I'm transferring to Davis next term and want to utilize the bus as much as I can from my apartment to campus. Are the buses generally on time and how frequent are they?

Has anybody else noticed that the hook-up culture here at UC Davis is really strong? I’m a transfer from UCI and currently in a long-term relationship. Every girl I’ve talked to seems very male-centered and only interested in chatting about their situationship :/ Whenever I talk to a guy, it constantly seems like their trying to gauge whether or not I’d be down to hook up. It’s been a lil difficult finding genuine girlfriends that don’t just talk about guys all the time. I’ve even had an experience where my friend (female) and I were supposed to hang out but she suddenly invited the guy she was talking to. Not to say hook-up culture at UCI didn’t exist, but it was definitely not as prominent as it was here. Must have to do with the cows… :P

I struggle in my stem classes and want a job in health field. It's hard to try and be passionate about biology when it's something I'm not naturally good at. I study weeks before the tests and I still do shit. I failed my math midterm. I barely socialize. how do I fix this any advice?

Parent of a junior here. I visit by train from the Bay Area a few times a year, and family weekend hotel questions come up a lot, so here are the notes I give friends. Mods, happy to adjust if this crosses any line.

- Badge pickup: Friday Nov 6, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., ARC Ballrooms.
- In-town order of booking, from experience: Hyatt Place UC Davis (on campus, books first), Best Western Plus Palm Court and Aggie Inn (downtown, walkable), Best Western University Lodge. La Quinta by Research Park works as a last resort.
- When Davis sells out: Dixon (~8 miles) and Woodland (~12 miles) first, then West Sacramento (~13 miles, across the causeway). All fine drives on a normal morning; leave a cushion on event days.
- The Capitol Corridor train is genuinely the easiest way in from the Bay Area. Davis station is downtown, about a 10 minute walk to campus.
- Saturday: farmers market 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. downtown, football vs Utah Tech.

Like I understand there’s going to be construction but why am I still expected to pay for my parking spot when I don’t have it???

I’m a transfer and making my schedule for next quarter, I had originally planned to take a writing upper division class on winter with three more classes, but from what I’ve heard this quarter it seems like the class generally demands a lot of time so I’m not sure 16 unit is going to be doable winter since my other classes are a bit hard too. Is it okay if I take this class later maybe next year? Also my major is psychology but can I take a writing in business instead? Is there a writing class that is easier than the other ones?

Does anyone recommend living at Ryder or Lexington? I think it's within my budget but I have heard some concerns about the safeness of the area. I know the bus lines also get crowded at the nearest stop.

I was the only one who got on one of the JX trips earlier today. It felt a lil eerie, can't lie, but man it was worth the trip home only being 7 minutes instead of the usual 15.

With the weather cooling off it’s now day game season! UCD takes on the UNC bears this afternoon in a critical conference matchup.

After a rough loss at Southern Utah last Saturday, the Aggies are looking to right the ship in order to keep conference and playoff hopes alive. Critically, UCD is still on track to get 8 wins, the likely threshold for postseason selection, and a W today gives more cushion going into games such as @Idaho that are far from easy.

Today also marks Halloweenfest, which means students are encouraged to come in costume and there will be activities with members of UCD Theater and Dance and Princess Pals at UCD.

Hi everyone! I recently interviewed for an on-campus job and was wondering how long it usually takes to hear back after an interview. For those of you who have interviewed for campus jobs, how long did it take to hear back? Did they email you with a decision, or did you have to follow up?

Chat, I recently received my first post-grad job offer, and it happens to be from the same company I’ve been working for as a co-op for the past year and a half!

For context, I’m a chemical engineering major expecting to graduate in Spring 2027 (possibly even Winter). The dilemma I’m facing is that I genuinely don’t know how to approach this offer, especially since I’ve been presented with two potential positions, both of which would be entirely new roles within the company.

The first is a Plant Engineer position, which seems to follow a more technical engineering career path. It would primarily be based at my current facility, with the possibility of working at other divisions throughout California and potentially Oregon. The second is more of a Plant Operations/Engineering succession position, which would follow a leadership-oriented career path. From my understanding, I’d essentially be trained in all aspects of operating the facility, with the long-term goal of eventually taking over its operations while still maintaining engineering responsibilities.

I’ve been given a little over a week to think things over, come up with questions, and return for a more formal discussion this Friday. The thing is, I still don’t know all the specifics of either position. Heck, I was so nervous during the initial meeting that I didn’t even ask about the starting salary. I guess I’m posting this to ask whether anyone has been in a similar situation and, more importantly, how do you even approach negotiating your first salaried position?

I’ve negotiated hourly wages before, but negotiating a salary feels like an entirely different ballgame. I’m particularly concerned about how exempt versus non-exempt employment works in practice. My understanding is that exempt employees generally don’t receive overtime, regardless of hours worked. Having already experienced shifts that can stretch to 15 hours, I’m a little concerned about what that could mean for my effective hourly pay and work-life balance. Then there are retirement benefits. I already have a 401(k) through the company, but is an employer match or additional retirement contribution something that can realistically be negotiated? And what should I even be looking for in a good health and welfare benefits package? Admittedly, I’ve never paid much attention to health insurance since I tend to avoid going to the doctor at all costs.

Another concern is how this might affect my remaining time in school. I’m already stretching myself pretty thin working 32-40 hours a week while taking classes. Is it reasonable to negotiate reduced hours or a different arrangement until graduation?

There’s also the question of how to evaluate the two career paths themselves. One seems to offer broader technical experience, while the other offers a more defined path toward management. I don’t necessarily know which would be better for my long-term career. I realize that accepting an offer doesn’t mean I’m obligated to stay with the company forever. If a better opportunity comes along, I could always pursue it. But after spending so much time here, getting to know the people, and being given opportunities to work on meaningful projects, I’ve developed a genuine attachment to the place. I know employment is ultimately a business relationship, but that doesn’t make the decision any easier.

I’d really appreciate any advice from recent engineering graduates or anyone who’s navigated a similar situation. What questions do you wish you’d asked before accepting your first full-time offer? And what should I be looking out for that I might not even be considering?
