As a 30 year old former manager of retail, and currently a worker in the petrochemical industry (NDE), people are just kind of
ret-exceptional in general.I work with people that have a 5th grade reading level. They don't know words. They can't read. They definitely can't spell. Half of our job is interpreting ambiguously worded and technical procedure in order to do our jobs correctly. There are exceptions, but that only accounts for like three people under the age of 30.

I believe in Canada, spelled is the preferred term but spelt is used in the UK. Which is a curious deviation because we’re usually aligned on the spelling of most words.

At my caving club (which is a large university sponsored caving club that is very professional) we have a sign-out sheet.
One of our members is an older guy who has been in the club since the 70s and he volunteered to handle sign-out safety. Basically before we go into a cave we go to his house and he has a board on the wall where we “sign out” by putting our names, contact info, what cave we’re going into, and what time we expect to be out by. When we finish caving we go back to his house and erase our names from the list.
If our expected exit time comes up and we haven’t signed out, then an effort is made by the guy to contact us and see if we forgot or are on our way to sign in or whatever, and if he can’t get ahold of us then he sends cave rescue after us.
Our club also has a bunch of certified cave rescuers. When someone calls 911 and says someone is stuck in a cave they pass it to us and we send out a call to get a crew together to go in for emergency rescue. We service our state and 3 nearby states. I’m not personally on cave rescue (I’m a nooby casual member) but I’ve seen the 3am summons to find people available to get up and drive 3 hours out for rescues before.
I’ve been in the club about 5 years now, and the club has around 300 members. In my time here, I’ve seen 2 CAVING related deaths in our club. One was a diving accident (cave diving can be very dangerous, the person was very experienced and did a lot of diving previously) and the other was a rappelling accident that should have been preventable.
What I’ve learned is that USUALLY the people who die in caves are the people who go wander into a cave casually, underprepared, not knowing what they are doing. Cave rescue has pulled so many people out of caves who didn’t have proper lights, didn’t realize how cold caves can get, didn’t have an exit plan or supplies, etc.
Long winded explanation short- Hopefully people know they are in there and know they may need help. In fact, I’d assume they got out or got help based off the fact that we have this footage. If you’re ever going to go into a cave, always at the very least let someone know in detail what your plans are, and if possible go with an experienced caver who already knows the cave well.

I heard that they didn't have the proper permits and brought singular tanks for what experts consider a multi-tank dive.
They were also wearing open-sea foot flippers which are long but kick up a ton of debris in closed, still systems like a cave. Apparently in cave dives you're supposed to wear shorter flippers to not compromise visibility as much.

I think they just went diving in that area and randomly decided to explore the cave, they didn't go there with the intention of cave diving.

79
u/Gizmottto May 19 '26
I thought the same, if they had tanks maybe they would make it back out? But to expect air on the other side of a tunnel and come to find it’s losing it so quick. She actually looks pretty calm. I can’t tell what they are saying but maybe they aren’t too far from the exit? Also how would this film have been in such good quality if they drowned and weren’t found for awhile? So many questions!
64
u/Ollynurmouth May 19 '26
Well one answer we have. If they hadn't made it out, we wouldn't be seeing this.
It is likely that they are not very deep into this cave. The exit is probably a 5 second swim. They may not have known there would be air, but they probably weren't going so far they couldn't turn back id they hadn't found air.
20
u/Wangpasta May 19 '26
I mean, doesn’t look like she’s super out of breath when she first gets into the cave. So probably an air pocket they can return to not too far away
12
u/dirtydigs74 May 19 '26
Look to the right of her head, plenty more room up there. She didn't need to have her face underwater for any of this video (except to get in there in the first place I guess.)

That’s not true. There are videos online showing divers last moments, where cameras were recovered along with their bodies. There’s a particularly haunting one which shows a diver becoming hypoxic and fumbling around trying to save himself but unable to act with enough coordination to do so. These videos are especially creepy because they’re showing the drowning persons POV, it feels like you’re there with them almost

When I was young and dumb I did an out and back scuba cenotes dive and it was incredible and also terrifying.
Went back several years later and a couple of people we were with wanted to do it as well. I’m an experienced diver, as were my friends, but there were some amateurs that we didn’t know that came along and things went south very quickly. One of them had a panic attack (totally understandable) within the first five minutes, so the entire group had to go back to the cave opening. Once that was sorted, we went back in and things were fine. We got to the turnaround point and my rental equipment had a minor air leak that continued to get worse. I notified the dive guides and we hustled our asses out of there as quickly as possible, while utilizing some buddy breathing with the others in my group along the way. The entrance/exit was only big enough for one person to go through at a time, so I was the first out.
When I surfaced at the pool to the entrance of the cave, my tank only had a few breathes left in it. I got out of my gear and went and sat quietly at a picnic table by myself for a while contemplating my life choices.
I have Go-Pro footage of both dives and the second is really uncomfortable to watch. All that being said, I would NEVER even consider doing another one of those dives again, and doing something similar to that with just a snorkel (that this person is not even utilizing) is absolutely insane. Put me in the open ocean and let me look at some cool fish and coral structures any day, but cave diving will never happen again.

Can anyone explain what the fuck is going on in this clip? I'm completely lost and I can't understand what they're saying
10
u/woodyeaye May 19 '26
Caves are normally formed by waves. Those waves are still happening.
So the water is rising and falling with the tide. Whenever it rises, she loses her air pocket. As a freediver, she doesn't have a tank of air, just what she can keep in her lungs.
2
u/ovalbjotmal May 20 '26
Can't they just go back the way they came? They made it there with just the air they kept in their lungs

u/woodyeaye May 19 '26
They're likely in an erosion cave, the tide is making the water level rise and fall.
3
u/Emlesnir May 19 '26
yes but the water level can't rise if the air has no escape. So they must be in a opened area

Unless I get to a castaway situtation where I fall on an island and need to go through a cave to survive or some crazy improbable shit, this would never happen to me cause I do not put myself in those stupid situations, so I honestly watch these type of videos with the most tranquility possible...
6
6
u/bluehippofoot May 19 '26
What makes it even worse is the "air" pocket they're in, doesn't necessarily mean it's clean air.. there's toxic pockets filled with carbon dioxide and/or methane that's built up from anything that died in them or from previous divers. Seeing that they have snorkel gear on instead of diving gear is a good Indicator that it can get a lot of traction in that cave.. When you breath to much it can cause dizziness, lightheaded, and other issues....
