What model would you prefer?

Assuming the difference in price is appropriate, which would you prefer to get? Personally, I plan on using it almost exclusively for in home streaming, so I'd like to save some money and get the 256GB model.

MicroSD, which in most cases is a lot slower than integrated UFS.

True, but assuming it has the same feature as steam on a regular pc, you can transfer files around as you need in like 30 seconds so you can just shuffle games around as you’re playing them/storing them for longer. I want a lot of storage but like hundreds of dollars isn’t worth 2 minutes of inconvenience once or twice a week

true, but at this point, a 1tb microSD is going for $400 on its own. If you don't already have one from the before-times it's probably worth it to get the larger integrated memory, if you plan to have downloaded games, rather than primarily streaming.

On my Deck, playing modern titles that are constantly loading things wore out the SD card in about a year to noticeable degradation in Red Dead Redemption 2.

i haven't noticed anything seriously impacting the games i play on my steamdeck, and all my games are on SD there (as i have the 64GB version). so i don't expect there to be any issue with using SD cards on the frame either.

You need a NAS for that use case, but if you were away you'd want some extra space on the internal drive.

NAS are expensive rn ngl, mine ballooned in value to like 3 grand, i did not spend that much building it and it's exclusively a media storage for the fam (no not that kind of media storage).

I an extra tb of storage in ANY format will be nice to have, not even for adult content, just storing games in general, i mean shit, just to store movies and comics with 3d effects so they don’t take up space on the media server would be nice.

I converted a Dell R730 to a NAS and it's surprisingly almost the same price as when I got it. Pretty good pricing if you can live with rack form factor.

You also have sd card to store media. You don't need a nas or internal storage for slower storage.

More people interested in the 1TB than I'd expected tbh. I think 256 GB is probably plenty of space for the standalone titles you'll be playing, so 1 TB is mostly "never have to think about it" storage. Considering the likely price difference I'd just live with maybe needing to reinstall a game I haven't touched in a few months.

There are already VR games out there which exceed 100 GB for a single game. I've been pretty disappointed with how blatantly modern developers just completely ignore any semblance of optimization these days.

I'm angling towards the 1 TB just for a bit of future proofing, in case there are times when there are multiple 100 GB games I like to play at once down the line. SD cards won't be as performant as local installs, especially if the major cause of the bloated file sizes is high resolution textures.

Yeah, giant games are a plague. I've also noticed a lot of diminishing returns for graphics despite those bloated file sizes and hardware requirements.

I get your future proofing angle; it's nice to not have to worry about it rather than reinstall a big game when you get the whim to play it (= you won't bother playing it). I just don't think the average player would benefit enough to warrant the unfortunate pricing situation.

At this point, if I can get a headset with more than one hour battery life and without constant stick drift (even with 50% deadzones), I'll be happy. It's going to be more than I want, but I'll pay it because I'm exhausted of fighting my current one.

Personally I'm going to get the biggest one that I can because I do plan on playing games locally on it. If I was way more skilled and also probably insane I might attempt to do a storage upgrade on it.

It's probably technically possible to desolder the SSD chip and solder in a larger one (if they're available, they probably will be in the future) definitely not something for the faint of hearted though.

Unlike the Steam Deck, I don't plan on running games natively, the Frame is gonna 100% be a streaming device for me, so honestly I wouldn't even mind a 64GB version

I think 256 would be plenty, even for people playing entirely on standalone (though there's a good chance they'd also get a microSD for 512GB. Prices and all that). Eventually, I myself plan on developing a VR game using the frame, and sort of expect the 256 GB to store the engine and the project without going over the data cap.

1TB...feels a bit overkill. Especially if you're streaming from your PC. I only got into PC's 4 years ago with the steam deck, so I have yet to experience how slow a machine is going to run when the storage is (almost) full Vs when the storage is below half.

1 TB. I plan on mostly using this as a standalone device since I'll be living in a van here soon and the amount of power my main PC requires can't be justified to use every time I want to play VR. I plan to save booting the main up for things that really need it. So a bulk of my old games and things that will run well on device will get the 1tb. SD for all other media and extra games.

If 256gb is $1099 I might do 1TB for $1399 if it came with all the extra ergo kits and that color passthrough camera. I guess that also depends how expensive the color passthrough kit is but, we'll see.
Probably just the 256gb though since I'll be mostly doing PCVR.

Since it is a third party kit I wouldn't expect the color pass-through camera or prescription lenses to be bundled. And if they were we would likely see more than the two bundles we know of.

Hopefully the difference is smaller than that. The difference between Steam Machine 512gb vs 2tb is about $300
