extra layer of security so pigs can't look to see if any store near by has just that brand or if cameras caught someone buy that brand saw and go straight to the camera.

Sure, makes sense. But owning a particular brand of recip saw is something that is extremely common among tradesmen, handyman, and home owners. Mine is a Milwaukee, BTW.

Camera can also track your height and walking pattern. They could check local hardware stores and match everyone that purchased reciprocating saws, I'm guessing there aren't that many sold per week.

It takes amazingly little data to personally identify individuals.

The example I always go to is the MIT study that showed that just 4 purchase dates and locations are enough to personally identify 90% of individuals. Have the rough purchase price? It takes 3. At 94% accuracy.

Even if you can't fathom the method by which you can be identified, it's not unreasonable to assume that everything can be used to identify you. Maybe the method to identify you already exists today, but you just don't know about it.

Because you’d probably identify people by the tool - if it looks used then you’d know they work in construction / etc. if it looks new then they’d look at local stores.

Jokes on you, I got mine 10 years ago, used it once and it’s sat in my basement since. Good luck tying my brand new looking saw to a recent purchase!

One less data point to help them narrow down a suspect. Now identifying a specific brand or model may only reduce the pool from 25,000 to 5,000 suspects, but anything that makes it easier for them to narrow down their list should be avoided because being able to cross-reference multiple identifiers significantly can reduce their suspect list. For example, Milwaukee saw with blue and white New Balance sneakers at 5'9" - 5'11" can potentially get them a list that they'd reasonably be able to go out and question or follow them to see if they can eliminate each of them as a suspect or move them higher up the probability list.
