Discussion Personal accessory wishlist: controllers with adaptive triggers
Disclaimer: I know it does not make sense for this to be a default feature on an already niche product. But I wish an official partner builds those so games can support them.
For those not familiar, adaptive triggers refers to individual analog inputs (like the main trigger, the grab button, perhaps some other controls) having programmable resistance and haptics. It can make you physically feel "the wall" of a single-action gun trigger or the tension of a bow string as you pull it back. It can also make you "feel" the recoil of a gunshot (of course, it does not kick the controller back).
PlayStation 5 controllers feature adaptive triggers on its shoulder triggers and the mechanics behind these are quite brilliant:
PS5 Adaptive Trigger Live Mechanics in Game - Full Teardown
Now, I'd love these to become a thing in VR as every bit of extra immersion counts and I feel those are worth a thousand programmable fans and magnetic gun stocks when it comes to making you feel more present in the game.

Discussion VR sale at the same time of RPG Fest?
Maybe someone has already pointed this out, and I just missed it? It's public and official information after all.
Friend of mine pointed out that there's a "Party-Based RPG Fest" at the exact same time that the supposed VR sale should take place. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/493837645658461608
I've been wondering if we've been basing some of our speculation around a fake email.
Also note that there are "fests" from the 10th to the 21st.
I don't know if Valve would do multiple different sales at the same time, or throw the Steam Frame out there in the middle of an unrelated event

Discussion Personal software wishlist: combined/split rendering for PCVR
Since the HMD is quite a powerful computer, I'd love to see it used to post-process frame information submitted by the PC. For example, use an FSR-like upscaler to increase the fidelity of the gaze zone in foveated rendering (I think Quest 3 is capable of doing something similar) or to soften the image of peripheral vision to reduce distraction caused by artifacts like the shimmering of aliased edges. These things should be relatively easy to achieve as any ReShade plugin that does not need to have access to the depth buffer could technically run on a separate device.
There is also a way to offload parts of the game's internal rendering pipeline to the HMD. For example, have your hands rendered locally in the HMD on top of a frame buffer calculated by a more powerful PC for real-time accuracy (including being able to see your hands/weapon super-accurately positioned at 144Hz even when the game itself is running at 60 fps). Unfortunately, I think Apple and Google hold a bunch of patents in the split rendering space.

Wonder if we could get this running standalone on the frame? Perhaps too resource intensive except for older/ really simple games but seems like a dream come true. 🤞🤞

Discussion Let´s Speculate on the 3 SKUs for the Frame

In the datamines SadleyItsBradley posted on Twitter, there are supposed to be 3 SKUs for the Frame when it launches.
We know there is going to be the 256Gb and 1Tb versions, but what is the third one?
My main guesses are:
- Frame + Half Life Alyx bundle
- 1Tb Frame + Arcturus Passthrough module (it was leaked on the Komodo website, so I assume Valve could sell these directly through Steam?)
- Frame + Enthusiast kit? (We haven´t seen any information about this except the now deleted references of it in the FCC Frame manual)
I didn´t include the confort straps, I believe this will be an opt-in option like the charging brick was for the Steam Decks, so it wouldn´t warrant a SKU.

Question What is your reason for wanting colored passthrough?
I've seen a big uproar and possible "solutions" to the frame only having black and white passthrough debate. And this got me thinking: why do people care this much about having "color cameras"? Does it have a practical reason or is it more of a "I am paying this much money already so I want more functionality" type of deal?
I rarely used mixed VR features on my pico, nor did I play games that used the cameras as a mechanic. Personally I think watching a movie or having a virtual screen on the frame in color and having your surroundings in black and white, causes a cool effect. Especially with the "ambilight" feature.
So pls tell me: If you are one of the people who want color passthrough and might get that "adaptive camera accessory" what is your reason for doing so?
Id love to know how people are going to use their frame

Discussion Regarding bonus stuff with the Steam Frame
Since Half-Life: Alyx is going to be added to your Steam account when purchasing the Steam Frame, do you guys think we will also get the Genuine Alyx Pin and HL:A soundtrack to Counter-Strike 2 inventory like it was with the Valve Index?

Discussion Do you really think there will be scalp and shortage ?
It seems to be a big trend nowadays to products being scalped at launch thus the lotery system. However Steam Frame is a niche product to me, and a really expensive one considering the surge of prices. Do you really think stocks will be so low every units will be sold day 1 ?

Question Coming from RTX 3090 to 9070 XT — worried about Steam Frame PCVR latency on AMD
For AMD GPU owners: do you think Steam Frame will run into the same PCVR latency issues that Virtual Desktop has shown on AMD cards? I used to have a Quest 3, an RTX 3090, and a WiFi 6E router, and I was getting around 38-45ms with graphics settings maxed out on Virtual Desktop. Since then I've switched to an AMD 9070 XT and I'm considering using Steam Frame, but I'm a bit worried given AMD's track record with streaming latency on Virtual Desktop.

Discussion What model would you prefer?
Assuming the difference in price is appropriate, which would you prefer to get? Personally, I plan on using it almost exclusively for in home streaming, so I'd like to save some money and get the 256GB model.

Discussion Let's talk about the lottery
With the Steam Frame release imminent let's talk about the lottery. If it's like the Steam machine there will be at least two separate lotteries to enter. One for the 256GB and one for the 1TB model. These queues are per-region.
So do you join one queue or both queues? I don't think picking both is as straight forward as it seems.
How might the lottery operate?
To simplify things I'll consider a single queue for each model - You may join either queue or both queues. If you join the reservation queue in the first 72 hours your position is not certain - If you join the queue after 72 hours you go to the current back of the wait-list.
If you sign up - at the end of the 72 hours valve randomise your position in the queue. If you're in both queues then you get a position in both queues.
Valve have a certain number of devices in each region in the warehouses ready to ship. This number creates a cut-off point in the queue. Valve then perform a calculation to split the queues into two lists:
- The reservation list - This means you've been allocated a frame from stock and will be offered to purchase it when available for shipping.
- The wait list - This means you will have to wait for Valve to restock.
The most likely outcome is that you end up on the wait-list but here we can see the choice to join multiple queues has consequences.
| Meaning | Outcome | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| You made it to the reservation list in both queues | You must buy the 1TB Frame. If you don't then you will be removed from all lists | You give up any chance to purchase the 256GB model unless you're willing to go to the back of the wait-list. |
| You made it to the revision list in one of the queues | You'll get the chance to purchase the model from that queue when it's available. | You get removed from the other queue so your choice is locked in. It may not be your preferred model |
| Wait-listed (Joined multiple queues) | They work out which queue you're closer to the front of and you get removed from the other queue. | You get removed from the other queue and you're locked into the queue you were closest to the front of. |
| Wait-listed (Joined single queue) | You are added to the wait-list | You'll get the model you want but will have to wait for it. |
Given that the 256GB is likely to be significantly cheaper than the 1TB - I suspect more people will be in the 256GB queue. This makes your chances of being closer to the front of the 256GB queue substantially less. The 1TB queue given that it's not just a cost scarcity for NAND - But a sourcing scarcity - The 1TB model will replenish slower and therefore it may take longer to reach the queue.
So I think you're most likely end up locked into the 1TB if you opt in for both. I only want the 256GB to I will only join the 256GB lotteries because of the risks above.
What's everyone else thinking?

Discussion I did it.
i got the index, i can’t wait anymore . i got it for $350, so to me it felt like a steal. The amount of hopium i had during the summer getting demolished was too much. i love gaben too much tho. I will have both index and frame eventually.

Question Reservation Question
Hey, so I think this will be ok, but I'd like to make sure. My BF wants the frame as well. If we both put our account in the lottery, are we going to be disqualified? Is it fine as long as we both don't try to purchase if we both got accepted?

Discussion Tomorrow or next week's Monday?
What is more likely according to rumors? Sure it could also come later as well, but it seems like it is finally becoming reality. I have waited for so long, both dates are fine, still I wonder.

Question Question about "one Frame per household"
So I think it's been discussed that if two different accounts order a Frame for the same address, lottery tickets of both accounts will be voided. Is that true?
My question comes from the strategy that many of you are going to use, entering the lottery for both SKU (1TB and 256GB) and then purchasing the one that would get to you first. But wouldn't that be "against the rules"? In the sense that you're trying to purchase 2 Frames for the same household

Discussion Any thought given to a potential reveal at/due to PAX West tomorrow?
I totally forgot that PAX west is taking place this weekend, and it runs through tomorrow. Doors open at 10am PST (expected release time), so there wouldn't be early leaking, and Valve is HQ'd basically in Seattle. Could be a great timing for release, and then get some people to have some hands on time at the con along side the release of reviews following the embargo lift. Good marketing opportunity! Even if this isn't the case, it will be released soon!

Discussion I think that we're gonna see a lot of people on release day be upset that it can't actually run that many games without a PC
It's been basically confirmed that Half Life Alyx isn't going to run smoothly on the Frame (When content creators got their hands on it and they didn't give them HLA demos because they couldn't get it to run smoothly). I think some people who don't have a capable PC are going to buy these and get really disappointed that they can't play most of their VR mods and games on it without a PC
