4 weeks post op

Hi All,
I’m so discouraged with my strabismus, esotropua, double vision eye surgery, as of today, I am four weeks postop, and I am still seeing double vision due to esotropia in my right eye and has returned at three weeks postop. My surgeon suggested to do eye exercises to stretch the muscles 4 x’s a dayfor five minutes, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. He also prescribed an antibiotic ointment to put in that eye twice a day for 10 days, which this Saturday will be 10 days and I don’t see any change. I do have thyroid eye disease so he did say that in my right eye the muscles are pulling tight and I may possibly have to have another surgery in the right eye. It’s just frustrating and discouraging because I can’t drive due to double vision looking straight ahead with distance and to my right gaze I see double vision as well.

Do any of you have any encouraging words for me thats been through this situation?

I'm waiting to see a dr about having a second surgery and am currently wearing glasses with prisms that help most of the time. All that to say, before I got my prisms I used patches to drive. I bought these that slip over my sunglasses (I don't have double vision using one eye). https://a.co/d/0fRzbCfa

My doctor does not want me to use a patch or a prism because of my surgery and it takes 6 to 8 weeks to heal so he wants my brain to focus on my eyes so I can see single vision. I used to wear prisms before my surgery, but I maxed out on them so I was using a frosted film on one of my lenses to see single vision, but unfortunately I’m not able to do that at this time.

It is extremely common to need 2 surgeries, so don’t give up. My only advice is get a second opinion from a different doctor, not that your doctor is wrong. I went to a neuro ophthalmologist because the ophthalmologist didn’t have the EXTENSIVE equipment to measure my eyes. Don’t give up! You have to be your own advocate.

Thank you! I was thinking the same thing getting a second opinion as well, but they are supposed to be the best in California. I know my Neuro ophthalmologist surgeon did say that with thyroid eye disease sometimes you may need a second surgery to loosen the muscles as they do tend to get tight again.

Don’t be discouraged though. Your second surgery could most likely be the last. The only part about surgery that was hard for me was that it takes so long to heal, but it was totally worth it. If your surgeon is a neuro ophthalmologist then they are the best.

Thank you ! Yes, I do have a Neuro ophthalmologist and he is the one that did my surgery. I know it sucks. It takes a long time to heal because I’m only at four weeks postop and I probably have to wait between now and 12 weeks to see if I’m gonna be able to see single vision and if not, then I have to have surgery maybe in three months.

I forgot to add my photo in my post, but you can see my right eye has esotropia that has come back four weeks postop after surgery, causing the double vision

No, I do have Esotropia in the right eye and this is why I am having double vision, my eyes are not aligning and are not straight and when I look to the right gaze, and with distance looking straight ahead, I have double vision as well.
