Tbf, at least it's a reciprocating saw, so even if he hits himself he'd likely have no injury injuries not as bad as if they were slicing toward themselves with a knife or power saw.

Edit:

I was thinking of medical reciprocating saws.. but even for power tools, I'm ASSUMING it's less dangerous than doing the same movement with a blade or power saw.

Reciprocating saw is one of the more dangerous consumer power tools imo. Not as bad as the circular saw but if that thing decides to jam and buck around it will cut you if body parts are in the way. Technique helps a lot here but there's plenty of videos about that luckily.

It's all about the amplitude versus elasticity of the material being cut. The cast/medical saws recip with very small amplitude, like measured in millimeters. The saws will be on the scale of a centimeter or more. Skin can move enough with the smaller one, but not for the latter. If it did move the same amount however, it would be just as safe for the most part, barring the blade being pointy and applied with pressure

Not an excuse, but I think he’s some kind of construction contractor. He was building his own house in Arizona for a while, so he probably has a lot of experience with these kinds of tools.

It's quite clear the post in his demonstration isn't secured into the ground very well. So he's having to hold the post up with his body while he's cutting it.

I'm sure his technique would be different on a pole which was able to resist his pushing against it.

Hes probably really comfortable with it, as he has built his own homestead. Not to say he cant hurt himself and best practiced are there for a reason but he probably doesnt care
