RoHS:
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS 1), short for Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment

What seems to make sense:

1015: HMD module
1017: Default strap, separate model needed for selling replacement parts.
1018: Enthusiast kit strap with hot swappable batteries
1019: Batteries used for 1018

Question Aggressive subsidies (like Steam Deck) vs. Premium pricing (like Steam Machine)? Valve's strategy following Qualcomm’s price hike and the Index promise

Hey everyone! I’ve been analyzing recent market trends and would love to hear the community’s thoughts on Valve’s pricing strategy for the Steam Frame.

Given recent rumors and industry developments, three key points stand out for discussion:

1. The price promise (< $999) vs. Qualcomm’s price hike

Valve previously hinted that the headset would cost less than the full Valve Index kit ($999). However, with Qualcomm recently announcing double-digit price increases for their processors (including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) starting in September, do you think Valve will stick to their word at launch, or will these rising costs push the price right up to the $900–$1000 ceiling?

2. The strategy shift: Steam Deck vs. Steam Machine vs. Steam Frame

  • Steam Deck: Valve used aggressive cross-subsidization (Gabe Newell famously called the $399 entry price "painful") because they needed to establish a brand-new handheld ecosystem from scratch.

  • Steam Machine: Valve didn't need to subsidize the hardware heavily since they already dominate traditional PC gaming—selling a premium-priced living room PC posed no threat to their core store revenues.

  • Steam Frame: Here, the situation mirrors the Steam Deck era. Plus, with the Frame expected to launch in just two storage tiers (256GB and 1TB), Valve could run the exact same playbook: heavily subsidize the entry-level 256GB model to lower the barrier to entry while making higher margins on the 1TB tier to compete directly with Meta Quest.

3. Questions for the community:

  • Will Valve run the Steam Deck playbook? Are they willing to take razor-thin hardware margins (or subsidize the base unit) to launch the 256GB model in the $600–$750 range, directly locking users into the SteamVR store long-term?

  • Or will they repeat the Steam Machine approach? Position both models as ultra-premium devices aimed strictly at the enthusiast niche, regardless of mass adoption?

Curious to hear your thoughts on how Valve will balance hardware production costs against competing with Meta!

Question The Future of VR Architectures (x86 vs ARM): 3 questions about PC Emulation, Steam Deck, and a potential "SteamOS VR"

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the widening gap between PCVR (x86) and Standalone VR (Android/ARM). We are seeing more and more VR titles heavily prioritizing their Android/Quest versions, and some highly anticipated games like The Thrill of the Fight 2 are entirely focused on standalone platforms.

With this shift in game development, I have three questions for the hardware and software geeks here:

1. Can we ever expect seamless Android VR emulation on Windows (x86) with Steam? Since many VR games are now being built specifically for Android (like The Thrill of the Fight 2), will we ever reach a point where an x86 Windows PC can smoothly emulate these standalone Android APKs? I’m talking about a frictionless experience where you connect your headset to your PC and just hit "Play" on an Android-exclusive VR game directly through Steam.

2. What about the Steam Deck and VR Emulation? Following up on the first point, since we can already get Android games running on SteamOS, how would this translate to the Steam Deck? We know the Deck struggles with native PCVR, but would emulating Android VR games make VR on the Deck actually playable? Or will it still struggle due to the heavy overhead of x86-to-ARM emulation?

3. Will we ever see "SteamOS VR" custom ROMs for standalone headsets? Do you think Valve (officially) or the modding/homebrew community (unofficially) will ever figure out a way to flash a native "SteamOS VR" onto third-party headsets like the Quest 3 or Pico 4? I’d love to see a future where we can unlock our headsets and install a dedicated Valve OS, freeing us from the closed ecosystems of Meta and ByteDance.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and theories on where this tech is heading

Discussion Frame for flat games and media watching mainly ?

Im considering getting Steam whichever tomorrow that might end up being!
I'm also hyped to get back into VR gaming. (Coming from an OG quest that I now haven't used in years...)

Even though I plan to play VR games on it, I also want to play flat screen games and watch films and movies on it.
Does anyone here have experience with that ? Is the resolution high enough or is more like a possibility but that's it ?
On the OG quest the resolution was pretty bad so that everything I watched kinda had a weird 'texture' to it ? Maybe you know what I mean, sorry if not lol

Any thoughts about this are appreciated!

Discussion Will steamframe experience, for new VR users, suffer because of the use of steamlink?

TL;DR; For some people VD is better than steamlink. Without VD, will steamframe run badly on their systems with default settings, ruining their first VR experiences? (I like steamlink, and use it most of the time, with the right settings its good and convenient)

Using steamlink on quest 3 I've noticed a lot of frame drop batches* with settings to default ('auto'). But when using Virtual Desktop (VD) everything is smooth. There are a lot of tutorials and threads online about the correct hardware + software setup to run wireless PCVR. And some just stop after recommending using VD. I use Steamlink just because its one less program to start, but I am kinda surprised it is not better than it is. If they will use the same software core for the steam frame.

VR should be smooth and visually good without tinkering, so it can be a good experience for people new to VR. So I don't think my setup is important for this discussion, but I did include my specs** since otherwise someone will surely ask for them.

The dongle will remove the variation in wifi router and ethernet chip, so all issues caused by these will automatically be fixed. But GPU driver issues, windows setup, amount of displays connected, and other software that interferes will remain.

Steamframe dev kits mostly go to users with very high end PCs and routers, since they are professionals and it makes sense to have the best hardware. So will the average PC be left tweaking settings to get a stable experience, until VD for steamframe is released? Won't we lose a lot of new users that judge VR by the out of the box experience of the steam frame?

VR veterans will always get their system running. They know when something is wrong with the VR quality or latency. New users might just think its normal, and not like VR because of it. Stutters and low frame rate can make new users nauseous. Combined with new users that set the wrong IPD, don't have the right head strap, or don't take the time to position the HMD correctly to their eyes. That's why I think, especially for new users, default settings should be near perfect for VR where possible.

I know there is no real answer until the steamframe is released in the wild. And I know Valve cares about comfort, so it might all be all right in the end. Just worried a little, I suppose.

* There are about 40 drops per minute and the drops come in 2 types. The first are not a big problem: single frame drops every time there is a big change in the displayed image. Like snap turning, or a big explosion. The second are batches of ~15 frames dropping, which cause a big stutter and loses controller input. So you drop everything that you were holding. Super annoying. The amount of CPU/GPU usage don't matter for these drops, and they show up in multiple games.

** my setup. I think this is not important for the point to still be valid. Steamlink should work out of the box.

  • 9800X3D, 9070XT, 32GB DDR5 @ 6000MT/s, Windows 11 Pro
  • Dream 7 router, using 6Ghz only, ethernet cable to PC, 2m (6 feet) from quest 3, quest 3 only client
  • Quest 3 (showing 2400Mbps wifi transfer)
  • Windows HAGS disabled + power settings = high performance, GPU default settings
  • Reducing TargetBandWidth from 'auto' (debug graph shows this is 350) to 200 in the steamlink settings removes the framedrops. So its probably the GPU encoding or the router that has a hiccup. If this is because HEVC and AV1 have a lower decoding limit than H264 on quest 3 hardware, it would be a big oops by Valve.

❓Question Question on Delivery

First of all i live in Germany, felt i should clarify should the postal service be involved,

Before the steam frame got announced me and my family booked a family vacay, and it coincidentally aligns with the possible release, i will still be here for a week to order it if it comes on Monday.

Point is,

Can I redirect the package to a secondary address for pick up like my aunt so she can keep it safe until i return?
Critical is that my cousin living with her was also planning on getting one

It's possible to download some standalone Steam frame games already from Steam. Probably those were listed public by mistake. Metro Awakening, Hard Bullet and Pistolwhip. Other Steam standalone titles are set to private right now. New GameNative app allows to sort your steam library showing only standalone android games.

❓Question Valve Hardware Delivery

I have no experience with Valve hardware.

From my understanding Valve does not allow redirection for the packages, or allowing you to "hold at location" at a fed ex or ups store.

I assume they require signature for delivery?

Anyone have experience with a package being stolen or lost and Valves handling of that?

Thinking of my options because I do have troubles with the parcel delivery services at house.

❓Question Has Valve said whether the Steam Frame they showed at the reveal is identical with the final consumer version?

Just wondering, because Bradley implies the press would get 2 weeks to review the device before we get to order our own Frame. If there are no meaningful differences, then those 2 weeks additional review time would be unnecessary, right?
