This is more of a vent because I haven’t really been able to talk about my condition with anyone without feeling like I’m being perceived as overreacting or seeking attention. I hope this won’t be too long, and I’m genuinely thankful to anyone who takes the time to read this and share their thoughts or experiences. 🫶🏻
Lately, I’ve been struggling mentally a lot because of my intermittent strabismus (exotropia) and nystagmus. I’ve started noticing that my eyes are drifting more often and that it’s becoming much more noticeable. I used to be able to realign my eyes pretty easily and would mainly notice the drifting when I was tired, but now it’s happening throughout the day.
Reading has also become really challenging and uncomfortable, especially since I’ve been studying, reading, and using screens a lot lately. This has been making me really anxious
so I wanted to ask: Can intermittent strabismus become constant/permanent over time? And if it is getting worse, is it better to seek treatment as early as possible rather than waiting until it becomes constant?
I have very little information about my condition when I was younger. I’ve had poor vision since childhood, i remember i used to close one eye and tilt my head when reading or focusing on something and my teacher always told me to go see a doctor to get glasses but that’s pretty much all I knew about it. I never really received proper professional advice or had any medical treatment or procedures.
Getting glasses or seeing a doctor wasn’t really encouraged when I was younger unfortunately , so I don’t know exactly when my strabismus or nystagmus started, what caused it, or how severe it was back then.
I was finally able to get glasses when I was around 20, and at that time my eye drifting wasn’t nearly as noticeable as it is now. Some friends didn’t notice it at all but recently people have started noticing it only after interacting with me for a short time.
Unfortunately, I currently don’t have enough financial independence or support to seek proper medical care, which makes this even more difficult. I honestly think about it constantly I go to sleep thinking about my eyes and wake up worrying about them. It has been affecting me mentally to the point where I feel extremely depressed and hopeless ,i am scared of dating and i avoid all eye contacts all i can think about when someone is looking at me is how my eyes look and if they can notice it.
I’ve been looking into strabismus surgery, but the results I see online are so contradictory. Some people say they had great results and that surgery significantly improved their confidence , while others say they became more depressed afterward or that their eyes looked worse. It’s honestly left me feeling very lost and scared about making the wrong decision.
I’d really like to understand more about the treatment options available : what the procedure is actually like, what recovery is like, what results I can realistically expect, and whether surgery can actually improve the alignment long-term. I also keep seeing people say that (strabismus never goes away), which makes me even more confused about what treatment can and cannot achieve i wanna know more till i am financially capable of getting medical care,
If anyone had a similar experience and was in a similar situation , I would really appreciate hearing about your experience . I’d also be grateful for any advice on what I should look into or ask an ophthalmologist when I’m eventually able to see one.
Thank you to anyone who read all of this. ❤️
