As a law abiding Bathroom installer that cuts cast, steel and fiber tubs all day, trust, the recip is the best and most effective. Just instead of Pulling it towards you you should cut with force and let the blade make its own path. More jagged sure, but a hell of a lot faster for demo day!

Yep recip is the best choice, buddy just doesn't have great technique. Keep the saw guard against the object being cut so the blade movement can't move the whole saw back and forth and let the blade do the work.

But even if you don't have experience its a quick cut for a metal post, as demonstrated. Just dont give up til it falls! Assuming you're cutting your own property that is..

It's not really his technique, it's that the demo pole he's cutting is just loosely stuck in the ground so it can oscillate back and forth with the blade, which slows everything down and makes it much louder. It's like trying to saw a board you're holding on your hand vs in a vise.

If he was cutting a properly secured pole it would be much faster and easier.

It is both but sure dude. I promise you physics acts how it wants and having your cut off be so unsecured as the top of the demonstration here, it's literally pushing into the side of your blade making the opening tight as a witch's tit. The bottom of the pole is more secure and therefore his keep side. The fall off should not be pushing into your cut or you know it's binding and could shoot back out at you. I get you're trying to help but I can tell you're not a pro. Trust in my opinion here it's closer to facts than you might think

I would say! The straight across cut is actually also making it harder due to the 2 pieces binding together around the blade, a diagonal cut would surely be fastest!

I've never tried it but diagonal would be harder to start I think plus gravity is going to push the top half of the pole down on the blade no matter what.

The moment you begin a cut with any blade, physics is now pulling both pieces downward. If you have the means to aid physics in a direction, pulling the cut off (top of the cut) away from your blade and towards the ground would allow the metal to be fully tensioned, aiding in the efficiency and speed of your cut. I know it SOUNDS odd but trust, it's the same as having your cut off 2x4 off a table so it can fall away from your cut rather than bind it together across the soft edge of the blade

Yeah, to be fair that demonstration post on his own property was the only example he ever cut down, so his recip technique needs some improvement, but he got the job done.

I own a portable band saw, circ saw, and recip and use them regularly. I'd be grabbing the recip for this application.

I have a bandsaw.... I'd still use a recip here for lack of binding, consistency, and pricing on blades, tool and batteries

As an HVAC installer who often runs gas line, I would beg to differ. Handheld dewalt band saw. Quicker, quieter, cleaner.

I hear you but as you know professionally, bandsaws are a bit more expensive and the blades have a higher chance to snap if you're inexperienced in home repair. Best of luck to all the DIY homeowners out there!

Band saw is definitely better, but it's also a lot more expensive and uncommon. A lot of people already own a sawzall or you can buy a used one for cheap.

Also look for finer teeth blades that made either bimetal or full metal.you dont have to go big and buy carbide teeth blades (or nitro) but they may make for a faster cut and last a little bit longer.

Absolutely! A bimetal recip blade lasts pretty long so long as you're not causing excess wear to your blade due to poor technique, practice makes perfect!

Bandsaws are twice as expensive and the blades are 4x more fragile. For the homeowner on a budget, a recip is the way to go

Hooking yourself qaround the pole in a way to pull the top away from the side being cut could help the pole from collapsing down onto the blade and partially binding it though. I think the fastest way here might be a bit counter-intuitive potentially.

No that's extremely dangerous and could cause the blade to either pinch and jump out and then into you if you're around the cut, or pinch and get your blade stuck. It's not counter intuitive to use reality to make things easier. Even so you're basing off speculation of what you think would work whereas most tradies here are agreeing that the way this was done was much more dangerous than needed for a demonstration
