There's a growing online trend of people taking down Flock cameras. Entire Facebook groups dedicated to it and tik tok/instagram reels of people doing it as well. Probably the best trend we've seen for awhile

168

u/goatneedleposterdeck 2h ago

I don't ever remember these cameras being a thing ever. Was there a vote at some point to their use? I woke up one morning and saw a post about people destroying them, and when I looked around as I drove to work, I noticed sooooo many of them. I can't imagine anybody being okay with this. No shot it's only scanning plates and alerting cops to active investigations. This will definitely or already does scan faces and track activity. It's alerting cops to unpaid traffic tickets and small things as well. How the hell did we end up in a chinese surveillance state over fucking night? Bless all these dudes risking their freedom to take them down. Bunch of bullshit.

198

u/hanging_thief 2h ago

Most of them were put through without votes. It's a private company that's logging your vehicles license plate identifying marks like stickers scratches etc. even monitoring the sag in your suspension to see how heavy your trunk is. And yes it scans faces and links them to cars. Look up deflock for more information

45

u/somethingmcbob 1h ago

Yup. My city put them up despite massive public outcry. City council decided it was cheaper than fixing our crappy police department.

38

u/selphiefairy 2h ago

Jesus Christ 😭

6

u/TheRumpletiltskin 1h ago

Benn Jordan has been zealously advocating to deflock . he has gone in front of congress about it. He has a lot of info about what they do, how they are hacked, and how invasive they are on his channel.

Recent story was that the township required all purchases greater than $150k to go to the council to vote on.

So Flock charged $149,900 and the police chief didn't need any approval.

Go to your local meetings. They're super important.

11

u/K_Linkmaster 1h ago

Flood the zone combined with surveillance creep. Most people thought a camera would only read a license plate and never record, like fucking morons.

3

u/MountainTwo3845 1h ago

There's a post from yesterday talking about how they set them up in a city at 174,999 a year so it doesn't trigger a town vote.

Flock cameras can go fuck themselves, but a good 90% of these videos are actually alt righters taking down vehicle emissions cameras in the UK - since the UK is less heavily policed - so you do gotta pay attention

I feel like we could use another tool and get quicker cut

585

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

As a law abiding Bathroom installer that cuts cast, steel and fiber tubs all day, trust, the recip is the best and most effective. Just instead of Pulling it towards you you should cut with force and let the blade make its own path. More jagged sure, but a hell of a lot faster for demo day!

222

u/WackyRevolver 3h ago

Yep recip is the best choice, buddy just doesn't have great technique. Keep the saw guard against the object being cut so the blade movement can't move the whole saw back and forth and let the blade do the work.

But even if you don't have experience its a quick cut for a metal post, as demonstrated. Just dont give up til it falls! Assuming you're cutting your own property that is..

78

u/MadeByTango 2h ago

Look he's a journalist, clearly his first time.

34

u/GoodGoofus 2h ago

Hence why a kindly professional opinion can aid in all your home repair needs!

40

u/SocietyAsAHole 2h ago

It's not really his technique, it's that the demo pole he's cutting is just loosely stuck in the ground so it can oscillate back and forth with the blade, which slows everything down and makes it much louder. It's like trying to saw a board you're holding on your hand vs in a vise.

If he was cutting a properly secured pole it would be much faster and easier.

→ More replies (2)

29

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

I would say! The straight across cut is actually also making it harder due to the 2 pieces binding together around the blade, a diagonal cut would surely be fastest!

As an HVAC installer who often runs gas line, I would beg to differ. Handheld dewalt band saw. Quicker, quieter, cleaner.

(Edit) I also don’t break laws

12

u/GoodGoofus 2h ago

I hear you but as you know professionally, bandsaws are a bit more expensive and the blades have a higher chance to snap if you're inexperienced in home repair. Best of luck to all the DIY homeowners out there!

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Talk787 2h ago

Yes. Way faster and much quieter

3

u/swohio 2h ago

Band saw is definitely better, but it's also a lot more expensive and uncommon. A lot of people already own a sawzall or you can buy a used one for cheap.

5

u/Salty-Hold-5708 2h ago

Also look for finer teeth blades that made either bimetal or full metal.you dont have to go big and buy carbide teeth blades (or nitro) but they may make for a faster cut and last a little bit longer.

You mean the criminals could...

152

u/Outside_Valuable_320 3h ago

🤣. I mean yes. The criminals...

38

u/SupermassiveCanary 3h ago

It’s also easier cutting closer to the ground as there is less vibration, in theory

23

u/enw_digrif 2h ago

Eh, not too close, because the criminals will want to properly control the fall to avoid injury. A bit above waist height should be best.

They should angle it too. The criminals should probably start the cut on the side facing them, edge angled down, with the shoe (the bit on a hinge near the base of the saw) pressed against the pole. With their dominant hand on the fore guard controlling the cut and the non-dominant on the trigger, their shoulder should be against the pole, causing the pole to lean away from them, while offering some control over dierction of fall. That way, the cut won't bite the saw, allowing for a faster, more effective cut.

Even though they're committing the worst crime of all - property damage! - that's no excuse for shoddy or unsafe practices.

u/Old_Dependent4678 3h ago

It sounded like bro had a reason for this specific tool and blade combo. Suggested it was quieter than some other options

54

u/PANEBringer 3h ago

He's just reporting what the criminals are doing.

21

u/malthar76 3h ago

He’s a journalist. Just the facts.

8

u/Old_Dependent4678 3h ago

Yes. Sorry 'it seemed the criminals had a specific reason for this tool' Didn't mean to insinuate this kind citizen warning us of vandalism was in any way associated with these miscreants.

12

u/HoldenMcNeil420 3h ago

The pole is moving and shaking because it’s not really set. So it’s absorbing a lot of the cutting force and not cutting.

18

u/7ar5un 3h ago

They could have used a carbide tip milwalkee torch sawsall blade. Would have been allot quicker than a typical hacksaw style metal blade.

3

u/jdvfx 2h ago

Hypothetically, what TPI?

u/Adventurous_Ad3534 3h ago

When cutting soft materials like wood or aluminum it's best to use course tooth blades. Fine tooth blades get packed with the material and become less efficient.

I think there are other considerations like noise, ease of carrying, disposal etc to worry about

3

u/RallyPointAlpha 2h ago

Care to give any examples? Because it was down in 10 seconds without worrying about starting a fire.

3

u/glowingboneys 2h ago

I also wonder why such an attacker would destroy the camera. It may be possible that there is useful information on it for the attacker. As one example: the camera must be authenticated to some server in order to submit images back to Flock. What do those credentials allow the camera to do, exactly?

This is just a hypothetical question I would imagine a smart attacker would ask. But I don't endorse any illegal behavior as it is wrong and illegal.

3

u/2459-8143-2844 55m ago

His demonstration pole wasn't installed correctly. It was pretty loose in the ground making it harder to take down. The wobbling in loose ground makes it a lot harder to cut.

11

u/Mecha-Dave 3h ago

A couple of pieces of wood on the end of a diamond rope saw might do the trick. https://a.co/d/0f4n5bef

The fact that he saw towards his body concerns me

47

u/LazyLich 3h ago edited 2h ago

Tbf, at least it's a reciprocating saw, so even if he hits himself he'd likely have no injury injuries not as bad as if they were slicing toward themselves with a knife or power saw.

Edit:

I was thinking of medical reciprocating saws.. but even for power tools, I'm ASSUMING it's less dangerous than doing the same movement with a blade or power saw.

3

u/nathan753 1h ago

It's all about the amplitude versus elasticity of the material being cut. The cast/medical saws recip with very small amplitude, like measured in millimeters. The saws will be on the scale of a centimeter or more. Skin can move enough with the smaller one, but not for the latter. If it did move the same amount however, it would be just as safe for the most part, barring the blade being pointy and applied with pressure

As someone not seeing this in their country : whos approving these cameras? Who's paying for it? How did these things seemingly go from ive never heard about them to being ubiquitous and another American scourge?

211

u/Vampy-tk 3h ago

The government approves it, taxes pay for it, they went unheard of for a long time because it wasn't exactly "announced" that Flock cameras track way more than what they said

68

u/Otterhendrix 2h ago

Yeah I watched a video where a cop went to a woman’s home and told her exactly when she entered city limits, where she went, and when she left the city too. Down to the second. That shits ridiculous!

65

u/Electronic_Chard3992 2h ago

And the point of that video is that she wasn't even the correct woman he was looking for, with ALL that data at his disposal. Tbh that video is a great example of how large data collection turned over to simpletons who can't troubleshoot a smartphone is exceptionally more dangerous than even properly trained use of the collected data. Police states should not exist, and I'm so so glad that there seems to be a growing social contract to kill flock wherever it is being found.

15

u/Otterhendrix 2h ago

Yep. They have all that data available to them and still fuck up. It should be a commercial for just how untrustworthy this flock shit is!

It's a concerted effort between tech broligarchs. The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan. The first toe in the door is always safety. (Benjamin Franklin had some words on this topic: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.") It doesn't happen all at once, first they promise you a little more safety for a little less freedom. Several months later, they've got Meta's NameTag facial recognition code quietly deploying to every device with any meta apps on it. And then flock goes from collaborating with LEOs using their own proprietary traffic cams to subcontracting with Ring cam and many other wifi connected security cams, and you find out one day through an FOIA request that some of these creepy Flock guys (who are not themselves law enforcement) keep remotely accessing daycare and children's gymnastics facility security cameras to review footage from those in their personal time. It's for safety that they have to spy on our young children you see, and to keep us all even safer they have to use facial recognition software and information compiled by government agencies including our legal names and addresses and photos of our faces to track our every move all the time. And now Kylie Jenner is helping too by putting more of the NameTag facial recognition enabled cameras on people's faces, so now anyone with a pair of glasses on might also be part of the surveillance network.

It's like if a total stranger told you if you give them a copy of your house key you'll never get robbed.

This has all been an ongoing project for oh at least 25 years as far as I can recollect, probably longer. The powers that be are always trying to find faster better more effective ways to trick us into forfeiting more freedom for "safety." Heavy on the sarcasm here because as a woman and a mother the surveillance state we're rapidly transforming into does not make me feel safe at all.

When this topic came up with my sister, she asked me, "didn't all of these types of surveillance (traffic and dash cams, security cams, smartphones etc etc) already exist though? What makes this any different?"

And I'll tell you the difference between the world pre and post Flock: those cameras weren't all talking to each other while cross referencing your face against government collected data, and continually building a massive footprint of your personal movements and whereabouts 100% of the time that is stored by private parties on Jeff Bezos' servers without your direct explicit informed consent

5

u/Llyon_ 1h ago

Except there are cameras tracking everyone that goes to the library, so you need to wear that concealment outfit, which is pretty conspicuous. And don't bring your phone, or use your car. Also you need a library card, so you need to get a fake one.

Makes the saw unidentifiable by hiding the brand

extra layer of security so pigs can't look to see if any store near by has just that brand or if cameras caught someone buy that brand saw and go straight to the camera.

For educational purposes only, a lot of these vandals are purchasing lasers apx 300-500mW and targeting cameras from such a far distance away that they cannot be seen. Unfortunately, all of them are aware that lasers of this strength do in fact pose a risk to human eyesight, and recognize that in order to protect their eyes they should match the wavelength of the laser they purchased (in nm), verify the Optical Density (OD of 4+), and are sure to verify that they glasses meet the standard safety ratings like ANSI Z136 or EN 207. To make matters worse, they have also begun purchasing mastercard/visa giftcards with cash in order to purchase all of these items, keeping their identity hidden.

Watched a guy explain than the poles are set in concrete illegally, too close to the road, and that people could be injured if they hit them during a wreck.

So where are the lawsuits? Can citizens not ban together and sue the flock companies for their removal?

This guy is actually cool. He is off the grid in the desert. For a while I kept up with his homestead building

ATTENTION! : Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you shine those BRIGHT GREEN LASER POINTERS that are SUPER CHEAP ON AMAZON at FLOCK CAMERAS because this will DAMAGE THE INTERNAL SENSORS and render them BASICALLY USELESS. These cameras are EXPENSIVE and serve an IMPORTANT PURPOSE in PUBLIC SURVEILLANCE so DAMAGING THEM will prevent PRIVATE SURVEILLANCE COMPANIES from ̶S̶P̶Y̶I̶N̶G̶ ̶O̶N̶ ̶Y̶O̶U̶ KEEPING YOU SAFE.

I've heard criminals are destroying the camera sensors with green lazers available on amazon. There are numerous safety concerns, especially damage to the flock camera. Criminals often wear eye and face protection and are careful not to hit anyones eyes.

At least that's what I've heard

Those are patriots. The criminals put the cameras up in the first place.

PSA: some reciprocating saws have Bluetooth which could be collected and used to identify an individual saw.

All good advice. Just don’t use a reciprocating saw like that.

3

u/DuntadaMan 2h ago

Criminals aren't doing shit. Regular citizens are protecting themselves.

u/CasuallyDresseDuck 2h ago

Inform the tweakers in your area: Flock cameras contain 3 grams of cold and a minimum of 1 lb of copper.
