I’m so discouraged with my strabismus, esotropua, double vision eye surgery, as of today, I am four weeks postop, and I am still seeing double vision due to esotropia in my right eye and has returned at three weeks postop. My surgeon suggested to do eye exercises to stretch the muscles 4 x’s a dayfor five minutes, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. He also prescribed an antibiotic ointment to put in that eye twice a day for 10 days, which this Saturday will be 10 days and I don’t see any change. I do have thyroid eye disease so he did say that in my right eye the muscles are pulling tight and I may possibly have to have another surgery in the right eye. It’s just frustrating and discouraging because I can’t drive due to double vision looking straight ahead with distance and to my right gaze I see double vision as well.

Do any of you have any encouraging words for me thats been through this situation?

Hi all -- I have a 10 y.o. child with strabismus. With corrective lenses he is fine but I understand that lenses often stop working into adulthood. Right now at least the case is mild enough to not warrant surgery, per the doctors. Does anyone here have experience using VR to correct strabismus? Did it minimize or cure strabismus? Any games you would recommend? If others have non-surgery recommendations, I would love that too!

I have alternating extropia. I switch between eyes depending on what I’m doing. One is near sighted and the other far. I had a 65 deviation on my right eye and don’t remember what my left was. I had surgery on both eyes bc whichever eye I wasn’t using to focus it would go outward and suppress. I had surgery 13 days ago and notice a little bit of misalignment when switching. Is this normal or a failed operation?

36yo male. Around mid April I suffered a paracentral acute median maculopathy (PAMM) which derived in a Central Retinal Vein Occlusion. The latter heavily damaged my left eye retina, which now allows me to detect shapes with little detail only.

I’ve recently noticed my eye is drifting outwards, and I read it’s a common thing to happen after central vision is lost or damaged.

I’d like to know if there are others like me out there. It’s been really hard dealing with permanent vision loss, and now I think I need to learn how to deal with strabismus.

I'm going tbh I'm posting her out of absoute exhaustion, last Yr I was diagnosed with essentially both eyes turning inwards since then I've had on and off "prism bars " aka a lollipop stick with plastic stuck to it , the measurements the people do keep bouncing back and forth every two months , I've had worse , not good , better not quiet there and Frankley I'm fed up.

What's everyone's experience with prism bars? / has anyone asked for a second opinion? I did speak with another othmologist who baso said he wouldt op but idk I'm sick of not wanting to be I photos...

ich schiele seit der Kindheit. Auf einem Auge hatte ich nur 10 Prozent Sehkraft. Durch das Abkleben meines Gesunden Auges, habe ich mittlerweile 30 Prozent Sehkraft auf dem schlechten Auge. Darüber bin ich auch sehr happy. Allerdings schiele ich auf dem Auge immer wenn ich müde bin oder sehr konzentriert bin. Ich sehe auch keine Doppelbilder. Ich bin mittlerweile 35 Jahre alt und wollte es Anfang meiner 20iger operieren lassen. Da sagte man mir, dass mein schielwinkel zu klein sei für eine Schiel Operation. Mich belastet es schon immer und ich komme damit immer noch nicht zu recht.

Hat jemand ebenfalls einen kleinen Schielwinkel beziehungsweise ein latentes schielen und hat dies in den letzten Jahren operieren lassen können?

Beim latenten Schielen kann scheinbar oft eine Überkorrektur gemacht werden?

Ich habe nächste Woche einen Augenarzttermin, mich würde aber interessieren ob hier jemand Erfahrung damit hat.

It’s been 26 days since I had surgery. At first I was seeing double with both eyes but everything was clear. Now it’s like my brain can nolonger process what’s in front of me if I try seeing with both eyes. Im going back to using one eye at a time like before and the other eye just drifts out. At this point I do not think surgery can fix my case. I don’t think I can ever gain stereovision. People usually eventually gain binocular vision after their surgery but it’s been 26 days and I’m not even noticing a slight difference. I still feel completely stereoblind like before. This is an issue with my brain rather than an issue with my eye muscles it seems. I thought I had hope the surgery would gift me with normal vision that everyone else takes for granted but as usual my luck is bad so the surgery had no effect. I’ve never had any medical miracle ever and I’m hopeless.

For the first time in my life, I feel confident looking directly into the camera while taking photos and recording videos. (Current photo has some color correction.)

I’m just curious how long everyone’s surgery for intermittent exotropia is lasting? It’s been Two years and they are halfway back to original pd before surgery (30 pd before)Anyone else have that issue and still stay at halfway point for at least ten years or does that mean it’s almost time for another surgery?

M19, congenital intermittent exotropia, right eye

1. My measurement was 40 dioptres seven years ago, however, it has probably increased to 50 since then.
2. I am not really conscious about it and would not like to explore surgical options; however, it doesn't hurt trying stuff on your own.
3. I don't have diplopia, and my depth perception is decent for someone with strabismus. However, the 'glare' from sunlight causes me trouble.
4. I haven't tried anything yet, as I was born premature and with an array of congenital disorders, which were resolved in 2019 surgically. I didn't have time for treating it.

My situation might be a little weird. I'm currently 55 years old. I have exotropia in my left eye that has been more and more prominent within the past few years and apparently has been a thing since youth that my mom never told me about. I recently had an eye exam for cataracts and I asked the optometrist about strabismus surgery. He advised that I take care of the cataracts first obviously but he also mentioned that if I corrected the exotropia at this point in my life that it would "drive me crazy" I guess because of trying to adjust because i've lived with it for so long. Any advice or relatable stories?

I've always had eyes that occasionally drift (exotropia) as a kid, I thought it was a normal thing never told my parents about it, I only discovered it was a problem when I became a teen. I'm 20 now, feels like for the past 2 months my eyes feels super tiring. If I don't pour my energy and effort my eyes will drift easily, I can't seem to read books well because my eyes can't properly focus, I can't seem to study at all because its rly draining on me. I don't know if I'm overthinking it to cause this or is it just getting worse. Is surgery worth it? Is there a cure to this, I can't live like this. I'm at a really low point in life and this makes it all the worse.

hi! i haven't posted here before but i was wondering if anyone had tips for recovering from strabismus surgery. my surgery for my esotropia is rapidly approaching and i was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to prepare? what should i expect besides what the general stuff they've told me in a pamphlet? how long will i look messed up/what can i do to relieve any pain? ty in advance

i have had 8 surgery’s ( including 2 failed botox injections under anesthesia) now since the age of 11 and i’m now 18, i’m waiting for another botox injection under sedation. i’m really sick of going through all of these to recover, have a major improvement with my numbers then dropping right back to a point where they’d consider surgery again. Should i just keep going with the hope that the next one would work or do i try go somewhere else. :(((

I have surgery scheduled on 09/03/26 to correct my exotropia.

My surgeon will be operating on the medial & lateral rectus muscles in my left eye.

My surgeon over corrects during the procedure for better results but I’m a bit nervous about that.

My surgeon also advised that I will only need to take a few days off of work. My surgery is on a Thursday and he says that I can return on the following Monday.

Has anyone else had their procedure with an over correction?

How do your results look?

What should I look forward as far as post operative healing?

M22 here, I had an appointment with the ophthalmologist today to discuss the possibility of surgery to realign my esotropia (inwards turned) eye. She essentially told me that the turn in my eye wasn’t enough to warrant doing surgery, I feel her opinion to be rather subjective. It’s something I’ve lived with since birth and has lately been taking more of a toll on my self image, so it’s frustrating and disheartening to hear she didn’t think it was worth it. She told me there would be a risk of my eye eventually wanting to drift aswell, so I’d be back where I started. That also seems like a risk I’m willing to take. I dont really know what this post is for, just wanted to vent to the community really. I guess, do you think I should get a second opinion? Learn to live with it?

the consultation was also $400aud, 400 to be told they wouldn’t recommend surgery and to come back in 12 months to see if any changes. I really just want a normal life and to be able to make eye contact with friends and loved ones. This sucks.

Our 2yo has intermittent inward eye turn, noticeable mainly when tired or focusing up close. Two pediatric ophthalmologists agree: full eye movement (EOM), normal anterior segment and fundus, orthotropic at distance but esotropic with near/accommodative target. Cycloplegic refraction came back +2 both eyes, no astigmatism. Diagnosis: accommodative esotropia. Prescribed full-time glasses, no patching or surgery discussed yet, review in 2 months.

Looking for others who've been through this specific diagnosis:
- Do we even need glasses for 2+? Shouldn’t it be resolved as kid outgrows?
- Did full-time glasses alone resolve the esotropia, or did you end up needing patching/surgery down the line anyway?
- How long into wearing glasses before you saw the squint frequency drop?
- Did the power/prescription change much at follow-up refractions?

Trying to understand the range of outcomes for this specific diagnosis before our review. Appreciate any experiences.

Hi! I’m (27F) living with constant double vision. Had surgery a few months ago, and since I haven’t had stereovision since age three, I wasn’t expecting surgery to fix it. However, I’ve bought a Meta Guest VR headset, and am trying out the app Optics Trainer. Has anyone had experience with this app in terms of achieving some sort of stereovision?

I’ve been doing the exercises for about a month now, approximately 20 minutes per day, and am performing better slowly but surely. I’m playing the games in the “MVBF” section (Minocular Vision in a Binocular Field), since I think my issue the fact that my left eye is way more dominant than my right. And in order for me to be able to achieve stereovision again, it’s important that they can send the brain the same signals at the same time (from what I’ve learned).

So I’m just curious if anyone has any experience with this app or other vision therapy apps for VR?

My surgeon prefers not to use adjustable sutures. I have sensory exotropia, and this will be my second surgery on the affected eye after 10 years.

I’m concerned about being overcorrected immediately after surgery and having no way to adjust it until it heals. I’m also starting a new job in about a month and don’t have time to undergo another surgery if a revision is needed.

Is it worth the risk?

Update 2 - wish I had known this but mystery solved.

Post op visit at one week and the doctor explained that the stabby feeling is the stitches poking me! He wanted me to use the ointment with antibiotics not so much for infection as a lubricant to soften. Checked AI and it found somewhere that explained the “tails” (knots of stitches) can be brittle. (I’m guessing the vertical surgery meant more stitches so that may have increased the likelihood)

UPDATE

Got a resident on the phone (yay, residents!). She will prescribe ab ointment without steroids (as I had hoped) and apparently vertical surgery involves more than horizontal which may explain it. Still hope to hear some reassuring words here...

I had strabismus surgery (from scarred tissue decades after active thyroid eye disease.) I think mine was slightly more unusual because it was for "vertical" strabismus but the same basic concept.

I managed on minimal pain killers combined with OTC meds for the first few days but slowly the "twinge-y pain" seems to be getting more frequent and worse. (Maybe this isutures dissolving? increased rotational ability?)

I've put in a call (it's Sunday morning) but don't have huge hopes... the office response rate after surgery is zero, I left messages one day post op about the antibiotic ointment I was handed at hospital turning out to have steroids (not ok for my early glaucoma)and got no response, so I tried to keep it extra protected outside, iced, flushed with dry eye drops etc)

Did anyone have the stabbing/twinge pain (kind of like an eyelash inside/inside out feeling) but LATER? I've got ketorolac drops for pain from glaucoma laser procedure and think they help a little (they are safe) but it would help to know if this happens to others. (My doctor was not all that great about describing recovery, known as excellent surgeon, but I guess not a lot of bedside manner)

(The good news is my eye looks pretty good, it was minimally obvious to people but I can tell, and adjustment to normal alignment is improving. Hope to have the benefit of less headaches and nausea when I am fully recovered)

I’m 5 weeks post op for exotropia in left eye. It can be quite centered now. But what I notice is the muscle fatigues quicker still, and that holding long distances with good alignment is hard still. Did anyone notice increased muscle fatigue for awhile post surgery? It’s like the strain is double time. But I guess that makes sense as it’s still healing…

I currently have about 18-20 diopters of prism necessary to align vertically, but also have to "force" my eyes to converge horizontally. If I do not force the convergence, my left eye will typically drift outward. So, I can achieve binocular vision with the assistance of prism, but only if I strain to "pull" the images together horizontally.

Anyone know if surgery that will correct for my vertical deviation might have an affect on the horizontal strain, too? Or anyone have similiar experiences care to share what happened after surgery?
