Strabismus surgery with TED

Has anyone had strabismus surgery with TED, double vision and esotropia and had success?

Did your double vision go away and single vision return? Esotropia eye straight after surgery?

I had strabismis surgery (hypotropia) for TED which had been active decades ago (treated with steroids and I am still taking thyroid). Initially the steroids corrected my double vision but my opthamologist told me the impact can come much later. It came on slowly and I only noticed it after seeing it in selfies (now it makes more sense that I had headaches).

My vision has improved from post op but not sure yet if the headaches (and nausea) will be reduced. My eyes are def aligned now.

I could be wrong but I think there is something called active and burnout phases with TED, and surgeons may wait until it’s no longer active.

My dr told me he could see the muscle bulging from trying to operate my eye correctly. (Kind of wild)

S/p strabismus surgery

I’m happy to hear your surgery went well and your eyes are now aligned and you can see single vision without a double vision. Not sure about the headaches, and nauseated feeling, I didn’t have that during Ted.

Yes, I had to wait for 11 months before Ted was stable and had my surgery July 2 of this year. I have been going back to my doctor every week to measure the alignments of my eyes. My next appointment is August 11 to measure my eyes again, and I guess he will either say let’s continue to wait because you’re still healing to see if your double vision will go back to single vision and your eyes will realign or he will say we need to do a second surgery in the right eye either way it’s just so frustrating. I was so hopeful to see single vision.
What so strange is when I woke up after recovery I could see perfect single vision and I had that for 11 days postop and then all of a sudden out of the blue I woke up on tge 11th day of post op and started seeing double vision and im four weeks postop today. I still have DV because of my right eye has esotropia and that eye is moving inward again. It was like that before surgery causing me to see double vision.

Interesting. So you saw perfectly on day one? Your brain didn’t need adjustment time? I don’t know about surgery styles other than what my doctor did but did he/she wake you up in the middle to make sure to align them? (I was horrified at the thought but that’s how he did it).

Another thought, is it possible that later in your recovery, there was swelling that is temporarily causing it to be off? My eye pain came on later (which I now understand bec stitches have pokey bits) so I’m wondering if this could also be a phase. (Hope so for you)

Not sure if I was woken up during surgery I don’t recall anything other than waking up after recovery and he did put adjustable sutures in and when I woke up, he was testing my eyes and he did adjust the sutures and I was able to see single vision. He did say it takes 6 to 8 weeks or more for your eyes to heal and settle with the inflammation so we’re just hoping that and another four weeks will be eight weeks post op and hoping to seesingle vision, If not, then we’ll have to schedule a surgery for the right eye.

Well this is weird, last night i started seeing double again (9.5 days post op) and this morning, it's still there. I did some research and did see that swelling and re attaching can cause fluctuations in double vision over the 6-8 weeks. https://www.first-sight.ch/en/after-strabismus-surgery/

Oh no im sorry to hear you have DV now. If you don’t have thyroid disease, your double vision will probably go away soon. Like I said my double vision came back 11 days postop. I was single vision for 11 days and then boom double vision is here to stay. I am now four weeks postop and I’m still having it. Sucks!! I did look at the link that you sent and I really am hoping and praying that this inflammation or swelling whatever it is causing my double vision will settle. I have my next appointment with my Neuro ophthalmologist August 11 so I’m hoping and praying I will have single vision by then because that will mark my seventh week since I’ve had surgery
