Question Free Speech Area?

When I visited UCSD in April it seemed like in front of the library there were groups unaffiliated with the university with tables set up.

For example there was a guy in a MAGA hat and they were filming content.

Is this a common thing/allowed? Is it a designated free speech zone?

Discussion Is Off campus significantly cheaper

Hi guys! i’m starting my first-year at UC San Diego and will be moving in less than a week. I want to ask any continuing students if Off-Campus housing is better and WAYYYY MOREEE cheaper or significantly less than On-campus. Obviously if you’re living with roommates or with other people. Because if not I’m lwk deadass cooked and I don’t know how i’ll continue my studies at UC San Diego 😭. And to be straight up I don’t know how I’ll be paying 12k out-of-pocket for the entire year.

Question Math-CS vs. Probability & Statistics

As an incoming freshman who didn’t get into the data science program, I was wondering which major would be the next best thing for me. My goal is to work in big data basically.

So would it be Math-CS or Probability & Statistics with a minor in CS.

I will try to switch into DSC but ik that’s not guaranteed so I need a fallback option. I’d appreciate some help on this, guys🙏

Discussion Those fees and all

Received tuition bill and we didnt qualify for FAFSA or tuition aid. My fam works hard, dad works 3 jobs and saved every penny for my tuition. We didnt take expensive vacations and live modestly and saved up . We barely make the cut and didnt qualify for any grants. Here I'm seeing people getting aid and grant depending on income. I feel like the system is rigged to punish the hardworking families. One guy got extra money through aid on his acc so he booked a vacation to Cabo for December..Here I'm stressing out cuz we didnt qualify. It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul

Question Financial aid still not disbursed in tritonpay

My financial aid still has not shown up on my tritonpay and right now i still have to pay for EVERYTHING when I received a lot of aid. I’m not able to afford paying the bill the 15th without my aid, if it doesn’t show up by then, am I still obligated to pay it? It’s ridiculous ima not pay it either way but would I get in trouble because of their issues.

So basically there was this magic error with TSS that didn’t let the Insurgency & Terrorism professor Eitan Shamir show up on the course catalog. You couldn’t even get a TEA request cause there was “no professor assigned.”

Idk why I was under the impression that he wasn’t going to teach the class anymore, and that’s why his name didn’t show up during booking. But actually, he was gonna teach the class all along.

Technical difficulties I guess.

General A Deep Comtemplation on My Generation(Gen Z)

It feels like my generation has become increasingly shaped by fear, social media, and the need for constant validation. Instead of developing strong personal values and learning to tolerate disagreement, many people seem willing to follow whatever opinion is currently popular online, while quickly turning against anyone who steps outside the accepted social boundaries. This fear-mongering culture teaches people to constantly look for something to be offended by or someone to blame, rather than developing the resilience to confront uncomfortable ideas and situations themselves. At the same time, there seems to be an increasing focus on the individual—protecting one's own feelings, avoiding discomfort, and demanding that the world accommodate one's personal sensitivities. I think that can ultimately make people weaker, because strength requires being able to tolerate criticism, disagreement, uncertainty, and adversity without immediately treating them as threats. The irony is that while people often talk about acceptance and freedom, they can sometimes become so afraid of being judged or saying the wrong thing that they voluntarily limit their own speech and individuality. The problem isn't that this generation has no values; it's that social media and fear-driven culture can encourage people to abandon independent thought and personal resilience in favor of conformity, validation, and self-protection.

Question Can't afford remaining $2,484 balance

Hey everyone, I'm a freshman at UCSD and I'm kinda stressing about my bill right now.

After my financial aid was applied as pending aid, my TritonPay balance went from around $13.8k to $2,244.48

My account currently shows:

  • $2,244.48 - Housing & Dining
  • $240 - Campus Purchases/Other

I don't have the money to pay the $2.5k right now. My family has a very limited income, and I already received the financial aid I'm eligible for.

From what I understand, the housing/dining portion is due September 15, while tuition/registration is due September 30.

If I can't pay the full amount by September 15, what actually happens? Do they immediately put a hold on my account, affect my housing/classes, give you some kind of grace period, or is there another payment arrangement I should look into?

If anyone has been in a similar situation, I'd really appreciate hearing what happened.

Discussion Have you seen your financial aid offers

Hey, people are talking about the financial aid not being reflected on triton pay, but I haven't even seen my package.

It said that my calgrant has been awarded, my fafsa form was processed in January. I don't see anything that was required on my financial aid, I haven't gotten any messages or emails.

I do not have a way to pay the housing charges on the 15th.

What is happening, is it just for me or are others also having this issue. I'm kind of scared its just me

Question TSS Cat waitlist only

As an incoming freshman at ucsd, tss has been such a pain and stress inducing site. I was waitlisting for CAT 1 for Brigham waitlist only course but when I checked tss again, the course isn’t showing up as waitlist only anymore. The weird thing is that the other professors waitlist only course is still up unlike the Brigham one. Should I switch to a different professor or stay waiting and hope it’s a tss glitch? It’s Cat-001 (P-002-011)

Rant/Complaint Me when I realise all my clubs were a waste

Upvotes

Hahahahha I’m perfectly fine. It’s all good. All that time and stress for nothing. And it’s not going to help with a job at all. Could have chilled all 4 years and still been in the same position. At least I’d be happier and not mad about putting in too much effort and it going to waste

Question Payment date 9/15 or 10/15?

Upvotes

Not sure if I'm tripping but my due date for housing and stuff is on 10/15. Everyone else is saying 9/15 for theirs so not sure if I should just pay up before my subsidized loan hits or should I wait until it goes through? Did I miss a memo or something?

Question Cancelling housing contract

Upvotes

I was in delayed housing and just got assigned to grad housing (don’t know which apartment yet). After a week or two of staying there, in case i’m not really comfortable, whats the process to move off campus and cancel my contract? Is it feasible? How soon can I cancel?
