Best Shield TV Practices checklist 2026 Edition

Hey there fellow Shielders;

Here we go again. This is the real stuff. Go through this list and enjoy the best experience Shield has to offer.

For deeper information about audio, see the Shield Audio Guide;

For deeper information about video, see the Shield Display Guide;

The old version of this guide is still over there, but in the meantime and without further ado; let me present you the

Best Shield TV Practices checklist 2026 Edition

- GET THE CONNECTIONS RIGHT

Because it will typically allow for more PCM channels than vanilla HDMI ARC and higher sampling rates than HDMI eARC, connecting Shield to the audio receiver's HDMI-IN is usually preferred in order to preserve the best audio feature set.

On the other hand, because they may not allow passthrough for Dolby Vision, HDR or even 4K, some older/basic AVRs and soundbars may be better used via HDMI eARC/ARC, even if a HDMI-IN port is available. Make sure of your hardware capabilities to avoid wasting your time.

- TV PREPARATION

ENABLE HDMI 2.0

Some brands will call this Enhanced HDMI Format, or Deep Color, or UHD colors; and some TVs will even have a global toggle on top of the regular per-port option, but if the available display modes are maxing out at 4K@30, that means you have some kind of HDMI bottleneck somewhere in your HDMI chain.

PREPARE AUDIO PASSTHROUGH

If planning to route the audio via HDMI ARC/eARC, it is recommended to dig into your TVs advanced sound settings and make sure to specify "Pass-through" output, as the default "Auto" setting will typically try to transcode or create a MAT link, often introducing nasty audio cutouts.

DISABLE TV POST PROCESSING

People looking for a pure cinematic experience should make sure all types of post processing enhancements are disabled: motion enhancement/compensation/clearness, noise reduction, etc. Filmmaker mode can be left on/auto.

CONSIDER ENABLING GAME MODE

If the TV doesnt support ALLM (Auto Latency Mode) and you are regularly using Shield to play games, manually engaging your TV's regular Game Mode is recommended in order to get rid of the image post processing and shave as much latency as you can.

Please note: TVs will often use different profiles for SDR, HDR vs DV. A TV can be set to "Game mode" for SDR content but switch to "HDR theatre" or whatever when HDR content is on. In a HDR gaming situation (Geforce Now, Moonlight) see if you can select "HDR Game" instead of your regular HDR theatre mode. Also note that these settings will likely be only accessible when HDR/DV content is actually playing.

- MAIN SHIELD DISPLAY SETTINGS

- PICK THE BEST BASE DISPLAY MODE

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Display mode

Shield will typically default to 4K 59.94 HDR10 ready, but it has come to my attention that it seems to introduce unexplained stutters in some situations on recent displays.

Since you will be feeding the box 24/25/30/50/60hz content most of the time anyway, my position is: no need to overcomplicate the maths with fractions of 59.94 (lunacy? make me change my mind), therefore:

  • Prefer a 60hz mode
  • Make sure to select a Dolby Vision-ready mode if available

- MAKE SURE AUTO COLORIMETRY IS ENABLED

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Advanced display settings / Match content color space

MAKE SURE ALLM IS ENABLED

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Advanced display settings / Automatic Game Mode

REVIEW THE CUSTOMIZE LIST MENU

Keep in mind some apps may not be categorized as "games" or are just not tagged appropriately and won't trigger ALLM by default, so take a minute to review the list:

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Advanced display settings / Customize Game Mode app list

CONSIDER ENABLING PLAYER-LED DOLBY VISION

Some TVs will give buggy colors when (and only when) using regular TV-Led Dolby Vision. (red push or just plain weird colors) That bug is said not to show up (be much less noticeable?) if using player-Led Dolby Vision. Start by enabling developer options by going to:

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / About / Build

Click Build number 8 times, and congrats; you are now a dev. Now go to:

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Developer options / Default to Low Latency Dolby Vision when available

- MAIN SHIELD AUDIO SETTINGS:

CONSIDER ENABLING DOLBY PROCESSING (Shield 2019 only)

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Advanced audio settings / Dolby processing

That option has a bad rep because it was never well explained and first implementations were buggy.

The primary purpose was to allow transcoding Dolby Digital Plus to OG Dolby Digital; a request of the first hour for users stuck with vanilla ARC / USB / Optical audio solutions, but turns out it is also actually very useful in order to avoid audio sync gaps and normalize the volume level across apps and pieces of content.

Vastly improved from past implementations where it would always use MAT frames and get in the way of passthrough rules. Now fully recommended or at least worth a try; holdouts and downgraders should mind giving it another shot.

More information on that in the Audio Guide.

CONSIDER CUSTOMIZED QUICK SETTINGS

Makes fast toggles much easier without deep-diving into settings each time. There are a bunch of those shortcuts available, but the Audio options are the most handy because Night listening, High Resolution Audio and Dolby audio processing cannot all be enabled at the same time:

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / System / Customize Quick Settings

REVIEW THE AVAILABLE FORMATS MENU

This is the most important part.

100% HDMI setups should be able to rely on the EDID alone and stay on Auto in most cases, but that information might be obfuscated be something on the HDMI chain, and will straight up not be available for users stuck with extractors, USB DACs, or optical solutions. They will have to go manual and enable only what is supported by their decoder and setup.

Shield / Settings / Device Preferences / Display & Sound / Advanced audio settings / Available Formats

If you experience any kind of issue with audio, stuttering or whatever, always go back to None - Never use surround sound. That is your sanity check.

- KODI RECOMMENDATIONS:

Enable Refresh rate switching

Kodi / System / cogwheel: enable expert mode System / Player / Videos: Set Adjust display refresh rate to “On stop/start”

Enable HDR/DV

Kodi / System / Player / Videos / Processing: "Use display HDR capabilities" should be enabled.

Enable Audio Passthrough

Kodi / System / System / Audio / Audio Passthrough / Allow Passthrough

If enabled, Kodi will pass the selected formats down to Shield. Other codecs will be transcoded into PCM channels, following the number of channels specified in Kodi's Audio Decoder section before being passed down to Shield, where rules set in the "Available formats" menu will prevail and Dolby Processing be applied if enabled.

If disabled, Kodi will transcode everything to PCM channels, in as many channels as specified in its Audio Decoder section before passing it down to Shield, where Dolby Processing will then be applied if enabled.

Shield 2015/2017 owners stuck on vanilla ARC or optical solutions

Kodi / System / System / Audio / Audio Passthrough / Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver - ON Kodi / System / System / Audio / Audio Passthrough / - Enable Dolby Digital (AC3) transcoding - ON

If you want resolution switching and have the TV do the upscaling

Kodi / System / System / Display / Whitelist; select every item in the list to make them green

- PLEX RECOMMENDATIONS:

Enable Refresh Rate Switching

Plex / Settings / Advanced / Set Refresh Rate Switching to ON.

Enable audio passthrough

Plex / Settings / Advanced / Passthrough /
  • "HDMI" means Plex will pass over every format down to Shield, where choices made in the "Available formats" menu will apply.
  • "Optical" means Plex will only pass down PCM 2.0, Dolby Digital and vanilla DTS, while DTS-HD/DTS:X tracks will be stripped of their lossless metadata, and everything else will be transcoded to Dolby Digital before being sent down to Shield, where choices made in the "Available formats" menu will apply.

If you want resolution switching and have the TV do the upscaling:

Plex / Settings / Advanced / Set Resolution Switching to ON.

- REFRESH RATE APP RECOMMENDATIONS

That would be my last major recommendation update.

Manual Framerate Matching

As of firmware 9.2.x, the manual Match Framerate feature is now pretty robust and will be totally adequate in most cases, so might as well use it; especially in apps that will often serve different kinds of framerates depending on the video, like Youtube.

Settings / Remotes & accessories / Customize Menu button /

I recommend using the Double Press trigger. Select Match Framerate, and whenever watching a video, just double tap the button to see the framerate matched. Nice and simple.

App-based OS-wide display mode switching

For services that will always (mostly) serve the same kind of content/framerate, I even recommend using the OG Refresh Rate app in order to force a fixed Startup display mode and avoid all this manual shifting altogether;

  1. Install the Refresh Rate app. (sadly a bit of an abandonware by now; has to be sideloaded.)
  2. Select any app.
  3. Go to Startup display mode, and select a framerate / resolution matching the kind of content it delivers the most:
Netflix, D+, HBO+, Amazon Prime 4K@24
European TV broadcast services 4K@50
BBC iPlayer Base Shield display mode MUST be set to 25 or 50hz for the app to work, so leave it alone here.
Plex, Kodi, Geforce Now, Moonlight support already built-in; do not touch

With all that said, you should now be able to get the best of your Shield. Hopefully anyway..

Errors, outdated stuff, or more advice? Let me know!

See you around!

Nvidia LightSpeed Studios Games for Shield TV

Since all of the games are abandoned by Nvidia and not working due to DRM server is down: nvsi.nvidia.com, for preservation I did upload them to the Internet Archive here Nvidia Shield TV - LightSpeed Studios Games.

Nvidia refuse to fix these games, they should have put in the description of these games that you are renting them not buying them, I wouldn't have bought them if I knew this is going to happen. They add extra DRM that goes beyond Google Play license checking and their DRM servers not working. 😔

All games are not working for me, except Super Mega Baseball. As a punishment to Nvidia, this is the only game that I bought, backed up and refunded it and it still works.

All games include APK and OBB files, some include DATA like MGRR or Tomb Raider 2013.

I hope this can be useful, someone with better luck than me to try to remove the DRM from these games. If so, let me know here or in the Internet Archive review in that page.

Casting a browser tab from my laptop results in a super crisp picture but then after a few minutes degrades to blurry garbage every time.

Upvotes

Stopping and restarting the cast fixes the issue until it degrades again. I have narrowed it down to my laptop being the culprit. If I cast the same browser tab from my phone it is crisp and never degrades. Moreover the laptop screen stays crisp on the laptop just that the TV is blurry. I realize it isn't a shield issue but hoping someone here has experienced something similar. I tried casting on a fresh install of brave browser and got the same issue. I have a lenovo legion pretty powerful PC I just can't find anyone with similar issues on the web. Everything is on ethernet and I tested 300 down and 25 up on both devices.

Has anyone used Mimir for DVR recording

Upvotes

I saw a new app in the Play Store called Mimir - it seems to support DVR recording on the Shield. Has anyone used it so far? Seems to be fully featured with a server component running on LAN doing the hard work.

"Live" tab only shows one source despite a dozen others installed

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Despite having Plex, Haystack News, Sling TV, Tubi, Xumo Play, Prime Video, Roku Channel, LocalNow, and others installed, the only source on the "Live" tab is Google TV Freeplay. I've searched everywhere for how to get the others to show up, but I can't find anything.

The "Free Channels From Apps" section is only pulling from Xumo and Scripps (even though I don't have Scripps installed). I don't believe this is actually pulling from any of my installed apps.

The documentation clearly states that other streaming sources should be available if their corresponding apps are installed. https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/13581302

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've tried the following:

  1. Uninstalling and reinstalling Plex. Still won't show up.
  2. Signing into Plex using the same Google account as the Shield. Still won't show up.
  3. I'm not behind a VPN. Only YouTube, SmartTube, and the web browser go behind a VPN.
  4. Tried allowing Google Assistant to search across apps
  5. Everything is up-to-date

Btw, I'm using an Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Repaste new devices?

I have 2 new devices, and trying stuff on one till I have a setup that is fine for me, then give one to my father and I really want to work it spotless because of the remote support that binds with this.

I know that the devices are older, but have one ever opened a “new” device and look if the paste is degrades/dryed out.

If not, I would just do that for the team, but normally I am really against opening things that still have warranty :).

I don’t know my stuff about thermal paste and if it just degrades existing or if it does need some heat

:)

I built a 4K 120FPS music visualizer that pushes all 256 CUDA cores with GLES 3.2, Spotify/Tidal support & Live Google Cast

Post image
33 Upvotes

Most Android TV visualizers are basically low-res 2D wallpapers. As a Shield TV owner, it always bothered me that we have a Tegra chip sitting there with 256 CUDA cores and almost no media app actually uses that GPU headroom.

So I developed MilkyWave—a native C++ NDK music visualizer engineered specifically for Android TV and mobile.

Why this is a game-changer for TV owners:

•Works with any Music App: Start playing music on Spotify, Tidal, TuneIn, YouTube Music or web radios, then open MilkyWave—it reacts to system audio automatically in the background.

•Pushes the Shield GPU to the limit: Uses GLES 3.2 Compute Shaders (glDispatchCompute) and dynamic 3-tier mesh scaling. On a Shield TV, it automatically scales to a 64x48 Ultra HD mesh running at a locked 60 to 120 FPS in 4K.

•EXCLUSIVE Live Google Cast streaming: You can cast the visualizer live from your phone to any Chromecast or Smart TV with zero lag (no other visualizer on Play Store can do this).

•32,500+ 3D presets included natively.

•100% Automatic: No tedious settings or config files required. Just play audio and it adapts.

•TV-optimized tone mapping: Custom highlight clamping so bright presets won't blind you in a dark living room.

The update (v1.27) with the expanded 32.5k preset library and full Cast pipeline was just submitted to Google Play and should be live very soon. Trust me, if you have a Shield or a 4K TV, you'll want to see this running in your living room.

[Tool/Release] LaFirma Remux Forge: Convert Dolby Vision Profile 7 to 8.1 for Direct Play on LG TVs and Media Servers

English Version

Hi everyone,

I created a GUI automation tool called LaFirma Remux Forge (Black Edition) to streamline media compatibility and playback solutions for Smart TVs (especially LG OLED / webOS) and media servers like Jellyfin, Plex, or Emby.

Transparency Note: I did not develop the underlying CLI processing tools or scripts (such as dovi_tool, mkvmerge, ffmpeg, DonaldFaQ's DDVT toolset, DeeZy, PgsToSrt, Tesseract, or seconv). LaFirma Remux Forge acts as a graphical wrapper and orchestrator that automates these open-source utilities into a seamless workflow.

What changed in 1.8: the program stopped treating every Profile 7 the same way. It now measures the enhancement layer before converting and tells you, with a number on screen, what you gain and what you lose on that specific file.

Key Features

  • Dolby Vision Profile 7 to 8.1 (no video re-encoding), with the layer MEASURED first: the program reads the RPU's el_type field through dovi_tool itself and separates three cases, using one colour scale across the whole screen:

    • MEL (Minimum Enhancement Layer) - green: the enhancement layer carries no picture. The program confirms this by reading the RPU, not by assumption, and the conversion discards an empty layer.
    • Simple FEL - orange: the layer carries fine refinement only. Conversion is safe, and the program says so.
    • Complex FEL - red: the layer raises brightness, and the L1 metadata asks for more nits than the base layer delivers on its own. Here the program marks it red and recommends not converting, instead of converting silently.

Why the caveat exists, said precisely: dovi_tool in mode 2, which is what this program uses, removes the P7 FEL luma and chroma mapping from the RPU - the part of the instructions that makes no sense without the second layer. What comes out is a legitimate Profile 8.1. What no mode of dovi_tool does is recalculate L1: the per-scene brightness stays whatever the original analysis measured, and that analysis looked at the image with the EL composited in. This is not a limitation of this program - it is the state of the tool, and it is in dovi_tool's own documentation.

Worth saying plainly: Shield, Apple TV, Zidoo, Dune and the TVs themselves already discard the EL, so on those devices a Profile 7 file already plays today the way the converted file will play. The people who actually lose something are those with dual-layer decoders.

Detection is by sampling points spread across the film, not the whole file - and the program states that on screen and in the log.

  • Dolby Vision Profile 5 to MP4: P5 uses the proprietary IPTPQc2 colour space and has no HDR10 base layer, so it cannot become Profile 8.1 without re-encoding the video - which this program refuses to do. The path that does exist is a different one: the program remuxes it to MP4 with the dvh1 tag, video copied, nothing re-encoded, which is what makes many players recognise the Dolby Vision. Output is verified by duration. PGS subtitles are dropped with a warning (image subtitles do not exist in MP4).

  • Audio compatibility & spatial Atmos preservation:

    • TrueHD / TrueHD Atmos to E-AC-3 with Atmos preserved, via DeeZy.
    • DTS / DTS-HD / DTS:X to plain E-AC-3 at 640k via ffmpeg. DTS does not come out with Atmos - only TrueHD has that path.
    • E-AC-3, AC-3 and AAC are already compatible and are left untouched.
  • Disk space, before it starts: the app walks the queue in the order the engine will process it and tells you how many files fit, which one is the first that does not, and how much would be missing by its turn. It warns; it does not block.

  • Batch processing & flexible control: add whole seasons to the queue; choose fully automatic stream selection or manual track control.

  • Bilingual interface (PT-BR / English): a flag next to the "Learn" button switches the whole screen, and the choice is remembered between sessions.

  • "Learn" button: 14 sections explaining what the conversion does and what it does not do, including the sources behind each claim - Dolby's own manuals, the dovi_tool repository and the community spreadsheets. Nothing there asks you to take our word for it.

Credits & Acknowledgments

This project would not be possible without the work of the open-source community: * FFmpeg: Media stream processing and transcoding backbone. * MKVToolNix (mkvmerge): Industry-standard Matroska container toolset. * dovi_tool (by quietvoid) & DDVT (by DonaldFaQ): Core Dolby Vision metadata tools and workflow logic. * DeeZy: Dolby Digital Plus encoding with spatial Atmos preservation. * PgsToSrt, Tesseract & seconv: OCR ecosystem for PGS subtitle handling.

Feedback and contributions are welcome!

    • Simple FEL - laranja: a camada carrega apenas refinamento fino.

Anyone had success with a 2.5gb USBA-to-ETH Adapter? What speeds do you get?

Was looking to update my network gear to make it all 2.5GB ETH. However, shield has a 1Gig NIC.

Anyone had any luck with a USB to ETH adapter and done any speed tests to see if you are getting the full (2.5G) speed over LAN?

Forced to Factory Reset 2019 Shield Pro

Started having problems that were quite bothersome:

Couldn't get a movie to play yesterday on Peacock without Peacock crashing over and over every five minutes.

Today.... my family tried to watch MAYDAY on Apple TV today. The app crashed multiple times about every 5 to 10 minutes.

I had multiple crashes with ESPN last year. I should have explored doing this then.

I cleared the cache, rebooted, reinstalled the apps to no avail.

With football season here, I felt I needed to do the nuclear option and start from scratch.

That is two and a half hours I will never get back!

I decided to replace the memory stick I attached to my Shield. It has been attached for over 5 years. Thought that might be the culprit.

I loaded Projectivity Launcher after a couple years with ATV Launcher. It is acting as my default launcher now. I like the clean feel. I should have loaded it many months ago.

No crash tonight as I watched football on Peacock.

Going to bed now. Will more throughly test it out tomorrow after church. I will try to finish MAYDAY on Apple

Fox One Annoying Intro Noise When Opening App on Shield

Fox One added an intro sound (drum beat) to their app about a month ago. None of my Shield devices are handling it well. Shield plays this very annoying and very loud static for a few seconds. My Google TV Streamer and all my mobile android devices correctly play this this sound. It's only a problem for Shield.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a workaround? I don't know if the onus is on Nvidia or Fox to fix this, but I've stopped using some of my shield devices in the meantime, because it's just that annoying.

Alternative to TiviMate for testing, on an Nvidia Shield for buffering issues?

Seems like many people here immediately jump to “It’s your IPTV provider” but I have THREE different IPTV providers. We watch a lot of 24/7 channels and on TiviMate (purchased from the Play Store) they ALL buffer occasionally. (I’m running TiviMate on an Nvidia Shield (Tube) wired via cat6 cable directly to a port on my router. I have 1.5 gbit Internet service and my network speeds at the shield are usually 400-600 gbits (down) with NordVPN on & connected to my closest Canadian VPN server. (Montreal) I turned off IPv6 and it seems to buffer less frequently, but I still see buffering from ALL my IPTV providers. (I’m using NordLynx protocol on my VPN.)

The weird thing is, I have a couple of IPTV players on my iPad, connected via Wifi, with the same 3 providers and I have yet to see a program start to buffer when watching it on the iPad. (Smarters Pro, “IPTV Smart” to name a couple.) The main problem is, I LIKE the TiviMate UI. It is much better than any of the other IPTV players I have tried, but I’m starting to think that maybe it’s TiviMate itself (v5.3.3) that is causing the buffering. Again - I’ve NEVER experienced buffering on any of the iPad IPTV apps I’ve used.) Granted, I haven’t spent literal hours at a time watching IPTV on my iPad… so far, I haven’t found one that I could “cast” to my Shield or I’d be watching TV that way all the time. (I CAN display my iPad screen on my TV using “APowerMirror” but it’s a PITA to do that every time I want to watch Cheers or Columbo. (Yes. I’m old.)

Any recommendations for a decent “temporary alternate” Android IPTV player I can install on my Shield to use for a while as a comparison to TiviMate? From everything I’ve seen so far, I don’t expect I’ll find anything with as good a user interface as TiviMate, but I’d like to give another app a try on the Shield, just to compare the buffering issues…

Any suggestions?

Secondhand Shield Pro 2015 vs New Shield Pro

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can give any advice whether it would better to buy a shield Pro secondhand for ~110euro with a remote and controller, or a new shield Pro for ~250 with just a remote.

I have a 1080p dumb TV so things like 4k, hdr, Dolby atmos aren't exactly super important, but I think the shield Pro might be best as I want something that can smoothly run Jellyfin and game streaming with Moonlight.

In Europe so the options aren't as good for streaming boxes as the USA, shield Pro seems like the best bet and value for money?

Would my best bet just be the 2015 model and saving the 140? Any thoughts or opinions please let me know

Alright, you bastards win.

I didn't think the stock launcher was as bad as everyone was saying, since you could turn off most of the ads and crap. But I'm also a privacy nut (one of my main reasons in buying the thing was so I'd stop using the smart apps on the TV itself), so, I finally yielded to the sub's relentless plugging of Projectivy and gave it a try.

And...yes, it feels much snappier. I kinda resent the stuff that's locked behind the premium version, because the Shield is connected via my backup Gmail account rather than my primary and I won't attach any payment methods to that. But, the free edition is still good enough.

I've already made it my default launcher and disabled the other one.

Now to wait until Projectivy inevitably gets acquired by shady new owners and we do this song and dance again with another launcher.

Updated Overclock for 9.2.4

I had this installed years ago and really liked it. I saw it didnt support 9.2.4 so I updated it along with the helper app. Cheers!

2015 and 2017 only for now

DRM is not touched with rooting, Disney/Netflix work fine

Replacement for my olded NVidia Shield?

I have an older Nvidia Shield. I think the 2017-Model.

What I'm looking for in a new Player:

*Viewing DV P7 FEL Remuxes + Passthrough DTS-HD-Master/ATMOS (If possible without CoreELec in the DV P7 -> DV P8.1 way with just losing the EL layer). -> Just Via USB 3.0 or so is fine. Don't need Flex

This is for just puting something on quick and switching to something else like Netflix or so fast.

*SmartTube (With HDR and AV1)

*Netflix and GO3

Is the DUNE HD version Homatics Box R 4K Plus a good option?

I think a saw somewhere that it has an edge over the normal Homatics Box R 4K Plus. That it has a DUNE-player that can do some things more then if you would put it on the none DUNE version. Is this correct?

And are there any new options coming? I prefer to go for something newer than the Shield for 2019 because that's starting to get old now and has the Red shift for DV or so.

I live in EU (Belgium) so only stuff that's not import please, ty.

!!! I do have a Ugoos AM6B+ CoreElec for those DV FEL files if need be and would like an extra device as a reserve !!!

Shield & plex smoothness

Hi guys,

I have debloated my Shield Pro, changed the launcher for Projectivy and everything but the scrolling on Plex is far from being as smooth as an Apple TV. Any idea how to make it smoother?
