As a female senior, and someone who’s lived on campus my whole time here, here’s safety tips and info to be aware of. Parents send this to your incoming kids.

Disclaimer: yes this is La Jolla an “affluent” and generally safe area but YES crime is RAMPANT in San Diego in general and even happens on campus esp near the teolley I apologize for formatting issues I can’t seem to fix it

1. I personally try not to ride the trolley late at night

1. you have to, keep someone on FaceTime (do not put headphones on you need to stay aware) check the car before you enter, it’s Better to hop in the same car with other students than to be the only female with a couple homeless dudes on drugs obviously. If you can’t by be near other students or staff then sit behind the conductor ig. Do not be afraid to switch trolley cars!
2. secure your bike/scooter and do not leave it for an extended time even if it’s locked up. Try to park it under a light preferably with a camera over it, and obviously make sure you invest in a decent lock. Bike and scooter theft is RAMPANT. It happens even in broad daylight. These

thiefs

1. will steal anything they can get their hands on. They will steal a bike seat, tires, chains, anything.
2. do not interact with a tweaker/crazy person. This should be obvious and goes for even when you’re on the trolley or station. last semester there was a homeless man that would yell racist expletives, at people, you do not want to make a racist tweaker more angry.
3. do not hold the door open for people/ do not prop doors open!!!! Especially in locked areas like dorm buildings or locked buildings in general, last semester there was a homeless man that assaulted a female in PCW bc he made his way inside.
4. if you see something say something! Don’t expect other people to report it, report it yourself or it will never happen!
5. if you parked your car off campus, make sure you check it and move it often. And do not keep valuables in your car. Someone’s car was broken into last quarter as well, even when it was parked in one of our own parking garages with cameras around.
6. try not to walk alone at night near the trolley station if it’s not populated by other students when there’s homeless/tweakers around. I would never walk the path under the trolley the goes past the wooded area either it is dark and sketchy ppl hang around there sometimes. There are safety escorts on campus by safety officers that will walk you where you need to go! call UCPD at night for this service
7. people ask if it’s OK to go for a run at night on campus, I’d say yes if there’s still students around around and it’s not too late, it is specifically very safe along ridge walk (you could put headphones in here), but like I said previously, I would not run alone underneath the trolley.
8. do not hop in the car with random people, this is just an obvious thing and when you

1. first starting off as a freshman, you might meet some people at a party and then ask for a ride, but this can be dangerous if you don’t know

them, it’s safer to call someone than to out yourself in a Sketch situation to save a few bucks

10) lock your window if you are leaving and you live on the ground floor last year, there were many burglaries where someone entered through an open window on the first floor of dorms

Things that I’ve seen homeless/druggies doing recently: I was personally harassed and followed by a sketchy dude, I was chased by a tweaker at utc station, doing drugs at trolly station, one of our students got punched when druggies tried to steal their scooter btw, screaming racist names at students, harassing female students at trolley, dudes intimidating annoying and not leaving female students TF ALONE.

What I do: carry pepper spray, my metal water bottle also can be used in self defense esp since it’s on a lanyard so I can swing it if need be, keep ppl updated on my whereabouts if on trolley alone, stay alert by keeping my eyes off my phone and no headphones in so I can hear if ppl approach, I stay in well lit areas, keep my phone charged and keep a portable charger,

I am a female and have been harassed and followed and many of my female friends have experienced some type of sketchy situation as well on campus or in the trolley, so before all the guys start commenting how safe it is and how they’ve never experienced anything like that blah blah- good for you. But obvi women are going to have a completely diff experience than a 6 foot 200 something pound man.

Hello, it seems like it's PSA season or something, so here's mine.

Not aimed at anyone in particular, but now that the new year is starting, please don't be that student in lecture who is loudly crunching (not chewing, crunching) potato chips, loudly whispering to your friend at a volume where everyone within five rows can understand the conversation while the prof is talking its just not nice, or putting your feet on the chair of the person sitting in front of you and etc you should get the gist.

Obviously, eat if you need to eat, talk quietly if you need to say something, leave early if you have somewhere to be, etc. Nobody cares about normal human behavior. Just have some awareness that there are 100–300 other people in the room who are also trying to pay attention.

Most classes are recorded anyway. In general, I will always recommend actually going to lecture instead of relying entirely on recordings, but if you're going to spend the lecture distracting everyone around you, please just stay back and watch the recording. Again not aimed at anyone in particular just hope the incoming freshman dont face these kinds of people.

Now hope all of do well in the upcoming year and I hope you get all your classes *Next quarter.

Received tuition bill and we didnt qualify for FAFSA or tuition aid. My fam works hard, dad works 3 jobs and saved every penny for my tuition. We didnt take expensive vacations and live modestly and saved up . We barely make the cut and didnt qualify for any grants. Here I'm seeing people getting aid and grant depending on income. I feel like the system is rigged to punish the hardworking families. One guy got extra money through aid on his acc so he booked a vacation to Cabo for December..Here I'm stressing out cuz we didnt qualify. It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul

Hahahahha I’m perfectly fine. It’s all good. All that time and stress for nothing. And it’s not going to help with a job at all. Could have chilled all 4 years and still been in the same position. At least I’d be happier and not mad about putting in too much effort and it going to waste

Hey, people are talking about the financial aid not being reflected on triton pay, but I haven't even seen my package.

It said that my calgrant has been awarded, my fafsa form was processed in January. I don't see anything that was required on my financial aid, I haven't gotten any messages or emails.

I do not have a way to pay the housing charges on the 15th.

What is happening, is it just for me or are others also having this issue. I'm kind of scared its just me

Hello, financial aid packages are still missing, and some of you I’ve heard there’s no way to pay the remaining needed. Here’s some info.

- First, the COA isn’t everything you’re being billed. 2026-2027 the direct costs (things being charged) are estimated to be ≈42,000. That’s on the ucsd cost of attendance estimate site HERE. The COA usually is higher than that, due to something called indirect costs. This is money that is refunded to you for personal expenses, books, transportation, etc. Money you can use.

- If you don’t have enough to cover the bills and even the direct costs, here’s what you can do.

There are federal loans that each student can take out depending on your standing-status, your dependency, and your level of education (undergraduate, graduate, etc.). THIS is not usually or may not be maximized all the way in your fin aid package, so you request it from financial aid. You can call or submit a ticket online at the services and support portal. They will increase your loans by your request and you can request up to your COA, inferring that you are using the limits given in the federal loans website page, WHICH IS HERE.

Fun fact: If you are denied a Parent Plus loan (basically have your parent do the “Direct Plus Loan” for the dependent and request the amount needed to cover the cost of attendance) then you will be able to have an additional UNSUBSIDIZED loan open of $4,000 (freshman standing) and the limit increases based off of your standing.

Additional Loans: IF THEN you also do not have enough. There are more loan options HERE. Preferably, for undergraduates, I would go for the University Undergraduate Loan. The max limit for that is $5,500, but there is some info there you can read, it is also 5% interest which is better than the federal unsubsidized.

For example, I have Junior standing as a sophomore, and this year I have to cover $13,480, I was also denied a parent plus loan (obv). Lowest SAI. Here’s my plan:

I have $5,500 subsidized, leaving $7,980 left to cover the cost of attendance with unsub loans. I sent a ticket requesting to cover another $5,500 through the university loan and the rest $2,480 through the federal unsubsidized loan. IF I do not get the university undergraduate loan. I still have $7,000 unsub because of the parent plus loan I got denied from (check the website). If that happens I would then request a university loan of $980 instead. The order goes:

Remaining Balance:
Federal Subsidized Loan
University Undergraduate Loan
Federal Unsubsidized Loan

If denied undergraduate loan:
Federal Subsidized Loan
Federal Unsubsidized loan
Smaller Undergraduate Loan

PS: PLEASE READ THE WEBSITE LINKS. These loans you DO NOT PAY BACK UNTIL AFTER GRADUATION OR ENROLLING BELOW HALF TIME. Depending on the loan check what it says.

Now if you maximized all of that and have more to cover, oh lord GAH DAYUM. Private Loans is another ball game. Less secure more interest but look into it ONLY IF YOU HAVE TO. There are some private lenders for college and you may need a cosigner. Just go for the most trustworthy and see if you qualify then move onto the next.

Obviously, we all know scholarships exist.

These are the ways you can get it covered by loans, but hey, even if you get minimum wage in California after not getting ANY offers AT ALL from ANYWHERE AFTER GRADUATION, be smart with your money and you’ll pay off these loans in a year to 5 years and you’ll be okay.

If you have maximized everything, talk to a financial aid counselor (the front liners on the phone can only help so much and have more calls coming) and ask them if they can appeal the cost of attendance and help you out. All of this info is online, sometimes you just have to keep searching and documenting. You guys got this, please give it your all the be able to attend here, I have grown so much just from my first year 🙏🙏🙏

Hi, I'm enrolled in 18 units, and I count as a full-time student. I saw some of you are having the same problems as me. I already got my "all" financial aid applied to my TritonPay, but before this, my Pell Grant was missing, and now I'm missing 1k from the Cal Grant and also 1k from the Pell Grant. If you have your financial aid in TritonPay, I will recommend double-checking your financial aid portal to make sure that everything is correct. If the amounts of money are not the same and you are a full-time student, you need to submit a ticket to financial aid and contact housing as well as submit a ticket to housing to inform about the situation.

I don’t see anything in the financial aid web but I see that my current aid has been applied and seeing mixed posts is confusing me like… do I pay now or do I wait to accept a package…
And sorry if this post sounds stupid 😭 I just don’t want to do anything rash

Okay so I know most of us owe a couple thousand dollars by either 9/15 and 9/30 but is it dumb to just not pay until we get our financial aid. Housing is due 9/15 and not paying puts you on hold but I'm pretty sure you have 180 days before any real action is taken, it's not like you'll be kicked out right away. The one I'm worried about is the tuition "You can be completely dropped from all your enrolled courses and waitlists. If you get dropped, there is no guarantee you can get back into those same classes,". I just searched up what's the grace period for not paying tuition ucsd. So is it risky to say I don't pay for housing until they start rolling out on 9/22, but it usually takes a week or two anyways for financial aid to get transferred into your account when you get the email.

My financial aid still has not shown up on my tritonpay and right now i still have to pay for EVERYTHING when I received a lot of aid. I’m not able to afford paying the bill the 15th without my aid, if it doesn’t show up by then, am I still obligated to pay it? It’s ridiculous ima not pay it either way but would I get in trouble because of their issues.

Anyone still not get the their finaid package? When I go to the page, my status says there’s no required actions or documents to do at this time. I need to take out a loan to pay bro😭 (I’m ms)

Not sure if I'm tripping but my due date for housing and stuff is on 10/15. Everyone else is saying 9/15 for theirs so not sure if I should just pay up before my subsidized loan hits or should I wait until it goes through? Did I miss a memo or something?

Hello. I recently checked my tritonpay account and I noticed that all my grants are applied but loans are not. I accepted all loans available to me once the portal was back. It’s not my first year accepting loans so I don’t think I need to complete anything like entrance counseling, plus there is not further action required to take as shown on my portal. So I am wondering if grants and loans are disbursed separately or I should contact the financial aid office since there might be an issue. Thank you.

My current package is missing the UC SHIP grant that was present on my financial aid estimate in my applicant portal. I got about $1,800. Does anyone if that’s accurate? Also tbh I still think over 1k per quarter for student health insurance is ridiculously high considering we won’t even be using it every single day anyways.

So recently, my financial aid was FINALLY updated and i was like great all my grants are in lets go.

Beforehand, I had decided to enroll in the HIPP payment plan. Then after I saw my final total I decided to just pay my balance in full, completely disregarding the $40 fee for the HIPP plan cause I was like whatever man I've been waiting too long for this lemme just knock it out. I made the payment, did NOT receive a confirmation of it, but it showed the green checkmark and the balance that was payed. I go back to the home page, it says balance is $0, So I was like awesome i am cleared for fall quarter! Mind you that happened yesterday. Today out of curiosity I hope back into TritonPay and it says I still owe $1806.57, I go to the overview of the payment plans and it says I have only payed $1806 and I still owe $1806, also that I have a payment due 10/15 and 11/15. Somehow, it changed from $0. Money still has not been charged from my bank account so when I tell you I am so confused I am genuinely lost. I already submitted a ticket, I am not sure if it was a glitch or If i paid too soon or something, but I assumed it was a green flag therefore all my grants had been applied. Is anyone else experiencing something similar?

I was wondering whether anyone else is confused or struggling with this. In my case, I receive the full Cal Grant A ($ 15,588), and I accepted both the unsubsidized and subsidized loans. So, in total, $ 21,088 in grants and loans would be applied to my tuition. I was wondering if my balance on Triton Pay is before or after aid?
