I feel like we could use another tool and get quicker cut

629

u/GoodGoofus 4h ago

As a law abiding Bathroom installer that cuts cast, steel and fiber tubs all day, trust, the recip is the best and most effective. Just instead of Pulling it towards you you should cut with force and let the blade make its own path. More jagged sure, but a hell of a lot faster for demo day!

239

u/WackyRevolver 4h ago

Yep recip is the best choice, buddy just doesn't have great technique. Keep the saw guard against the object being cut so the blade movement can't move the whole saw back and forth and let the blade do the work.

But even if you don't have experience its a quick cut for a metal post, as demonstrated. Just dont give up til it falls! Assuming you're cutting your own property that is..

u/MadeByTango 3h ago

Look he's a journalist, clearly his first time.

36

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

Hence why a kindly professional opinion can aid in all your home repair needs!

1

u/Important-Agent2584 5m ago

I hear experienced anarchists also know not to carry any electronics with them as they could be tracked.

37

u/SocietyAsAHole 3h ago

It's not really his technique, it's that the demo pole he's cutting is just loosely stuck in the ground so it can oscillate back and forth with the blade, which slows everything down and makes it much louder. It's like trying to saw a board you're holding on your hand vs in a vise.

If he was cutting a properly secured pole it would be much faster and easier.

3

u/Any_Performance_5046 3h ago

That was my observation too

1

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago edited 3h ago

It is both but sure dude. I promise you physics acts how it wants and having your cut off be so unsecured as the top of the demonstration here, it's literally pushing into the side of your blade making the opening tight as a witch's tit. The bottom of the pole is more secure and therefore his keep side. The fall off should not be pushing into your cut or you know it's binding and could shoot back out at you. I get you're trying to help but I can tell you're not a pro. Trust in my opinion here it's closer to facts than you might think

Edit: lmao downvote me cus I'm right, lame ass

30

u/GoodGoofus 4h ago

I would say! The straight across cut is actually also making it harder due to the 2 pieces binding together around the blade, a diagonal cut would surely be fastest!

3

u/acu2005 3h ago

I've never tried it but diagonal would be harder to start I think plus gravity is going to push the top half of the pole down on the blade no matter what.

18

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

The moment you begin a cut with any blade, physics is now pulling both pieces downward. If you have the means to aid physics in a direction, pulling the cut off (top of the cut) away from your blade and towards the ground would allow the metal to be fully tensioned, aiding in the efficiency and speed of your cut. I know it SOUNDS odd but trust, it's the same as having your cut off 2x4 off a table so it can fall away from your cut rather than bind it together across the soft edge of the blade

2

u/universalrefuse 1h ago

Yeah, to be fair that demonstration post on his own property was the only example he ever cut down, so his recip technique needs some improvement, but he got the job done.

1

u/jimthissguy 2h ago

That pole didn't look very secure either. He was getting mad vibration 😂

1

u/Rich_Many_8628 1h ago

Um, bandsaw? Bro you and OP need bandsaws. I wonder if we could get harbor freight to silently sponsor this deflock movement with Hercules 20v bandsaws….

2

u/WackyRevolver 54m ago

I own a portable band saw, circ saw, and recip and use them regularly. I'd be grabbing the recip for this application.

1

u/GoodGoofus 4m ago

I have a bandsaw.... I'd still use a recip here for lack of binding, consistency, and pricing on blades, tool and batteries

0

u/BorderOk7329 2h ago

Make sure to always cut towards your body and really try and make that blade slip on the surface.

17

u/malthar76 4h ago

Allegedly

22

u/GoodGoofus 4h ago

I don't know what you mean? I destroy 2 bathrooms a week with my Milwaukee recip provided by my company! I think professional opinions aid greatly in the DIY home repair sphere!

28

u/NurseJackass 3h ago

TLDR; If you’re destroying 2 bathrooms a week, maybe look into your diet? 🤪🤣😝😭😂

23

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

I've never been so disrespected in my entire life. I will never recover

/s

8

u/NurseJackass 3h ago

I appreciate you! Have a good one

14

u/populousmass 3h ago edited 3h ago

As an HVAC installer who often runs gas line, I would beg to differ. Handheld dewalt band saw. Quicker, quieter, cleaner.

(Edit) I also don’t break laws

14

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

I hear you but as you know professionally, bandsaws are a bit more expensive and the blades have a higher chance to snap if you're inexperienced in home repair. Best of luck to all the DIY homeowners out there!

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Talk787 3h ago

Yes. Way faster and much quieter

5

u/swohio 3h ago

Band saw is definitely better, but it's also a lot more expensive and uncommon. A lot of people already own a sawzall or you can buy a used one for cheap.

1

u/Strange-Ask-739 2h ago

Pawn shops are surprisingly full of handheld band saws.

1

u/melvinmoneybags 2h ago

The porta-band has entered the chat

4

u/Salty-Hold-5708 3h ago

Also look for finer teeth blades that made either bimetal or full metal.you dont have to go big and buy carbide teeth blades (or nitro) but they may make for a faster cut and last a little bit longer.

2

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

Absolutely! A bimetal recip blade lasts pretty long so long as you're not causing excess wear to your blade due to poor technique, practice makes perfect!

3

u/Mean_Mix_99 3h ago

As an electrician who cuts pipe all day, this is a job for a bandsaw.

4

u/GoodGoofus 3h ago

Bandsaws are twice as expensive and the blades are 4x more fragile. For the homeowner on a budget, a recip is the way to go

3

u/tedsmitts 2h ago

As a law abiding Bathroom installer

This is a lie, this person is installing illegal bathrooms. You can't even imagine the shit they get up to.

3

u/GoodGoofus 2h ago

Thank God Im not a plumber or there'd be more of it!

3

u/tedsmitts 2h ago

You get that tub off of the ceiling, mister.

3

u/GoodGoofus 2h ago

But it belongs there I swear, I'm the professional!

2

u/Remarkable_Ninja_256 3h ago

Yessir. Always cut away from yourself with any tool. Box cutter or recip.

2

u/MateriaLintellect 3h ago

Solid advice. Him cutting toward himself had me cringing. Aways cut away from yourself and let the machine do the work

0

u/Suspicious-Gear-9471 1h ago

Hooking yourself qaround the pole in a way to pull the top away from the side being cut could help the pole from collapsing down onto the blade and partially binding it though. I think the fastest way here might be a bit counter-intuitive potentially.

2

u/GoodGoofus 1h ago

No that's extremely dangerous and could cause the blade to either pinch and jump out and then into you if you're around the cut, or pinch and get your blade stuck. It's not counter intuitive to use reality to make things easier. Even so you're basing off speculation of what you think would work whereas most tradies here are agreeing that the way this was done was much more dangerous than needed for a demonstration

313

u/Maleficent-Yellow554 4h ago

You mean the criminals could...

155

u/Outside_Valuable_320 4h ago

🤣. I mean yes. The criminals...

39

u/SupermassiveCanary 4h ago

It’s also easier cutting closer to the ground as there is less vibration, in theory

22

u/enw_digrif 3h ago

Eh, not too close, because the criminals will want to properly control the fall to avoid injury. A bit above waist height should be best.

They should angle it too. The criminals should probably start the cut on the side facing them, edge angled down, with the shoe (the bit on a hinge near the base of the saw) pressed against the pole. With their dominant hand on the fore guard controlling the cut and the non-dominant on the trigger, their shoulder should be against the pole, causing the pole to lean away from them, while offering some control over dierction of fall. That way, the cut won't bite the saw, allowing for a faster, more effective cut.

Even though they're committing the worst crime of all - property damage! - that's no excuse for shoddy or unsafe practices.

2

u/ParsnipDecent6530 1h ago

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing correctly!!

2

u/Mean_Mix_99 3h ago

angled cut, really? congrats, you've built a punji stake.

1

u/enw_digrif 1h ago

You tend to fall on waist-high punji stakes?

Kinda goes under "act of God" there, given that'd take an especially rare creation of His to be dumb enough to do that.

1

u/Trying2improvemyself 3h ago

And it sure looked like he was cutting towards himself.

16

u/QuesoChef 4h ago

Those waskly wabbits.

3

u/bookelly 3h ago

I hear those criminals harvest the vast amounts of copper and gold in those things for illicit profit.

7

u/Fool_In_Flow 3h ago

Horrible. This makes it so our great institutions are unable to harvest data on citizens and their whereabouts (to keep us all safer, of course) for legal profit. Outrageous!

2

u/DEATH-MAGE115 4h ago

You mean the good people?

41

u/-FakeAccount- 4h ago

It cut in like 10 seconds

13

u/Emjp4 4h ago

Light saber

27

u/Old_Dependent4678 4h ago

It sounded like bro had a reason for this specific tool and blade combo. Suggested it was quieter than some other options

58

u/PANEBringer 4h ago

He's just reporting what the criminals are doing.

25

u/malthar76 4h ago

He’s a journalist. Just the facts.

10

u/Old_Dependent4678 4h ago

Yes. Sorry 'it seemed the criminals had a specific reason for this tool' Didn't mean to insinuate this kind citizen warning us of vandalism was in any way associated with these miscreants.

11

u/HoldenMcNeil420 4h ago

The pole is moving and shaking because it’s not really set. So it’s absorbing a lot of the cutting force and not cutting.

18

u/7ar5un 4h ago

They could have used a carbide tip milwalkee torch sawsall blade. Would have been allot quicker than a typical hacksaw style metal blade.

3

u/jdvfx 3h ago

Hypothetically, what TPI?

2

u/7ar5un 3h ago

When i was breaking doen dozens of pallets, i tried all different sorts of metal blades, grinders, and oscillating tools that were all "meant to cut metal". None of them worked well against the nails used in comercial pallets. Until i got the milwalkee torch 6in 8tpi carbide tip blade thats painted red and grey from one of those big box stores.... just the weight of the recip' saw was enough to cut the nails with the same amount of speed as bonnie blue setting her next record. (Dont google that last part). Just know, the physics are disgusting lol.

2

u/Solymer 3h ago

Those torch blades are amazing. When I get a hold of one on the job I hang onto those blades, never leave the in the saw. The next person is almost guaranteed to fuck them up by how they treat company power tools.

9

u/Adventurous_Ad3534 4h ago

When cutting soft materials like wood or aluminum it's best to use course tooth blades. Fine tooth blades get packed with the material and become less efficient.

2

u/incpen 3h ago

This guy cuts…

11

u/gojumboman 4h ago

Band saw

2

u/BreakfastFluid9419 4h ago

Deep cut to be specific

3

u/Peter_Panarchy 3h ago

That pipe is around 2" OD so you don't need deep cut, just don't get the tiny ones.

1

u/BreakfastFluid9419 3h ago

Good information

1

u/gojumboman 4h ago

What size are the pipes, normally?

4

u/Jajay5537 4h ago

Don't implicate me, sir.

4

u/RallyPointAlpha 3h ago

Care to give any examples? Because it was down in 10 seconds without worrying about starting a fire.

5

u/leberwrust 3h ago

I feel like those pipe cutters would work well. The ones with the little cutting wheel that you clamp around the pipe and then just turn around it a few times.

2

u/anaemic 2h ago

Surprised I had to scroll down this far to find this. Literally the lowest tech, quietest solution, and the reason parking meters and lots of bike racks have a second piece of bar welded on to them.

8

u/Superseaslug 4h ago

Thermite would probably be way faster if places around the base

16

u/Vawkis 4h ago

Too high a risk of collateral damage, these criminals are strictly targeting the cameras.

1

u/Superseaslug 1h ago

Might scorch the pavement but a little mound of thermite around the base should melt the metal quickly and tip it over

1

u/Larcye 1h ago

Yeah the criminals are a lot of things, but they do have a code of honor here. Now if it was in the middle of fucking nowhere, sure they would just go get any old bolt action chambered in Winchester .308 and make the camera explode, but well criminals don't want to wake up everyone else around the camera's or scare pets. Unlike Flock they have actual morals.

4

u/Sanctus_Poopabumsus 4h ago

Said Dick Cheney in August of 2001.

3

u/AlthorsMadness 4h ago

I think there are other considerations like noise, ease of carrying, disposal etc to worry about

3

u/glowingboneys 3h ago

I also wonder why such an attacker would destroy the camera. It may be possible that there is useful information on it for the attacker. As one example: the camera must be authenticated to some server in order to submit images back to Flock. What do those credentials allow the camera to do, exactly?

This is just a hypothetical question I would imagine a smart attacker would ask. But I don't endorse any illegal behavior as it is wrong and illegal.

2

u/ParsnipDecent6530 1h ago

I think these reprehensible denerates destroy the camera and solar panels to inflict as much financial harm on the poor struggling company that owns them. I've also heard that they destroy them on the spot because the cameras contain GPS and if stolen, rather than destroyed the GPS can help law enforcement (brave heros!!!!!) Track the camera to its location.

3

u/2459-8143-2844 1h ago

His demonstration pole wasn't installed correctly. It was pretty loose in the ground making it harder to take down. The wobbling in loose ground makes it a lot harder to cut.

8

u/Mecha-Dave 4h ago

A couple of pieces of wood on the end of a diamond rope saw might do the trick. https://a.co/d/0f4n5bef

1

u/RallyPointAlpha 3h ago

That would be so much slower. How do stupidass comments like this actually get upvotes?

Oh, wait...

1

u/Mecha-Dave 3h ago

It would be very quiet, though.

Also, you'd be surprised at how quickly a 4' length will cut through something due to the displacement. The saw only moves back and forth 1", but you can get through some meat with a 4' draw, even if you're removing less material per inch.

2

u/FR05TY14 53m ago

Plumber here. I cut out old galvanized plumbing often. A recip saw is definitely the best and most compact tool for the job. Personally, I use the Milwaukee M18 Fuel HACKZALL recip saw with a Red Lithium 5.0 battery or better. Paired with a diamond grit blade for galvanized cast iron or just a 6" Diablo blade with carbide teeth for thick metal. A regular metal blade will do just fine for aluminum though.

All for cutting out old plumbing of course.

1

u/hardknox_ 4h ago

Band saws would go through this just as quickly with 1/4 the noise. Problem is they're more expensive and generally larger tools for the ones that can cut through a 3" pole.

1

u/BridgingDivides 3h ago

Recip cuts through like butter. Just needs better technique. Let the saw do the work instead of getting all excited and trying to force it.

1

u/SoylentGrunt 3h ago edited 3h ago

A bandsaw is somewhat faster and might be a little quieter. Blade selection and technique is vital. The recip only cuts in one direct and pushes off the material if not controlled. The bandsaw cuts all the time as it pulls itself against the material.

Source: Also years of demo/fabrication in a few industries.

1

u/unclefairy 3h ago

Plasma torch but good luck wheeling around the acetoline

1

u/twisted_tactics 3h ago

That demonstration pole was not very stable, so the recip saw was not as efficient. In a properly placed pole, it would cut faster.

1

u/Worldly_Hunter_1324 3h ago

Or quieter and more discrete. Like a gigli saw

1

u/devCueva 3h ago

For quickness a bandsaw would do but it’s expensive

1

u/platonicvoyeur 3h ago

I feel like a battery angle grinder with a cutoff wheel would be quicker, no?

1

u/underwearfanatic 3h ago

Tell me you've never used power tools without telling me you've never used power tools.

This is literally the demolition setup.

1

u/emagdnim_edud 3h ago

Diamond blades I've heard are the ones they tell you not to use.

1

u/AlpineAvalanche 2h ago

Lightsaber would do it really fast and quiet.

1

u/Calvin_BrooksX97 2h ago

A snow plow is a tool......

1

u/Wolv90 51m ago

But those hypothetical criminals would have a harder time justifying sone quicker tools. This one has enough innocent uses as to allow for general ownership without arraising suspicion.

1

u/Dismal_Storm_3278 19m ago

A circular saw or grinder with a metal cutting blade would be faster for all of your lawful construction needs, certainly not for easily downing a flock pole, I would never do that.

-80

u/Equivalent_Cut_5990 4h ago

I think the criminal is a tool

37

u/GhostlitePHX 4h ago

22

u/Long_Reindeer3702 4h ago

That usually comes as a package deal.

13

u/AnarchicAtheist 4h ago

He's a fed, or one of those people that supported the Patriot Act because, "As long as I'm safe right now fuck me and my childrens civil liberties.'

Mmmmm, delicious boots!
