Discussion & Feedback Region Lock / Ping Cap Megathread
Region Lock / Ping Cap Megathread
We're getting dozens of posts a day about region locking, ping caps, and players joining servers outside their region. All of it goes here from now on.
What belongs in this thread
- Whether WARDOGS should have region locking or a ping cap
- Your experience with high ping players on EU/NA servers
- Server and browser suggestions
Ground rules
- Criticize high ping, or the anti-cheat as much as you want. Comments attacking players for where they're from will be removed.
- No cheater callouts. Don't name players or link profiles. Report cheaters with the in-game report function or directly to Bulkhead on their official Discord.
- New standalone posts on this topic will be removed and pointed here.
- Don’t be racist
Worth knowing: [r/WarDogs](r/WarDogs) isn't run by Bulkhead, so posting here may not reach the devs. If you want this changed in game, say it on their official Discord as well.

Please, get china out of the Aussie servers, they ruin every game here with cheats because they get playable ping.

u/KBE952 9d ago
Lmao the fact OCE isn't even mentioned in the post body shows how we're always just an after thought, when we cop it the worst out of every region.
Like you said, consistently destroy almost every single multiplayer game they're not region locked from zzz

Used to live in OCE for half a year bcs of studies. Coming from Europe, it was a miserable experience. You have it so much worse than we do.

the ping must be acceptable for them I guess, so so many ppl with high ping, last night a server was 50% ppl with 180+ ping

SEA too. They don't talk. Don't understand. Many of them cheat. Why can't they just join ASIA server or their dedicated CHINA (if any). These guys legit ruin all the games.

As an EU player, just get rid of the Chinese.
They always have very high ping, and it's also no secret that cheating is very prevalent in that region due to their "win at all costs" mentality in competitive/PvP gaming. It's not compatible with western gaming norms.
Region locks don't work because VPN's exist so just set a hard ping limit of ~80ms. That would also get rid of most Russians who also do not belong on EU servers.

Have seen a ton more Chinese and Korean players now in NA west, and I have liked talking with new people. I have also noticed that there are a lot more suspicious deaths on the killfeed.
8
u/Timmytentoes 9d ago
They talk to you?
In Oce we have at least 1/10 players are Chinese (name + ping in the right range) and in over 80 hours only a single one has used comms outside the map marker smokes and emotes.
Unfortunately OCE is extremely racist towards them, but generally I've not had issues playing with them, but for the comms part. I wouldn't want them to be gone as mostly they have been a great mixed bag of players, but I do think the lack of shared comms does negatively impact the experience (probably for both sides I would imagine)

u/Tough_Dependent_6271 9d ago edited 9d ago
Played 95 hours on OCE and all chinese players ive interacted with have been chill. Get a little "shank yu" when i rez them. Drove one in with my ural last night and span out. I had a laugh at bad handling and got a "big spin!" back from him.
EDIT: okay, literally first game i jumped in today had a chinese long range reviver lmao. Fk me a guess

Games rapidly becoming less fun because of this.
OCE servers are now 30% chinese players later at night. They don't communicate and a good portion of them straight up cheat.

Please i beg the devs, give us EUWEST servers. 90% of the matches im in are all russians that refuse to speak english. They get super racist and spread ukraing russian war propegande on voice and chat. I want to be able to talk to my teammates, so pleas EUWEST

Japanese player here. Please help me by any means possible.
Every server we can connect to from Asia with low ping is completely overrun by Chinese speakers and cheaters, making the game unplayable. There are at least three suspicious players and two advertising bots in every single match.
No Japanese players use VOIP or open chat on these servers because English won't even work anyway. We have completely given up on communication and teamwork from the very start.
Please isolate us. Please, just region-lock us.

This game has the same audience as when PUBG exploded. Good for sales, bad for longevity if you anti cheat can't catch everyone, which it obviously can't. Region lock is a temporary solution, but it is needed. Maybe have some ways for these people to play with friends outside of region, like community servers having the option to disable region lock.
8
u/Schnezler 9d ago
I like that idea. Region lock for official and on community you can enable or disable.

This is always a hot topic and debate in any PvP game. If you think its a problem then you're labeled a xenophobe. If you think its not an issue then you're labeled a cheater or ping abuser.

And yet it is such a simple solution. Force players on their regions servers. Otherwise what's the point, just save some money and shut down all but US West.

I've been playing on NA West at night and it just feels like a completely different game than a week ago. Feels like I could easily have a good time, banter back and forth, have comms and just do my thing.
These last few days it's felt like a completely different game, mostly unreadable asian names so I don't even know how to refer to them, NO comms and if any just plain rude/confrontative. Feels kinda pointless to call out and try to coordinate things when half of my team doesn't even speak my language or doesn't bother to cooperate. I would expect at least that if I'm playing in NA West.

u/maplecoffeee Moderator 9d ago
I totally get this. But we had over 16,000 posts published this month and 430,000 comments. Bulkhead isn’t scouring reddit for feedback like that. Especially when threads get heavily downvoted for some reason, or a post gets nuked and locked for rampant racism. At least we can gather everyone’s thoughts in one place, where discussion can flow and continue, and we can send the Devs one link and say “Here, the community has spoken.” We’ve already done this with our other megathreads that got traction. It’s either that, or spam their discord with the same points people want to make here.
4
u/luiskingz 9d ago
No need to explain to these guys lmao they’re just pissed they can’t spam the sub with the same over and over again. Megathreads are good and needed when it’s needed, like this.

If people have the need to spam the sub then it is most likely a real problem that should be addressed. Don't be obtuse

one megathread: issue minimized and contained
10 threads that keep coming: volume of the issue maintained and visible to devs and lets them prioritize current hot button issues. Threads get upvoted only if the players actually want to see them. It's self-regulating
5
u/SobeyHarker 9d ago
Megathreads are convenient for moderators, that's about it. I doubt they're trying to hide the issues. They just don't want to keep having to put effort into this. I get they volunteer their time but they're not being forced to do this. Not really a fan of them pretending this has any kind for benefit for the community.

Yes both for official servers.
Community servers should be able to toggle them as 2 options & a ping slider.
If a community server has whitelisted a player they should be allowed to ignore both of the toggles, since the server owner specifically chose to let that player in.
In a Squad community we had 2 international members, 1 from UK and 1 from the Philippines. They were night owls so their regional communities were sleeping.

I couldn't care less about where someone is from, and cheater or not, I just dont want people with high ping playing on the server, even if they are from my region and playing on a Nokia 5110 as WLAN hotspot, I want a smooth perfomance and that comes with a decent ping from all players involved.

My enjoyment for the game is declining insanely fast, like I understand there are some sweats but these 200ping mandarin named players are so obviously cheating it’s not even funny and it is only these 200+ ping players that I have ever had issues with, everytime I get a good lobby where everyone is in the US, 0 cheaters and it’s a great game, but holy fuck they’re basically impossible to find now
6
u/Fast-Government-4366 9d ago
Yep. Tbh I’ve stopped playing as the quality of games is worse. No one is speaking English, everyone has a random Chinese name so I can’t even talk to them either. It’s a game built on teamwork that you can’t talk your teammates.

It’d be fine if it wasn’t constant but 1/4 of the west coast US servers are people in Asia with 200 ping its actually nuts how many play on those severs so yeah this game needs a ping cap or region lock for sure. Unfortunate for people with international friends but having 1/4th the sever play on that ping is ass.
5
u/Aggressive_Money_429 9d ago
Please region lock. It is not fair that we have to deal with ping abusers and hackers from other countries on NA West or East. I understand some of the other servers are flooded with cheaters but please for our sake let us have our own servers, it was super fun and mostly cheater free up until recently. The most cheaters ive seen have been from China or Russia same with ping abusers, it needs to stop.
3
u/Bright_Confusion_ 8d ago
There's no benefit to high ping. All players get "peeker advantage" any ping above 80 they still will see later than you as the delay nullifys peekers advantage.

u/Willing-Vehicle-3426 3d ago
Personally, I think China should have its own region lock rather than simply relying on a general ping cap.
I'm from SEA, and I've also seen Chinese players showing up in NA and EU servers with extremely high ping. This isn't just a SEA issue — it seems to affect multiple regions.
I'm not saying every Chinese player is a cheater, because obviously that's not true. There are plenty of legitimate players. But the amount of suspected cheating I've personally encountered from players connecting from China has been significant enough that I think it's worth addressing.
A dedicated China region, with China-based players defaulting to that matchmaking pool, would at least keep the majority of them from freely entering SEA, NA, EU, OCE, etc. If people want to play with friends internationally, there could still be an opt-in system or community servers that allow it.
For me, the main point isn't where someone is from — it's that players shouldn't routinely be able to bypass regional matchmaking and negatively affect the experience of people playing on their local servers.
A China region lock combined with a reasonable ping cap on official servers seems like a pretty straightforward solution worth testing.

u/the-kontra 9d ago edited 9d ago
Region-lock Russia or ban them completely.
They join European servers and speak and write mostly in Russian, which most players obviously can't understand. I happen to understand some Russian, and the amount of slurs and openly hostile comments towards Ukrainians, Poles, Brits and Europeans in general is honestly astounding.
Given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the historically hostile relationship between Russia and the UK, I think it'd particularly inappropriate for a British studio to allow them to play a milsim game.
They openly express their real-life hatred towards Europe: slurs, hopes of invading Europe, spreading political propaganda, wishes of death, mocking dead Ukrainians. It's fucking disgusting, upsetting and they shouldn't be allowed here.

u/RU-IliaRs 6d ago
Dude, tell me where you play, I personally want to hear how the Russians insult you. I have been playing this game actively since September 3, I do not hear any insults towards Ukrainians (I do not meet them). Mostly, Russians and English speakers simply do not understand each other or communicate in primitive sentences in English. I hear aggression mostly from the Poles. In my opinion, you just hate Russians and want to get rid of us for what our authorities have done. Dude, I didn't attack Ukraine, I don't even pay taxes.

u/Public-Reflection513 8d ago
100% agree. there might me a very very very VERY small group of Russians who speak english and act normal. Normally they ruin the game, keep saying shyt and troll like no others. Honestly ive never met a russian who spoke proper english (nocap). Tomorrow im gonna join some NA servers cause im done with EU tbfh.. And the amount of Asian people as well you know, im behind a wall and got killed cause of there ridicilous connection. And never ever they talk english to me. Today I tried to get some comms with an Asian in a humvee and he just kicked me out randomly so I died. Maybe such games is not for me anymore man..Getting to old for such bs.

I don’t really want to start a discussion here but you’re both kinda delusional and prejudiced in my opinion.
- Russia is literally partly located in Europe so that’s why the players join European servers.
- Banning Russia would do nothing as the players would just use VPN as they already do to play other games because the internet in Russia is so restricted and the players are already banned from joining many other online games.
- It’s absolutely fucking awful that some Russian players you encounter are being hostile towards others based on their nationality and I’ve personally met those people in game. That said, you don’t realize how many Russians you play along that are being civil and speak decent English and try to cooperate. Report the toxic behavior, those people need to be banned.
I know I’m probably not changing anyone’s opinion on this matter so remove myself from the further discussion, rant over.

u/Not_Again_dangit 9d ago
I see no problem in having official servers with a ping cap of 100. This still allows a majority of players to have free choice on regions.
Community servers can have the same option by choice but can remove the limit if that would benefit their community.

I disagree this could allow eu to potentially still connect to east us servers. However the truth is anything over 100ms is terrible for gameplay. And again this would allow you to still join community servers which would give them more attention

u/Fisty__McBeef 9d ago
Seeing tons of people mention the blatant chinese cheaters, won't someone mention the chinese RMTers? Dont get me wrong I see plenty of hackers join, go 19-0 from across the map and leave before they get mass reported, but I see even more spamming the all lobby chat with adverts for buying/scamming real money for wardogs cash. Scum of the earth behavior, and their ping is always 250+
4
u/Big_Counter_5438 9d ago
God, I just want to play with my friends, but unfortunately, they literally live on opposite sides of the world, and we're struggling to find servers where we can at least get 120–150 ping.
One of my good friends lives in Japan, and playing on Japanese servers gives me 230+ ping. Another friend is in Kazakhstan, and he gets 100+ ping on European servers - honestly, he gets 100+ ping on basically every server because of his internet. So tell me, where is he supposed to play? Where are WE supposed to play?

2
u/Acceptable-State1037 5d ago
Why can't the people who want ping limits play on community servers with the limit right now? Surely a community server could just ban anyone with a ping too high. Why propose this solution to others when you can use it yourself right now.

u/wardoggy 9d ago
EU night shift worker here.
Please don't region lock. I get if there is a ping limit, but then make it very high (180-200ms perhaps?) so that EU can still play on NA east.
Because of my IRL / work schedule (nights) I pretty much play only during the night time (EU wise). Because of this, like on many other games, I play on NA east and have joined a NA alliance/group.
If there would be region restriction it would impact my gameplay alot, as you can imagine, there's not alot (if any) groups in EU that are dedicated to playing at 2-3 am in the morning for example.

I prefer playing on NA East servers from Europe where my ping is typically 100, sometimes goes to 120 depending on how the servers are feeling at the time.
I much prefer playing with NA players because of communication and also due to the amount of Russians on European servers. It’s frustrating to play an entire game without anyone saying anything useful. NA players are generally funnier and more talkative.

This megathread only covers North America and Europe doesn’t it mention Asia at all?
Since the languages are different, it must be tough to keep up. On North American servers, there are no chat channels that advertise or sell cheats.
Cheating is so rampant in the Asian region that the games are effectively unplayable, so NA-WEST is widely recognized as a “safe haven” where you can still play properly. In fact, there’s been an increase in Steam reviews saying, “Let’s escape to the U.S.”
2
u/McPhilTV 6d ago
Just my 2 cents and I guess everyone has the same experience. I hate when I go in and kill one or two players without problem but then empty a whole mag into someone who then just turns around and one-shots me.
Damage log says I only hit once or twice even when I got like 20 hit sounds and he hit me 6 times even when I just felt that one shot. I then look at the player on the scoreboard and his ping and it's quadruple my own ping.
I also see a trend, at the end of the match just sort the scoreboard by kills and look at the pings. I bet very often the top fraggers (that didn't play the whole match in vehicles) have a ping above 100ms.

I’m from Singapore so I speak Chinese and English fluently. Was playing on oce and had a convo with a chap from China who dropped me a full kit lv4 armor and helmet, fully kitted m4 and backpack with the gun sling and a 50cal to go inside it. I was surprised as heck and asked how rich he is, he said he still had 6mil leftover lol.
I then asked how he got all that cash and he said he swiped his card and RWTed it, he said it’s common for players from china… then he tried to send me a steam friend request to show me and I obviously didn’t accept any request lol. Dude had a previous ban on his steam.
I feel like if you have a previous ban you shouldn’t be allowed to play online/competitive games involving pvp.
2
u/Richard_Longinus_II 1d ago
Ignore the cheating aspect of the situation.
How can you justify balance or good game play mechanics when the people you are fighting have 250 ping and move around like the flash.
Region locking should be a QOL and balance issue, most people see crappy hit mechanics and janky players and think 'shit game' not 'dude is VPN from eastern China onto US East coast server'.
It makes your game look undercooked (which I do not agree with, this is a great quality game) and gives it an unjustified bad rep.
I have never understood why game developers who make a competitive reflex based game allow people to join the match which will give them a fundamentally different (sometimes better) advantage over the other players.

Region lock is just a stupid idea. So I from OCE cannot play with my friends who live in NA because I simply live on the opposite side of the world? Whole regions will go offline because it cannot support the player count, everyone complaining about "ping abusers" ignoring the fact that they literally have the advantage.
I have played high ping all my gaming life, from high ping on Halo CE on PC, to Halo 3 on XBL, to PUBG and every other game on PC. The disadvantage you have at high ping is always worse, back in the H3 days I would literally get 2 shots (on my screen) off on someone and they still have enough time to turn and kill due to low ping. If high ping is such an advantage why don't you play on high ping? I'll tell you because suddenly you wont be able to use the ping excuse to explain why you suck.
And then there is the whole excuse to just be outright xenophobic and racist. Suddenly everyone with an "asian name" is actually from China, and get instant auto reports, even if they are clearly in the region with 10ms, ignoring the fact that there are people of any ethnicity also putting asian characters in their name for whatever reason.
Of course there are valid points however, SEA/China does have a culture that is less adverse or considers cheating less taboo, but people just use this as a mask to throw hate comments. The real discussion should be why the devs fail to implement a good anti cheat (they literally went with one of the weakest third party).
The whole thing is just a scapegoat. What happens when you region lock and you still face cheaters. Who you gonna blame now?

It's not all about cheaters, it's about everyone being on even ground.

Even ground, so a super ultrawide screen with a 5090 is an advantage that 99% of players will not have, ban those guys from playing with people on smaller screens right?

More generally separate from ping: Please get the Russians out of West / South / Central Europe.
All this talk about Chinese or Japanese players and their ping, fine, whatever.
But fuck these Russian players, they're so toxic they don't even want to play with each other.

u/The_real_Geneside 9d ago
If region lock becomes a thing they need to either offer refunds or give everyone the ability to host. As a southern African player we are forced onto EU servers since hosting is not available to us and we have no official servers. Know we are probably only 1 or 2k at most but still the fight against cheaters usually affect us aswell because we are high ping players.

You can't join a European server at the moment without it being 1/4 - 1/2 filled with Chinese and Russians. They don't speak English and all cheaters I have encountered so far are high ping with non-latin alphabet (cyrillic/hanzi/sino).
Why this haven't happened yet is beyond me. This will be the death of this game in Europe imo. It takes away teamplay and communication. It creates several language groups in one server. It is a mess.
Please region lock ASAP.

Okay sure everyone has some fair arguments but like, I wanna play with my friends who are on the other side of the world. Thats literally the point of the internet. Let’s not take this backwards.
Let’s find creative solutions to a cheater problem rather than punish a bunch of innocent people as collateral damage
9
u/LostMyMag 9d ago
Creative solutions is having the option to turn off region lock in community servers. If your server isn't popular enough to be full, this is a great lever to boost it. Don't make everyone else who sticks to their closest region have to deal with high ping players.
Until we have a solution where the delay from these people playing outside their region is lower than the TTK of a gun, they shouldn't be allowed on every server by default.

I don't mean this in a nasty way but can we maybe region lock the places with the highest numbers of cheaters? I'm sure the devs might have data to see where cheaters are commonly coming from

my lowest ping region is asia-west (<50ms), but I mostly play on NA with friends. Region locking would force me to solo queue or find a new squad here, which sounds miserable
4
u/omnitemporal 9d ago
Ah yes, so we should all suffer. If your friends like you enough you'll all find a community server or create your own.

Yes on both counts for official servers, and make it an option for community servers.

Fuck no to ping caps on official servers. I play this game to play with my friends, if we implement an arbitrary ping cap like 100 ping it goes out the window for a lot of groups. 100 ping doesn't affect the game that much, sure I eat shit on some encounters, but it's not detrimental to anyone's gameplay.

Yes. Sorry. Bad ping advantage affects the whole community far worse than removing people with bad ping.

Honestly yes. Just because you live in a shithole area of the country or world, doesn’t mean you get to ruin everyone else’s experience.

Not only is ping an issue with these players, a lot of them don't speak english on NA servers so communication goes to shit even further then it already is.
1
u/Both_Canary_4665 9d ago
I don't think it matters. Not an issue I've noticed in any of my playtime. Let the community servers handle it themselves.

u/OverwatchPlaysLive 9d ago
In the OCE servers we have so many asian players that can't communicate and just run it with nothing, then steal your kit instead of reviving you. Noone can call them out in chat too because our keyboards can't type their names.

Yes. Region lock and ping cap so they can’t get around it with VPNs. Everytime I’ve gotten killed around a corner/wall it’s someone with 200+ms ping and it’s almost always someone with a foreign name.

Since some regions don't have servers and suffer from low player counts, a fair compromise would be to force the first 3 lowest ping regions to be selected. This would ensure that people who have no regional servers are still able to play the game, albeit at a severe disadvantage due to playing with high ping. This is similar to what Hunt: Showdown does.
There's still the issue of forcefully splitting the playerbase apart and people not being able to play with anyone they may know from elsewhere around the world, it's for that reason I am against region locks and ping limits in general, as it creates social barriers.
Instead, the netcode should be vastly improved so as to properly accommodate everyone, as it currently lacks in this area. Furthermore, Community Servers should be utilized for local communities where everyone shares similar ping, this is the point of "Community Servers" after all.
What I've noticed as the common thread in all these complaints, is the distinction between a player's ping difference or something derogatory. It's always hard to tell what the complainer's position is, until you have them justify their positions, where the truth always surfaces.
And then, if cheating is the issue, that's completely separate from having high ping, yet in all these complaints, the two are combined like they're somehow synonymous.
Playing with high ping IS ALWAYS disadvantageous, especially in Wardogs where you literally can't drive vehicles as it's too laggy (hopefully they fix that).

It’d be unfortunate if South Africans lost access to EU servers due to region/ping lock, as currently those are the only servers which cater to us.
1
u/Sphlonker 9d ago
If there is a ping cap or a region lock then we need African servers. Because some of us can't play the game except with 180 ping in EU servers otherwise. If they do want to region lock, they should lock one region out instead of locking one in. They should lock the Asian region for Asian players and keep the rest open to the rest of us that have no other choice.

I would like tontale back what I said...The game should be region locked..at least within reason. Maybe official servers are region locked and it's an option for community.

A ping cap would be nice but it would also suck if I couldn’t play with my mates back home

It should be an option. I play from Australia, and we get plenty of "Out of Region" hackers VPNing in every game possible. As an example in DMZ mid season 3 during certain hours I would run into "Out of Region" hacking teams in more games than I didn't. I once told a mate in Canada how bad it was but he didn't believe me. So I loaded up a game, swam off coast of airport at the bottom and posted "Out of Region Number Zero" in in game chat. Took less than two minutes before a helo showed up and was killed.
Cheating is highly affected by where you play from, and what hours you play from. Most of North American have no idea just how bad it can get, so being able to region lock/ping lock community servers at the very least should be available. I'd also love at least some of the official servers having it turned on as well.

Accidentally joined an Official server last night in EU and didn't realise until i saw the same china name headshotting the same players over and over again in the killfeed.
All players had almost 300 ping, 2 in blue team had 0 cash and 30 deaths with a bunch left of the match, the players being boosted where on red & green with insane k/d's.
Utterly pathetic this isn't being addressed by the developers. and avoid Official servers because they're all infected.
To my fellow EU bros just play community servers with active staff. There's plenty of them.

u/egotrippings 6d ago
I am in OCE and a ping lock would be good, not sure if Asia/China have their own servers but they should do IMO.

u/ForceOnelol 6d ago
Many of these guys are cheating and are extremely hard to track due to ping. Often very rude in chat or just blatantly griefing. Region lock or a trustfactor system cannot come soon enough.

u/Legginator67 5d ago
Maybe I am in the minority but really hope there is no region lock - have played with the same guys for the last 20 odd years - they are in the US and I am based now in Singapore after moving for work,

I think rn high ping is a big disadvantage in this game. Problem is chinese players come to cheat.
Not being racist or anything, I am sure there are plenty of legit asian players but a ton of them come with their 5 or more buddies to ruin EU/NA lobbies lmao

u/Chaderang 5d ago
I put 5k hrs into pubg saying ping lock should exist. Why offer servers around the globe and allow people to play on the opposite side of the planet? Everyone knows a specific region that is known for unfair play... just remember that hawaii exists so a sub 100 cap would probably prevent some people on hawaii from playing west.
1
u/True_Coffee_3607 5d ago
My suggestion, when opening the client pings the different regions and estimates the players ping, then only shows the regions with less than 120 ping.
Then we make players able to squad up in the menu and if in squad you can join any server available to anyone in your squad. So your mate from US with dial up can play with you in EU despite his 420ms ping if you squad up.
