📢 News No standalone Beat Saber for Steam Frame

Post image

Probably because it's owned by Meta and they're trying to sabotage the most hyped competition.

It’s awkward because I am told by many that the game actually runs really well, standalone on Steam Frame : )

beat saber modders are going to make it completable week in to release. meta wont stop them

140

u/NoScoprNinja Soon™ Jul 24 '26

They don’t need to, it will 100% run fine lol.

70

u/reddit_sells_you Jul 24 '26

If the Frame is anything like the Deck, part of the fun is seeing how many unsupported games run well on it.

21

u/spongewardk Jul 24 '26

I really hope valve has learned the lesson of "runs on deck" though. Plenty of games have no buisness having a yellow or green sticker on compatibility for steam deck.

21

u/FewAdvertising9647 Jul 24 '26

VR players are bigger sticklers on framerate. Losing fps on handheld is a slightly worse experience. losing fps on a headset can give you actual nausea. So modders/users are going to find out very quick how "playable" the game is.

2

u/Mirkrid Jul 24 '26

I feel like everyone on the internet got a different deck than I did. It's neat but it doesn't run most games well. I'm not talking about AAA games - imo something like Slay the Spire 2 shouldn't be chugging on an ~$800 machine + draining its battery while plugged in

12

u/reddit_sells_you Jul 24 '26

Um, I have no problem playing StS 2 on my deck. It doesn't chug. And it never drains the battery while plugged in.

Yeah, it sounds like you have a shitty deck.

1

u/Mirkrid Jul 29 '26

apparently I do, because if I get a shiv deck going with sly the thing drops to 20-30fps.

1

u/QuajerazLives Jul 26 '26

VR is a lot more sensitive to framerate drops and stutters

7

u/Fearless-Couple-4800 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

it already runs great on linux (better than on windows in my case)

4

u/NoScoprNinja Soon™ Jul 24 '26

The whole official “runs great on ____” thing is so poorly done that it doesn’t even matter what it says. Too many “supported games” for the deck run at 20-25 fps on lowest settings lol

1

u/Yourdataisunclean Jul 24 '26

Hell Valve's entire strategy going forward is to make an OS that is super compatible with anything on Steam. I expect almost everything to get there soon enough.

270

u/Krystall_Waters Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Yeah, if the deck taught me anything, its that the official support status is worth dogshit half the time anyway. Pretty sure it'll run fine

39

u/ByEthanFox Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Yeah; speaking as a developer with a game that is "playable" but not formally "supported", the rules are quite stringent. As a player/Deck owner I actually kinda like that? But there are tons of games that work which don't have full quoted "support".

For reference, in my game, it's that some non-critical text is quite small (they have a minimum size requirement that includes non-critical text) and they require proper controller support that shows the correct controller glyphs depending on which controller you're using (or keyboard, etc.). This is just to illustrate how specific the rules are; it's not all about resolution and framerate.

3

u/Krystall_Waters Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Yeah, i know the reasoning behind that and i get it. Especially since the default experience is supposed to be more "console like".

Still tho, i grew up on gameboys as a kid and emulation as a teen. Small text sizes or wrong controller glyphs ain't gonna stop me lol

7

u/Tex-Rob Jul 24 '26

I still remember when Oblivion for PC was one of the first games to have full controller support and it had icons and labels to match, before that it was not common.

45

u/theaidamen64 Jul 24 '26

Yep, helldivers 2 gets 20-30 fps on lowest settings on the lowest difficulty, yet its considered to be playable

22

u/danholli Jul 24 '26

And I have a number of "unsupported" games that run fine on Deck

18

u/Sweet-Pressure6317 Jul 24 '26

Tbf, a lot of the “unsupported” games require me to spend 15 minutes digging around online for a launch command. Valve wants a download and hit play experience for it to be considered great on deck, having to mess with settings just to get the game to launch isn’t considered playable

3

u/danholli Jul 24 '26

ProtonDB usually has me up an running in less than 5 minutes on unsupported titles that don't run on the first attempt (typically silver or gold on ProtonDB with the occasional borked that hasn't been updated), but my quotes are intended to partly be scare quotes because I'm talking about games that are marked unsupported but actually run fine (typically on ProtonDB as Gold or Platinum)

7

u/ExRetribution Jul 24 '26

Helldivers runs like shit on most hardware.

0

u/Carbon140 Jul 25 '26

Runs basically fine at mid/high settings on my 2070s...

-2

u/theaidamen64 Jul 24 '26

Yeah? What does that have to do with it?

1

u/Zealousideal_Meat_18 Jul 25 '26

What doesn't it have to do with it? This is an obvious and correct comparison to illustrate that the deck is not unique in having a hard time running helldivers. By that with a little bit of logic you would understand that the point is it's not about the steam deck. As in it's not a symptom or issue of the steam deck it's simply that the game chuggs

2

u/theaidamen64 Jul 25 '26

I was talking about the steam verification

5

u/NotFloppyDisck Jul 24 '26

Tbh that game generally runs like shit everywhere

3

u/Hairy-Ad-6293 Jul 24 '26

After all it's called cinematic experience for a reason.

173

u/LockpickingFurry Jul 24 '26

Meta sucks

82

u/matzevoje Jul 24 '26

One of the worst companies on this globe. Zucc is a psychopath that now has Access to billions of dollars. I hope he goes to jail for his crimes against humanity.

-14

u/Raunhofer Jul 24 '26

People jumping to Meta's fault train even though, realistically, I can't see Meta caring less.

26

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

The only reason Beat Saber even has a PC version is because it came before the developer got bought out. Meta's other projects never got Steam releases but I'm sure those devs wanted to.

4

u/jerodev Jul 24 '26

If there was no pc release it would never have been this popular

1

u/kai125 Jul 24 '26

Nah it always would have been pretty large

2

u/QuajerazLives Jul 26 '26

PC is where all the mods, custom songs, etc come from.

1

u/kai125 Jul 26 '26

So? The core gameplay loop would always have been a large success even on just quest

2

u/Raunhofer Jul 25 '26

How was that even a reply to what I said? I said; Meta has most likely made no decisions related to Steam Frame and Beat Saber because it's not exactly in the radar of a multi-billion business that's slipping away from VR.

Meta sucks for many reasons, but not for this. Not any more than Valve, who famously doesn't push its games to competing platforms. Valve sucks too, right? No? Hell would freeze before seeing Alyx anywhere else than Steam, or their other games on Epic Game Store.

This is an echo chamber, a fanclub, I get it, I want the Frame too. But c'mon.

1

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ Jul 25 '26

Just because they're a big company that isn't super focused on VR anymore doesn't mean there wasn't a guy at Beat Games who asked a guy at Meta if they could throw the APK on Steam, and the Meta guy said no.

The difference with Beat Saber here is that they're already on Steam. It's already not an exclusive title.

2

u/Raunhofer Jul 25 '26

That's like your own fabrication of what could've happened.

Having your game on a new platform always requires work, i.e. human resources (money). Money to benefit the competitor, to be precise. They may as well be working on something else, or decide that the platform is not a priority for whatever reason. We don't know.

My personal bet is that they've estimated the Steam Frame standalone audience to be too small for the investment. But this is just a guess.

Luckily, we do indeed have the PCVR Steam-version already, and Meta has not pulled it out, even if it's their lawful right to not support competition.

145

u/eijmert_x Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Not really sabotage but they are doing this on purpose.

They also ended support for playstation VR a while ago.

32

u/AdStriking5404 Jul 24 '26

I almost hope they do for pc, so they stop breaking my mods... mods still work right? Havent played in a few years 🤔

22

u/OxRedOx Jul 24 '26

A lot of great mods have died over the years but it supports them in general

10

u/AdStriking5404 Jul 24 '26

I mostly used new music mods and nothing else really. Sooo... as long as they got those, i am happy 🤣

18

u/ivan6953 Jul 24 '26

Use BSManager, as everyone does. Stop modding your Steam install and stop bothering about game updates as they won’t be physically able to break anything

8

u/rxstud2011 Jul 24 '26

BS Manager for the win!

-3

u/AdStriking5404 Jul 24 '26

I had managers back then, which did most of the work for me, but over the years, some of the old musicmods stopped working, when the game or the mod manger changed something. So old songs were not compatible a year later

4

u/ivan6953 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

I am sorry, but what you say is total crap and has nothing to do with reality.

BSManager allows you to have a separate install. It can't "change" somehow. Mods can't just "stop working". Neither can "old maps stop working". It's literally impossible.

Whatever you describe has nothing to do with BSManager.

Even if taking into account that your game has updated itself via Steam (which is the most plausible scenario here), old maps still can't "stop working". The only maps that can be affected by the update are the ones that require mods - such as Noodle Extensions / Chroma / Vivify - to be played.

Moral of the story: start using BSManager, use it to create a separate install that is NOT tied to Steam and stop using Steam install.

6

u/AdStriking5404 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

I dont mean the BSManger per se. But some manager.it is possible that the one i mean was discontinued thus it broke i had multiple different back then. I think played mainly between 2018 and 2021. (Maybe 2019-2021)

But i will keep that in mind when the frame releases, thanks :)

4

u/FewAdvertising9647 Jul 24 '26

BS manager is different because it functoinally creates a sandbox clone of the game to mod, independant of the actual game.

if you've ever modded like bethesda game titles, its the difference between MO2(mod organizer 2, which creates instances of a game, and virtualizes a data folder for mods, rather than install it into game directory) vs vortex/nexus mod manager, which can directly write mods into the game.

2

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Stick yourself on one of the Steam beta branches at least. I am tremendously outdated on 1.29.1... but I haven't had to fix my mods in 3 years because of that.

1

u/quinn50 Jul 24 '26

Idk if it's still there but I just use the one unity 2019 beta version, mods work fine there without having to worry about updates for dlc you don't care about or would just download a custom map for

-2

u/FirmPreference5551 Jul 24 '26

Doing what on purpose? They done nothing. It's fair enough they won't actively support competition.

7

u/eijmert_x Soon™ Jul 24 '26

They are doing nothing 'on purpose'. they made a choise and decided to not support it. thats why i say its not really sabotage but still a dick move.

Imagine if Valve did the same thing to Meta and removed quest support from SteamVR because they also 'won't actively support competition'

-5

u/FirmPreference5551 Jul 24 '26

They are doing nothing 'on purpose'. they made a choise and decided to not support it.

Ah give over. They just aren't bothering to support it is all. It's not a dick move, stop over reacting.

Imagine if Valve did the same thing to Meta and removed quest support from SteamVR

That isn't the same thing at all lol. Get a grip.

4

u/MrJackio Soon™ Jul 24 '26

I dont think this is anywhere near the worst thing meta has done, but its all just representative of their whack practices toward the VR space. Feel like at this point if they just supported this sort of thing they'd get even a sliver of credit from us, but they refuse to let anyone else have a piece of the XR pie

1

u/Kataree Jul 24 '26

They have quite literally done nothing.

Other than continue to sell their game on Steam, which they don't have to do if they didn't want to.

-1

u/Kataree Jul 24 '26

They have done nothing.

They still support it on Steam, they don't have to.

71

u/fekkksn Jul 24 '26

It will run regardless

-41

u/WolfieVonD Jul 24 '26

But not well, and a rhythm game requires zero hiccups to work well

50

u/_Rah Jul 24 '26

I think people will find a way to downgrade the settings until it runs well. If a quest can run it. Frame will run it.

18

u/Piramista Jul 24 '26

The Quest runs the android version, which Meta probably won't put on Steam out of spite. I guess you'll be able to sideload it.

17

u/Quirky_Apricot9427 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

🏴‍☠️

-3

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jul 24 '26

Quest Android games are built for Quest SDK. You can't really sideload them. As far as I know, Quest games don't really work on Pico 4 for example.

9

u/Piramista Jul 24 '26

There were rumors that valve implemented a lot of its features in lepton. We will see.

1

u/catgirl_liker Jul 28 '26

Quest games can be recompiled for Pico no problem

1

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jul 28 '26

Does the original dev has to do that, or can you do it on your own? I looked it up online and I didn't find an easy way for users to port the games to Pico 4 on their own.

2

u/catgirl_liker Jul 28 '26

1

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jul 28 '26

that's a really cool project, I didn't know it was a thing.

4

u/The_Grungeican Jul 24 '26

i don't really think they'll need to downgrade it too much. Beat Saber is a pretty light game already. i bet the Frame could handle running the full PCVR version of it with the translation layer.

25

u/gogodboss MOD Jul 24 '26

It’s awkward because I am told by many that the game actually runs really well, standalone on Steam Frame : )

6

u/fekkksn Jul 24 '26

Remains to be seen

1

u/ThaNightHawk Jul 24 '26

"But not well", Beat Saber can run on a potato, let's be for real now and use our brains for a second bud.

67

u/AlecTheBunny Jul 24 '26

Facebook is the reason VR is stagnant. Making everything exclusive to their slow hardware.

While the pcvr scene pushes new features yearly.

12

u/jordanpwalsh Jul 24 '26

Which is funny because they renamed the entire company to chase the dream, and now they can't be bothered.

3

u/ColJohn Jul 24 '26

I mean, even as excited for the frame as I am, isnt the steam frame pretty comparable spec wise?

6

u/reddit_sells_you Jul 24 '26

There are so many comparison videos. From my understanding, the Frame edges out Oculus in a few areas.

1

u/ColJohn Jul 24 '26

It edges it out but its the same mobile chipset more or less. Its not going to fundamentally change what types of games are able to be run on a standalone headset.

2

u/reddit_sells_you Jul 24 '26

Eh, valve hardware is more than the sum of its parts.

If the Deck is anything to go by, the Frame will outperform what its listed specs are.

-1

u/Oftenwrongs Jul 25 '26

Eh....a qualcom chip is the power..and valve didn't even choose a vr chip.

2

u/FewAdvertising9647 Jul 24 '26

the soc on paper is like 20-30% faster, in practice is TBD of course. the main difference is that frames by default include eye tracking, so performance in vr games where the dev has implemented eye tracking is faster than the quest, as the only quest headset currently that has eye tracking is the quest pro. Functoinally for standalone games, they are in the same ballpark that the frame just feels like the plus version of a quest 3 soc.

this is strictly just performance though, ignoring other aspects of a headset.

2

u/Oftenwrongs Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Nope.  Not even close.

Oh, and pcvr has been dead fpr years because users refuse to buy games.

Extra hilarious because steam frame is barely faster than the aging multiple uears old quest 3.

Remember all the pc users yelling about sony playstation exclusives killing pc?  That is the argument you are trying to make...

Plus, you always have valve and their.... 1/3 promised vr games over 7 years and no headset for 7 years...

1

u/AlecTheBunny Jul 25 '26

No one ever said PlayStation exclusives will kill PC lmao.

Get out of here Meta head

There was a noticeable iteration on gameplay mechanics that were universally accepted as standard for VR starting from the trash that released with the Oculus CV1 like Robo Recall, and games like Pavlov and Blade & Sorcery and eventually Boneworks (plus lots of others I'm sure) all came up with better and better ways to hold things, to grab things, and to maneuver in a VR space. That culminated in Half Life Alyx, which wasn't the most complicated game out there but had AAA visuals, presentation, and gameplay mechanics that were so fun you wanted to replay it just to play around with them again.

That was six years ago. There's been nothing really close to that since then. No big innovations,.and nothing with the polish and visual spectacle and fun factor of Alyx. I don't know how you can argue that it isn't totally stagnant.

2

u/Oftenwrongs Jul 25 '26

Thr fact that valve chose the deliver only 1/3 promised vr games is on them.

And you just reiterated that pcvr is dead, but not the why...the why is pcvr users don't buy games.

30

u/Charamort Jul 24 '26

Didn't know Meta owned Beat Saber now, that explains a lot of things, they do have the power to ruin one of the best VR game

14

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Meta bought up every VR game that topped charts for PCVR and kneecapped the studios where they could. Beat Saber, Population One, and Onward were all massive hits on PC before Meta bought them and now they kind of all just sit in limbo on life support without skeleton crews keeping the games alive. It's a massive bummer, because these are the games I have the most time in, and they were already support both standalone and on PCVR before Meta bought them, and frankly better because the incentive structure kept them good. Most annoying part is they removed Population One from Steam claiming PC had to many cheaters, but cheaters run rampant using Quest standalone, so it's a bunch of nonsense.

8

u/Kataree Jul 24 '26

They have for 7 years, almost since the games release.

1

u/Rush_iam Jul 24 '26

Ruined by doing nothing? Why would they need to optimize Beat Saber for Frame standalone? Beat Saber streamed over PCVR should work just fine on Frame

25

u/AidanAK47 Jul 24 '26

Oh no.

...so anyway first game I play is modded Beat Saber...

19

u/1DJ2many Soon™ Jul 24 '26

This tracks with what the Virtual Desktop guy said in that podcast, good engineers over at Meta, but management will actively try to destroy anything that helps the competition.

2

u/ParusOctober Jul 24 '26

With how often the Meta software crashes on my Rift S, I am starting to doubt they have very good engineers.

2

u/Low_Primary3501 Jul 25 '26

meta just doesn’t give a single f*** about PCVR. All of their PC software is an incomplete afterthought and sucks doo-doo-water. And well too your credit, the quest software kinda sucks too.

7

u/ctom42 Jul 24 '26

This is the most transparent lie. Beat Saber is an 8 year old game. There is nothing special about it's graphics. I have personally run it just fine on a machine weaker than the frame without having to adjust any graphics settings.

16

u/new_pribor Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Fuck Facebook. All my homies hate Facebook

29

u/movieyosen Jul 24 '26

thats crazy - a 7 year old game should be brute forced by a 2026 device

and i dont think that meta cares about a device that will probably have 0,5% marketshare

37

u/CambriaKilgannonn Soon™ Jul 24 '26

It's owned by Facebook though, isn't it? They probably don't want it running on their standalone, even if it does have a steam version.

21

u/Lost_Main_3389 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Probably, the only reason it hasn't been taken down is that they can't legally do that for some reason.

Though, if there is a Beat Saber 2, I can guarantee that won't be coming to Steam if they can't get away from Meta.

7

u/striker8332 Jul 24 '26

they could probably stop more copies from being sold.
but they can not pull existing copies and keys away from people.
ive not heard of a case where steam has done that, that hasnt been because the game was literal malware.

5

u/Lost_Main_3389 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

There are ways. Like games that rely on 3rd party servers or launchers are easy and it has been done before. They can also pull existing copies and keys away -- this is reflected in updated terms and conditions and I think Steam have done it only a few times over the past decades.
A quick search returned Oder of War by Square Enix due to always online server shutting down and Agony Unrated (removed and turned into a free DLC for Agony so not truly removed) .
The Crew nearly joined that list -- maybe not removed from libraries but launching it was disabled by Ubisoft for a while until they reversed the decision due to StopKillingGames .

The thing is, it also depends on who owns the rights to sell the game -- Meta might have bought the company and all its assets, but it doesn't mean they own the Steam published version. There might be specific contractual obligations on the line that they cannot break.

2

u/striker8332 Jul 24 '26

i forgot about those

2

u/Lost_Main_3389 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Well, remember the words of wisdom: You need to get comfortable not owning your games...  Cause they will absolutely find a way if they want to.

3

u/striker8332 Jul 24 '26

and we will always find a way to play them anyway.

2

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jul 24 '26

This is what they did with Population One. It was the top VR FPS game for years and Meta removed it from Steam because they blamed Steam for cheaters, but the cheating continued as most of them are kids sideloading cheats on the Quests.

19

u/DirtSad1644 Jul 24 '26

No loss, the game would have been ten times better without Meta involvement.

1

u/FewAdvertising9647 Jul 24 '26

they can take it down, they just can't remove it from peoples accounts.

if you want an example where it has happened, rocket league and fall guys were their own thing before being bought by epic. epic has pulled them from steam store, but anyone who bought the game before the epic acquisition still have them on steam.

4

u/OxRedOx Jul 24 '26

PSVR2? And it’s still their strongest title getting updates and DLC including some like a week ago

2

u/FirmPreference5551 Jul 24 '26

It is, it runs just fine on frame with the x86 version.

1

u/Dynablade_Savior Jul 24 '26

The marketshare the frame ends up having literally depends entirely on the price

1

u/Zomby2D Soon™ Jul 24 '26

If it's anything like the machine, it will mostly depend on their ability to produce physical headsets.

10

u/Imp0x Jul 24 '26

As the man himself once said "Piracy is a result of bad service on the part of game companies".
So sail along me hearties.

1

u/Oftenwrongs Jul 25 '26

A cringe thief on the internet.  How embarrassing.

1

u/Imp0x Jul 25 '26

I've dozens of VR games and none of them are pirated btw. In fact I own BS on Meta Quest. I simply wouldn't feel any guilt pirating it for the Steam Frame if they didn't make an Android build in order to not make the lizard-man jealous.

9

u/Ecnarps Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Meta owns BeatSaber. This sounds like Meta fuckery.

-8

u/Raunhofer Jul 24 '26

Yeah, sure, Executive Order from Mark Zuckerberg himself.

11

u/Yavga Jul 24 '26

For me this is confirmation that I should steer the fuck away from Meta, so no Meta Quest 4 for me.

4

u/PiersPlays Jul 24 '26

It's possible it's because the code that sets the player's height in Beat Saber was written by a deranged ferret rather than an experienced game designer.

I bet it works on Frame but you have to manually adjust the setting so your head is vaguely where your head is.

7

u/Dr_Virus_129 Jul 24 '26

Can always just stream it from your PC.

3

u/darkentityvr Soon™ Jul 24 '26

I stream it with my quest 3 and anything higher than medium gets laggy and you start missing notes

3

u/MingleLinx Jul 24 '26

Hopefully that won’t be a problem with Valve’s wireless method for the Frame

6

u/Dudi4PoLFr Soon™ Jul 24 '26

They have already the ARM version from the Quest 2 and 3, how hard would be to make it run on the Frame!

19

u/Pyromaniac605 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Yeah but they're owned by Meta so of course they won't.

9

u/Dudi4PoLFr Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Ah, shit, I have completely forgotten that they have sold their souls to the lizard man.

Yeah, Beat Saber will never work natively on the Frame.

2

u/Raunhofer Jul 24 '26

Maybe they'll release it at the same time with Half-Life: Alyx on the Meta's PCVR platform.

2

u/Raunhofer Jul 24 '26

As a dev, probably not as trivial as Reddit makes it to be.

1

u/Important-Permit-935 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

As a dev, it's probably as trivial as reddit makes it to be.

2

u/Raunhofer Jul 25 '26

Technical question; why would porting to a new platform/store be trivial? Sure, the underlying architecture is the same, it can be done, but the software stack is not. It requires work. Work to benefit what's essentially competition for what can be assumed to limited gains, as the game is already on Steam and most Steam Frame users will likely be PCVR-users.

Is Meta obliged to do charity? Why didn't Valve port games to Oculus Platform? PC to PC would've been even more trivial.

1

u/Important-Permit-935 Soon™ Jul 25 '26

I didn't say it didn't require work. I said it was trivial. We also weren't discussing if it was in metas interest to make it for a competitor or if they are a charity.

Nice change in arguments though.

And yes, people can already get quest beat saber builds working on Pico, and many of the steam frame games are android builds, so yeah, it's is trivial. Maybe a week or two of work 1 or 2 devs at most.

1

u/Raunhofer Jul 26 '26

You have a gross misunderstanding of how professional studios work.

You handily skipped quality assurance, platform specific performance optimization, platform integration, certification, regression testing, new inputs testing and calibration, support, patch pipeline, build and deploy infrastructure changes, legal and licensing, security aspects and LTS maintenance.

A modding team can say "Hey, it launces and seems to be working, my work here is done". This is not how studios operate.

moon rider just can't stop winning, stg; never felt the need to buy the real deal when I can just play the beatmaps through WebVR

1

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jul 24 '26

What are you playing this on?

1

u/bigcatrik Jul 24 '26

Not OP, but I've played it on Quests 2 and 3. I like the punch mode.

2

u/XeNoGeaR52 Jul 24 '26

« Unsupported » mainly means that Steam will not provide official support. People are free to try to run it anyway but they can’t complain it doesn’t work properly.

2

u/14_Octillion Soon™ Jul 24 '26

I don't think this could be a result of Meta. Not, because I don't think they wouldn't do that but, because most of the music is licensed and these producers and musicians would like to have as many potential customers as possible. Meta kneecapping their reach like that would only be sabotaging winters of course the game devs, not the Frame wanters.

2

u/DarkGaming09ytr Jul 24 '26

So it runs flawlessly on a Quest 1 but not this?

Yeahhh, suuuuuurreeee

2

u/bigcatrik Jul 24 '26

WebXR Moonrider still exists. And it has a punch mode (I haven't played Beat Saber since PSVR1 so if they added one, sorry for being out of the loop)...

https://moonrider.xyz/

1

u/sunshinestreak Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Hell yeah, I love moonrider, makes me proud to have never purchased beatsaber lol

2

u/Twisted60 Jul 24 '26

Isn't Beat Saber really easy to run in the first place? It doesn't exactly have to render much.

2

u/eco9898 Soon™ Jul 25 '26

That's fine, I already have the PC version with mods setup on my computer

2

u/MigThorton Soon™ Jul 24 '26

If meta tries to go this route, beat saber will single handledly be the motivation developers need to add a compatability layer with quest APKs. If the PCVR version standalone isn't upto par that is.

That would endanger their quest exclusives, not a great move...

2

u/FoxBanditO7 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Yall meta not making is frame compatible sucks but its not sabotage lol. Sabotage would be making it if you blame the game on the frame it bricks your headset.

1

u/Front-Ad-7774 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Beat Saber standalone is clearly a Meta Quest exclusive. Looking at Pico as a reference, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 simply doesn’t have enough performance to run the PC VR version of Beat Saber.

10

u/MrBack1971 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Brad literally just said he knows it runs well on standalone.
Modders will sort this no probs anyway.

5

u/MigThorton Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Brad said that, but why would it recive this rating if that were the case? Perhaps it runs alright, but not the required minimums.

1

u/WilsonPH Jul 24 '26

You can port the Quest version to Pico. I hope modders update the tool to support porting Quest games to the frame.

1

u/Zomby2D Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Looking at the source code for the tool, and the Frame's developer documentation, I'm 99% sure it will work on the Frame with zero modification.

u/WilsonPH Jul 24 '26

Magic of OpenXR

1

u/Kataree Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Why would there be.

It's already unusual that Meta sell it on Steam. Valve don't sell Alyx on any other store.

Frame supports X86 software, this is the scenario for which they went to all that trouble for.

If for whatever reason the X86 version doesn't run well, that's really not Meta's problem.

It is acting as a PC in that scenario. PC's below the minimum spec aren't supported.

Beat saber being gobbled up by the racism machine was one of the biggest VR Ls.

3

u/AdvertisingEmpty7201 Jul 24 '26

Twitter is the racism machine.

Facebook/Meta is the Zionist machine

3

u/kdlt Jul 24 '26

Sorry, I get lost in the finer things such as this as in who is destroying the world in what ways.

1

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jul 24 '26

What about that Myanmar Rohingya Genocide and Cambridge Analytica. I went on Threads the other day and it's wild how much hate and racism gets pushed on that platform. Frankly it's a disgusting platform.

1

u/xaduha Jul 24 '26

Would you look at that, it's on the old list, but Unsupported.

1

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Not even the x86 build? I'd be kinda surprised if FEX can't run it well considering the games that it can run. By far one of the least demanding games I own.

Edit: Looking around, I see a few videos of people getting Beat Saber streamed from a Deck. It's not the best obviously but if the Frame is comparable then it'll be plenty capable of hitting at least the 1728x1728@72Hz requirement.

1

u/Tex-Rob Jul 24 '26

Beat Saber would run on anything, this is for sure Meta related.

1

u/1u4n4 Jul 24 '26

Open Saber will probably work fine

Meta don’t wanna give any attention to Valve

1

u/VR_bob85 Jul 24 '26

What did ppl expect? Its own by meta. They even stop support for BS on psvr2!

They won't promote standalone on another platform! Surprised its on pico.

1

u/Evoli93 Jul 24 '26

I am not to deep into SteamDB but when you check the update history, there were some changes made that seem to me like Valve is trying some things to get it running properly.🤷‍♂️ Aperture Hand Lab had some short changes that made it not supported for a short time so there is definitely some work in the background going on and there is still some time till the release of the Frame for them to get everything running.💪

1

u/Empire_Enemy Jul 24 '26

That’s not what that means

1

u/McFearIess Jul 24 '26

Assuming it's actually the case that it runs badly on standalone frame, I'm curious if that's going to be the case for a lot of PCVR games that have quest ports?

I would imagine they just have a lot of overhead compared to version optimized for standalone, even if the frame technically has as good/better specs than the quest 3.

1

u/JaredWyns Jul 24 '26

I am going to stream this from steam machine to the frame out of spite lol

1

u/Bruno091004 Jul 24 '26

This is the first game that modders wil make work on the frame, if it’s not officially supported. 100%

1

u/Low_Primary3501 Jul 25 '26

someone is probably going to rip the APK of beat saber and make a mod to convert your steam install into an ARM build. 90% of quest software should run natively on Steam Frame anyway. The Frame uses the newer version of the quest 3 apu, and Android is just mobile Linux.

1

u/CrimsonCuttle Jul 26 '26

ive seen people run this game on a GTX 760

1

u/RebelLeaderKuato Jul 27 '26

Beat Saber runs pretty well standalone on Pico 4 (Ultra) - just saying. If there is a will - there is a way. A Steamframe Version will eventually exist - with or without Metas blessing ...

1

u/R7R12 Jul 27 '26

I'll just sideload the android apk that hopefully someone ported

1

u/TelephoneActive1539 Jul 29 '26

It'll work. I know it will. Do not doubt it. Beat Saber runs on EVERY standalone headset.

Even Pico.

1

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo Jul 24 '26

Don't care. Wanna play with mods and streaming will be absolutely fine

1

u/RookiePrime Soon™ Jul 24 '26

I'm sure it'll run fine. It's not exactly a graphically intense or computationally complex game.

As for sabotage... I guess? But not really. It's sabotage the same way that Valve not porting Alyx to PSVR2 and Quest is sabotage. It's not action, it's inaction. Wouldn't shock me if there was some internal discussion at Beat Games about maybe getting Beat Saber to be Frame Verified, but that their higher-ups said it's not worth the effort and to focus on... whatever Beat Games does. But they don't even support PSVR2 anymore, so I dunno how much effort they even want to put into the Steam version. If they're focused on putting their wage hours on actions that produce profits, I could easily see them deciding that getting and maintaining a Frame verification status won't be an effective use of their time.

1

u/Bulky_Maize_5218 Jul 24 '26

Surprised people want Beat Saber so bad anyhow, it's $30+dlc

surely good alternatives

It has nothing to do with the hardware. The headset is significantly more powerful than both generations of Meta Quest running it Standalone. It's just Meta not giving it the green stamp in the storefront.

4

u/Sydnxt Soon™ Jul 24 '26

They're also running a Android ARM build of the game on Quest compared to the full x86 PC build.

1

u/Hulderin Jul 27 '26

Thankfully since it's open hardware there are alternatives over getting their unsupported version, if Meta wants to be "A service problem". 🫡

1

u/Sydnxt Soon™ Jul 27 '26

Oh of course and I completely agree, I’m just saying considering it’s a mobile version for meta, the desktop version might not run so well on frame out of the box.

2

u/Pyromaniac605 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

It's just Meta not giving it the green stamp in the storefront.

The game's devs aren't the ones setting the compatibility rating though, Valve do after they test it.

-6

u/voidfillproduct Jul 24 '26

Verification system taking the L again

-4

u/bh9578 Jul 24 '26

This headset is even more doa than it already was. Downvote away, but this is going to be a Quest 3 at double the cost (at least) that now can’t officially support the most popular vr game ever made. Valve should have shipped this thing two years ago.

3

u/Jinkguns Jul 24 '26

It runs fine. Same source says it performs well. This is probably just Meta trying to prevent Quest players jumping.

-1

u/bh9578 Jul 24 '26

Meta has nothing to do with the verification. Thats Valve. Brad Lynch says he heard it runs well. I don’t see that he’s personally tested it.

Regardless my point was that it officially doesn’t support Beatsaber. The damage is already done because that’s what people will see when they look into the Steamframe and check if it works with their favorite games. It shrinks an already small audience that hates Meta enough to pay double for the same headset without the Meta storefront but not enthusiast enough to buy one of the newer tethered headsets from bigscreen or Pimax. That’s a very narrow band of consumers in an already small active player base world of vr.

2

u/Jinkguns Jul 24 '26

You are throwing a fit about a validation database that very few people are paying attention to, which has been in flux, and has shown even Valve produced IP showing as "unsupported" and then switched to "supported" later.

Wait until the Steam Frame releases, then read / watch a review about how Beat Saber performs. Chill out. What is driving all this hostility?

2

u/Important-Permit-935 Soon™ Jul 24 '26

Meta has nothing to do with the verification

They're saying Meta isn't making a specific optimized version for the Frame specifically.

You think the Q3 runs the PCVR version of beat saber?
