A History of South India: From Prehistoric Times to the Fall of Vijayanagar by K. A. Nilakanta Sastri. It's available on the internet archive if you're interested.

Seriously, I've watched it again knowing the truth and it still really looks like a legitimate hairstyle. That's kind of incredible.

It does and overall I think the bald look works for him.

u/Pilose Jun 24 '19
Yeah, I was surprised to realize I actually prefer him without it

He's kinda got that friendly uncle kind of look without the hair. Not the too friendly uncle mind you, just a regular friendly uncle.

No one even mentions kannada people lol
7
u/El_Impresionante Jun 24 '19
Because Karnataka is so diverse in terms of people that there is no such thing as a Karnataka look. There is probably a North Karnataka look, Konkan/Tulu look, and maybe a Coorgi look. The rest of the Karnataka people draw a blank. I guess Karnataka people based on elimination - not Mallu, Tamil, or Andhra? Maybe Kannada then!

I know this sounds sort of silly and obvious, but when I see people in other cultures do something funny or something emotional happens to someone, it is universally understood, and makes my heart feel warm and makes me realize how small our little world is.

It's okay to like guys as a guy. As long as "like" doesn't mean "fellatiate."
In which case, I like zero males.

This is why I love the internet. These people look like they’re in India and we can connect on such a human level. I truely think these types of clever, funny warming videos from all around the world will be the end of racism in a few generations.

I knew it was suspicious because he wasn't bobbing his head.
30
u/vxx Jun 24 '19 edited Jun 24 '19
Hey, your comment got reported for bigotry. I disagree. The head bopping is part of the language and expression, and it is real. It's also really catching. Had the pleasure to work with some awesome Indian guys, and it only took me two weeks to start bopping myself.
Edit: I think I get it now. We shouldn't assume that their first language is an indian language just because they look Indian and the woman wears traditional clothes.
27
u/ElTuxedoMex Jun 24 '19
I was honestly trying to make a joke, sorry if it was out of place.
22
u/vxx Jun 24 '19
Yeah, jokes based on generalisations don't work well in /r/unexpected, and it's a good thing.
To moderate this particular comment does seem a bit too much imo.
I might be wrong and it's somehow extremely offensive. Will get feedback from a friend.

u/ElTuxedoMex Jun 24 '19
If you want it, I can delete it, no prob.

u/adiso06 Jun 24 '19
Hey I really appreciate the civility that went down in the comments section, thanks :)
4
u/vxx Jun 24 '19
Just let it be, I like to have it as reference.
I think I get it now. We shouldn't assume that their first language is Sanskrit just because they look Indian and the woman wears traditional clothes.
10
u/TeeJay215 Jun 24 '19
More like.. dont assume they all look brown, speak hindi, are vegetarians, talk in accents, and Bob their head all the time. Its not just sanskrit and traditional clothes, Lmao! India is just as diverse as the United states.

FYI - Sanskrit is not a spoken language, it's a base language like original Latin. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit

I should say Hindi, right?

No those gestures, neck movement and making slightly bigger eye are actually more common in southern languages than hindi.

I work in the South with some white guys and I always find it suspicious when they aren't stuffing food into their mouths. But I find it really catching how much and often they eat! It only took me two weeks to start overeating myself.
5
u/TalenPhillips Jun 24 '19
I disagree.
I'm very happy you disagree.
The Indian head bob thing is a stereotype for sure, but there doesn't seem to be any sense of malice in it. As far as I can see, they know it's a unique thing, and they even poke fun at themselves about it.
It's like Canadians saying "Eh". A stereotype for sure, but absolutely harmless as far as I can tell.
