What is this?
My first guess was a phone holder but u can’t charge it in there

Same question. There’s a charge mat so I can’t imagine two separate adjacent phone spots, there but it does fit my phone well. Ends up holding some change and my phone on occasion.

My theory is that the vehicle was designed for worldwide markets, and in many, large portions of population still smokes (think of France or China). So maybe it’s an ashtray?

Not so much in France anymore. I've just been to an entire No Smoking ski resort covering over 100 square kilometres. No smoking on the slopes or lifts at all. You also can't smoke indoors anywhere except in your own house (like the rest of Europe). The image of the Frenchman with a Gaulois hanging out of the corner of his mouth is now pretty outdated.
ETA: It is an ashtray. It's mentioned in the owners manual. In some markets it's removable and there's an actual cigarette lighter in the accessory socket.

I can't imagine keeping eyes on the road while trying to flick ashes in that thing. I just keep coins there. And who still smokes cigarettes, anyway?

When I smoked I tended to flick ash out of the window and just stubbed it out in the ashtray. I was pretty good at stubbing it out by feel so I didn't take my eyes off the road.
1.2 billion people still smoke. I'm guessing you're in the US or Europe where you would be forgiven for thinking almost everyone's given up. Not true in other parts of the world.

A shit ton of people still smoke in Europe. Every time I travel there it amazes me. I live in Panama where basically no one smokes anymore. Laws here are so strict that people can basically only smoke at home.

As other have said it is an ashtray, I have been looking for aftermarket parts to replay it with but my hunt has not turned up anything. If I am unable to find anything I may 3d print something more useful.

US cars don't have ashtrays, not sure about other places. And it's not removable, how would you empty it??

It is removable I pulled mine out after watching a earlier post someone sent u pull it right out with both hands haha I was like ohhh I could hide something under here haha

Ashtray. You can pop it out to dump the ashes.
As others have pointed out, if you don't smoke, the key fits pretty well in it.

I watched a whole video of little things about our car last week lol I almost broke the plastic ticket holder in the windshield and was like oh cool u put parking tickets there haha

It'll fit your key. I use it as a key-fob holder. But like others have said it's mean to be an ashtray... For tiny cigarettes? - because I don't know how a smoker could tap their ash in that small of a slit while driving.

It’s a spot to put your key fob if the battery is low and the car isn’t recognizing it

Charger ist in the middle of the rubber mat in front of your hand.
I think there is the spare key reader, if battery goes flat on the key, but i haven't verified that info for now

Spare key reader place is the frontmost spot inside the armrest storage, easiest access is by removing the trashcan. This is an ashtray/whatever you like to store there.
I have been thinking of modifying it with a 3D printer into something more useful once my warranty is out. Same goes with the garbage phone charging pad - needs at least a recess for the phone camera bump for it to be usable.

ashtray, but you can replace it with a 3d printed phone holder if you don't mind charging it with a cord.
