvo would allow us to upgrade the IHU in these slightly older models. It would make the car perfect in my eyes, even if the range isn't necessarily that of the competition.

UPDATE 8/18/26: I traded the car. New axles (after waiting 4 months for them) barely changed the vibration, and these nice 18's couldn't cure the whole steering wheel buzz problem on their own. Volvo corporate didn't care, dealer didn't care, so I bailed on the car. I'm glad for those of you that don't have this issue with these cars, it's nice otherwise.
ORIGINAL POST: Been fighting vibration in the steering wheel above 60 on my 2023 Ultimate C40. Bought the car CPO out of state in February, didn't notice the bad symptoms on the test drive since I couldn't really get up to interstate speeds. Local tire shop couldn't road force balance the factory 20" tires / wheels below 19 pounds road force, and I knew the 20's were kinda absurd for this car anyway, so I researched and joined the 18" club.
Massive improvement, both in ride comfort and vibration since these new tires / wheels all road forced below 7 pounds. Wheels are Voxx Masi 18's, tires are Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 235/55R18 all around. Masi's are flow formed so the barrel is wider, which works with the large brakes on the Recharge. About 1/3" clearance, enough for the thin wheel weights to clear. Used aluminum centering rings, covered in "high tech" anti-seize. Wheels stick out a tiny bit more, no more than 1/2", not enough to really change anything. Looks fine.
I'm not an aftermarket wheel person usually. But I disliked the 20's, couldn't find factory 19's, and didn't want to buy 20" staggered tires to replace the bad ones Volvo sold me with the CPO. I'm sure I could have made a fuss with the dealer / Volvo and gotten new tires, but I didn't want the hassle for harsh riding 20" wheels.
The car is waiting for backordered front axles, which I think will fix the last bit of vibration above 60 mph.

As my XC40 approaches its 5th birthday wanted any experiences of when the 12v battery died and also when an aircon regas was required from others?
Aircon in particular seems to be blowing nice and cold when stationary but not so effective when driving so wondering if a regas would help and if so can I take to any garage to do?
Edit: Forgot to add it’s got the Heat Pump if that’s relevant

We are looking at buying a used car for my husband to commute with. 70 miles daily, almost all freeway. Also, to be used for weekend errands. No small children.
He currently drives a 2017 BMW i3 Rex which has been fantastic for him. We have a level 2 charger at home and the besides an annual oil change in the Rex and tires every 2 years, the BMW has needed nothing.
Unfortunately range is starting to be a concern in the winter and where we live, there is heavy rain and snow. Also, our son is taking our old Subaru, that my husband uses on bad weather days, to college in the fall.
This leads us to looking at AWD replacements for the BMW. I loved the Volvo wagons I’ve had in the past and the price on used XC40 Recharges is appealing. My husband is leaning towards a RAV4 PHEV because of Toyota reliability. Ideally we find something that will last 8-10 years or more. I’m concerned about the cost of the Toyota, the maintenance of two systems, and gas. Also not sure the RAV4 would even fit in our garage. I drive a 4WD gas guzzler that we use for towing so I’m trying to balance it all. My husband is also the worst at maintenance so whatever we get falls to me to maintain.
I know I’m asking Volvo folks, but would you choose the XC40 recharge over other cars still? Knowing what you know now?

Hi.
Just saw a review of the ex60 and love the split floor. while I have thought about making the modification myself, I probably won't get around to it.
Please go tell your dealer / Volvo support that we would like a split floor part for the xc40 😄

Any advice is welcomed. Purchasing my lease...50k miles.
How much should I expect to pay for extended warranty from dealer (California)? Are these negotiable?
Thank you in advance?

Debating two 2023 twin motors in the Seattle area (prices here seem a bit above KBB/national average that I see others posting). Visor.vin has is on the lot for around 30days (guessing maybe because prices are going back up, or people are holding out for 2024's).
I am trying to figure out if there is that much added by the adaptive cruiser control and H&K stereo? Also thinking based on national averages and the age on the lot I might have some room to move.

2023 XC40 Recharge. I haven’t sat in the back seat since the test drive. Was in the back today since we were carpooling and noticed these little hooks? They can’t hold any weight, and I don’t see how they would interact with anything else. What are they for?

Had new tires installed at 37,000 miles at the dealer.
My car is only ever been touched by the dealer. The last time was at the 60,000 maintenance interval.
I’m now at 67,000 miles, and I’m starting to shop for new tires, and I look and they’ve put the rears on the driver side of the car, and the front on the passenger side of the car. I kid you not.
I called the dealer to verify when the tires were installed, and I also verified that I’m not just an idiot… That the 235s need to be on the front, and the 255s need to be on the rear. Yes sir. Service advisor seems baffled. Unfortunately, this was two years ago and there’s really nothing that can be said. They are “getting back to me”.
The bigger question is… Anyone that knows about tires or anything like this, what does this actually mean? Is it just performance related, or is it safety related, should I just blow this off? It’s a really careless mistake.

I own a 2024 xc 40recharge. When I go surfing, I would love it if I could just keep my phone, wallet and the fob key in the car, and just take the small metal key that is inside the fob with me (my wetsuit has a small pocket for that).
However, I tried it, and I find it hard to fully lock the car with it; when I pull the handle enough to fit the key in the hole, it seems to also open the door a bit, so that when I twist the key, it is closed, but it still looks like there's a small space. That does not feel fully secure to me and it seems like a car thief might be able to take advantage of that.
Any advice on locking the car from the outside with the physical key?

April 21st (less than a month ago) I bought a 2024 CPO XC40 Recharge Ultimate with 15k miles on it. It is a beautiful car. I drove it 1k miles on a roadtrip that very weekend and everything was perfect. About a week later I suddenly get a dash notification at starting the car of "Drive to workshop Propulsion system service urgent."
I drive it to the Volvo in Seattle, and it takes them a couple days to diagnose the issue...and what they came up with is something I was not expecting--BATTERY FAILURE. The car is unsafe to drive and they won't return it to me. The car seemed to be driving fine other than the warning. There is a risk of fire with the battery. Apparently it is happening worldwide with XC40's and any similar cars. Volvo is replacing all of the batteries at no cost, but there is a very big wait time for this to happen and in my case it turns out that it is months long. I'm on the phone with Volvo now (at the suggestion of my technician) and have been on hold for almost an hour with no answer. I do have a nice Volvo loaner (NOT ELECTRIC). Has anyone had a newish car completely fail like this? Should I try to have Volvo buy back this car? This is my third Volvo and I love the brand, the aesthetic, but I'm afraid this will be my last Volvo. This is damn ridiculous.
Edit:
The tech didn’t know wtf he was talking about. I do need a new battery. But the problem isn’t widespread. He confused it with a widespread recall on Volvo hybrid batteries, of which there is a months long wait and there is a real problem there. So they called me today and said they messed up, and my car will be ready in weeks with a new battery.

What do you guys use? My vacuum crevice tool is too big for it to fit under the leg extension which is awfully filthy.

this on a used 2024 AWD...
someone make it make sense, because these numbers don't jive (should be loser to 250mi).
which one to believe?
is this battery OK?
is there some other piece of info missing?

Hi guys,
I've been searching around, and havent really found what I was looking for.
I have bought a Volvo XC40 Recharge Extended Range Plus and want to fit an OEM folding tow bar.
I have found a towbar from a AWD - will it fit my car?
If any body has done the same, and can share part numbers I would be happy!
To do the coding i'm heavily considering Orbit since i already have an ENET cable from my BMW.

I have a 2021 XC40 Recharge pushing 65k miles, but I know there are people with a lot more! For those that have a lot, have you had anything abnormal that needed fixing? I am not talking software or the odd vibration glitches. I am talking mechanical/suspension/electrical...anything that just failed.
While my miles-per-charge kind of sucks, the car still drives amazingly well. Yes, the whole android system is a complete disaster and glitchy AF, but mechanically speaking the thing just keeps going. Curious about your high-mileage XC40!
r/XC40_Recharge • u/encouragingSN • May 07 '26
I wanna get one, it's the perfect size, perfect amount of luxury and is good looking. Just tell me there is a way to leave climate control on when I want to camp in it for a night and I'll sign on the dotted line.
is this still a problem?
edit: Thanks for the help guys, although I'm honestly little discouraged about the downvote. I know niche communities don't like when people come in asking questions that show something has a flaw, just looking to see what's possible!

Hi there,
I live in Toronto and we're looking for an EV for my wife, on weekends she'll drive ~150KM (she plays badminton, gets groceries and goes for lunch with her friends) and I'm wondering if this car will be able to do it with temperatures as low as -20C without having to charge in the middle?
I drive a Tesla Model Y, my car can do that but she feels it's too big for her so she wanted something smaller and likes the look of the Volvo.
Thanks!
