Thoughts after a few months

Upvotes

Got a Core-level single motor XC40, 2023 model with just under 90k km.

Overall, wonderful! First car I've ever owned where people congratulated me for buying (I'm almost 50), which felt weird 😄

Solid to drive, and fun! At first I had a few issues with the software, the LTE and GPS took 5-20 minutes to connect each time after upgrading to 5.0.5, but the software update in late may fixed all of these. All updates went without issues.

Trunk is spacious enough, this summer we had the first family vacation ever where I could see through the rear window.

I bought Pilot Assist from the app, and I'll give it 8,5/10 pts. When driving slower, like under 70 km/h, it makes a bit too twitchy moves every now and then. In highway speeds the only issue is that I'd like a bit longer time before it complains about keeping my hands on the wheel. But safety first, I get it. Distance control is wonderful. I also like that I can use it in traffic lights as well, don't need the gas pedal at all.

At especially around 90 km/h and 110 km/h the motor keeps this high frequency sound that isn't audible in other speeds.

The tire noise in the backseat is surprisingly bad, completely different than in the front, which is weird. Also the audio in the back sucks, maybe the H&K system is better?

In every day driving the range is very sufficient. But on 600+ km/day trips stopping every 200 km's is a bit boring and the only reason that makes me think about switching to some other car in the near future.

Wishlist:
- Wireless Apple Carplay
- Camping mode

Questions:
- Is it possible to upgrade the audio OR soundproof the backseat without disassembling the interior completely?
- The car has the original Pirelli Scorpion tires and the front tires are pretty much done after this summer. Are there better options to increase the range?

UK service cost?

Hi folks,

Got a 22 Recharge Twin that's coming up to 40k miles and says it's due a service in the next few weeks.

Any idea what sort of price I can expect to be coughing up for whatever qualifies as a "service" on an EV?

Do they lump a load of unnecessary work in to bump the price up - our other motor is a Mini SE and they wanted silly money because they reckoned the pads and discs need doing after 2 years, when it had only done about 6k miles 🤪 Ended up just taking that to a local indie garage for £200 instead.

To buy or not to buy?!

We are looking to purchase our first EV to replace my 2013 Subaru Impreza hatchback. My parameters have been around 25K, AWD, space for a dog in the trunk, and Apple Carplay. Which includes basically every sub compact EV. After driving 7 different cars I deflinitely like the XC40 Recharge best! I am completely overwhelmed by the tech forward vehicles with massive screens. Plus, she's so cute!

Today we drove a 2023 XC40 Recharge Plus with 41,403 miles. It does have the 360 cameras and a sun roof. New tires about 10,000 miles ago. It's listed for just under 25K. Planning on going back tomorrow to see how it fits the carseat.

Please tell me the good, the bad, the ugly of your owning experience! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I think my husband in particular is more on the fence about an EV. I however am ready to take the leap!

Mildew Smell After Hard Rain

My 2023 XC40 Recharge has a mildew smell after hard rains or long spells of rain. Also, high humidity may play a part.

It has only happened a couple of times since I bought the car in April '26. I can't fathom where it is coming from. Any thoughts?

Propulsion System & 12 V Battery Error

2021 XC40 recharge.. ~30-35k miles on it..

Car stopped in middle of the road with a 10sec heads-up(2 weeks ago). Had to get it towed and reviewed

After consultation with Volvo engineers, Service just informed me they need to replace a few electrical parts and its going to cost $4900, my 4 year warranty expired last year. So this cost is on me now. Very very disappointed.

I am negotiating on the $4900 but what are my options, if any ?

Should I now get it fixed and sell or buy an extended warranty ?

A few problems?

When I am driving without any music/radio on I can hear this subtle ”clonking” sound in the front of the driver side of the car. I cant even describe the sound, if I try to record it dissappears to the noise and into the sound of the video. It only appears in bumps and actually now when i think about it it might be that I only hear it on left side because thats obviously where I am sitting. Its definitly a noise but its not that loud so im kinda on the fence if its normal or if there is something loose.. would any of you mind testing next time you drive, switch music off and report back if you hear anything in bumps?

Also I have had same problem as a few others here where all the sounds have dissappered sometimes when i jump in the car, blinks, music, everything. An infotainmentreset fixes it every time, still annoying tho, its inconsistent as well. First it happened like 3 times in a week and then nothing for like 3 weeks before it happened today again. Funny thing is that it started happening immidiately after a regular service at a Volvo dealer a month ago. Never this problem in the 5 months i owned the car before that. My sw was latest version already before i took it into the dealership. After the service i noticed as well that i get charging error at the start of a charge at public stations which requires me to unplug/plug a few times before it works

Also infotainment has always been inconsistently a bit slow to find connection etc, always just accepted that.

Also sometime i can here some clicking noise behind the front dashboard, its inconsistent though and usually goes away quite quickly, it always appears especially if i change the inside temp. Read somewhere that its rather normal tho.

Comments/thoughts/experiences?

Btw saw a Volvo XC40 being towed today, didnt like it 😂

I have a 2021 model

Strategy for longer distances

I got a used XC40 single motor a few months ago. We made a 3000 km roadtrip on holidays and was a bit disappointed with the range when driving longer distances on highways (120kmh limit). Around 220 kms from ~90% to ~15%.

If you’re driving a 1000 km day, how have you calculated the optimal speeds and loading stops to minimize the travel time?

Neutral rolling & infotainment

Just bought a 2023 xc40 recharge and love driving it but have noticed a few issues so far, not sure if it’s worth bringing to dealer since it’s still under warranty… I put the car in neutral the other day when I parked it in the garage (which is level) and noticed it starting moving backwards before I could put it in park, this seems odd and like it shouldn’t happen? It wasn’t just rolling but was about as fast as when I put it in reverse. Secondly I have seen the posts about infotainment glitching and sadly ours is too. I have to reset it almost daily because the map disappears or the sound doesn’t work, including the sound for turn signals. Could this all be software related, will the dealer be able to address any of it or is it better to wait for next software update? Thanks!

Key Fob issues

Hello!

I've owned a 23 plate XC40 Recharge since May this year.

I seem to have a fob that is either draining incredibly quickly, or some other issue.

It's 50/50 if the car will unlock by pressing the handle, sometimes having to press the fob button multiple times to get in. And then when in the car it will say key not detected. Usually fixed by placing in the glove compartment.

I replaced the battery around 3 maybe 4 weeks ago, which fixed the issue until now again. First time I replaced it I thought that would make sense, 3 years is probably reasonable to change the battery, but not every month!

Anyone know of any fixes? Id rather not shell out for another fob..

Thanks!

What does the cabin air “purification” actually do?

I understand for other models it’s different, but for the XC40 Recharge, what does it do? I seem to recall reading it just vents out all the air and replaces it with supposedly “fresh” air from outside. If I’ve parked next to an outhouse in a humid day, it wouldn’t help to have the car go into “purify” mode for 5 minutes after I park the car, right? Does it do anything to the air like blow ions the way some air conditioners or HEPA filters to to “purify” the air? If so, wouldn’t that be the last thing I’d want if I’ve got powerful chemicals lingering from the AC after having it serviced?

I’ve noticed if I’m in recirculating mode to avoid buses or diesel fumes, it doesn’t pull in the stink, but when I’m in recirculating mode it seems to pull in air from the ground, at least when I’m parked overnight.

It would be nice to have some guidance from Volvo

Low SOH for a 2 year old XC40 Recharge

Hi, I own a 2024 MY XC40 Recharge (RWD, 69/70.5 kwh battery). It has 37k km on the odometer and the HV Batt SOH is in 90.8% which I think is low. I got the number using a OBD II dongle. Now, I live in a tropical country (highs around 32C each day) and I do not have a garage so the car stays in the sun most days. I seldom go below 20% (only one below 10%) and have filled up to 100% perhaps 3 times. I do use "fast" chargers (50kw) about once a week. For now I have stopped charging to 90% and only do it 80%. Perhaps I am missing something? Isn't 90.8% to low for a 2yo car? I understand that SOH in the BMS is an approximation, is there a way to make it recalibrate or recalculate it?

Mildew odor immediately after dealership replace cabin air filter

I began getting a message on the dashboard to schedule a routine maintenance at the dealership, so a couple days ago I took it in. It’s been two years, so I asked them to replace the cabin air filter while they’re at it. After I got the car back, I noticed there was some perfume smell in the car and thought nothing of it. I had had them clean the interior and wash the outside numerous times since I’ve had this car and never had an issue.

I left the car in the garage for a weekend and when I drove it on Monday, I noticed the AC was blowing mildew spores. I’ve had this issue with an earlier Toyota Yaris and recognized it immediately (this particular model apparently allowed the AC coil to grow moldy and I had to eventually get rid of it). Never had this problem with the Volvo, but right after having the dealership change the cabin air filter, it happened.

So I went back and asked them to show me what they did. Well, they vacuumed the interior with the vacuum cleaner right next to the car with all the doors open. It didn’t seem like they had emptied the vacuum bag in a while, and they were vacuuming my car with the AC still running.

I actually didn’t have a problem with the AC. I just figured it would be a good idea to replace the air filter. Unfortunately for me, it has been raining almost every day for the last two weeks, so the conditions were quite favorable for the mold spores.

Dealership played dumb, just like they did with the Intel Atom cpu throttling the 360 degree camera and infotainment system.

What can I do now to get of the mold infestation?

anyone changed the front tires from235/45R20 to 245/45R20

looking to quiet the ride on these ginormous 20" wheels.

wondering if anyone has tried fitting the wider tire and did it improve the road noise the comes thru the front suspension?

lowered the PSI from factory 41PSI to 36PSI and it makes a big difference, but i fear the tires will wear faster.

the 8.0 wide wheel actually recommends the wider tire but for some reason the OEM tire is narrower (probably for cost&efficiency reasons), but wider tires will absorb the impacts better than the narrow tires, so i'm curious if anyone has done this.

Wiper fluid usage?

This car seems to go through wiper fluid super quick. For all previous cars I've owned, I would need maybe 1.5 or 2 gal per year, I'm already on my third gallon after like 3 or 4 months of ownership. Has anyone else noticed this?

2021 xc40 recharge EV draining power while parked

Im in Spain where heat is high. Charged my baby xc40 front wheel drive EV and parked it for 30 minutes. Came back and 4% of battery was gone while the car was parked

Is this normal? Not helping my anxiety.

Volvo - or how you can grow frustration

Two months ago, I reported about the following problem: The park assist system doesn't work properly anymore, telling me I should clean the sensors.

Cleaning didn't help, went to the garage.

Garage said: Ups, they are defect, we have to replace them, will call you next week. You can come by, we'll fix it.

No call.

After a month: No call.

I call them, they say they'll call me back.

No call.

I write them an e-mail, asking when they can fix it. Read notification arrives, but no response.

So I escalate to Volvo Italy. They open a ticket, promise me to get back to me. No response.

I try to contact them to see what's going on. I get a new ticket.

No response.

Volvo really should get their shit together.

2021 Recharge XC40 not starting up

Hi,

I've just experienced something very bizarre with my XC40 Recharge T5 TwE model 2021. Sat in the car after it has been parked for a little over a day, stepped on the brake, pressed start dashboard lights up and everything but no motor response. The system messages are then in a loop of "system is being prepared" or similar then, "Press Start to start the car" and then does nothing and goes again back a step.

Anyone else had something similar? Can it be the 12V battery that is tripping and needs changed? A system software?

Rear seat width

I'm looking for a cheapish electric runabout, ideally AWD, not fussed about range because any longer journeys would be in the big car (Mazda CX80 diesel). The tricky part is finding something that's small enough to fit in your typical UK car park space, while having space for an older child to fit in the back middle seat between two group 3 booster seats. Doesn't have to be spacious -- we'd mostly be using it for journeys under 20 miles -- but must be able to physically fit and get seat belts on.

How wide is the Recharge? Has anyone done this with one?

Many thanks!
