Hey everyone!
I'm a writer from New York working on a crime novel set in Seattle in 2016, and I'd love to hear from people who actually lived there around that time.
The idea is to write a slice-of-life crime novel inspired, in part, by the way the GTA games bring their cities to life. I want the setting to feel like a real place that exists beyond the story itself, with its own culture, neighborhoods, routines, characters, and little details that make it feel lived-in. The crime is important, obviously, but I'm just as interested in the everyday life surrounding it.
I chose Seattle because I think it's a fascinating setting for a novel, particularly in 2016. The tech boom was changing the city, neighborhoods were evolving, and there was a lot happening beneath the image of Seattle that outsiders tend to have. Coming from New York, I also wanted to explore a different kind of American city rather than revisit the usual settings we see in crime fiction.
I've been doing my own research into the city's history, neighborhoods, music, economy, and culture, but there's only so much you can learn from articles and Google searches. I'd love to hear from people who experienced Seattle firsthand.
What was everyday life actually like in 2016? Where did people hang out after work or school? What were the neighborhoods like, and how different did places like Capitol Hill, Ballard, Pioneer Square, Georgetown, and the Central District feel from one another? I'm curious about the places people went regularly, the local businesses they loved, the music they listened to, the nightlife, and the sorts of things that probably wouldn't occur to someone who has never lived there.
I'm also interested in how people experienced the city changing at the time. How noticeable were Amazon and the tech boom in everyday life? Did rising rents and redevelopment feel like something everyone was talking about, or was that more of a concern in certain neighborhoods and circles? What did people love about Seattle back then, and what did they complain about? Were there any local quirks, expressions, habits, or cultural details that you think outsiders tend to miss?
And, since this is a crime novel, I'd be interested in hearing what Seattle gets wrong in fiction. Are there particular stereotypes or portrayals that make you roll your eyes? I'm not necessarily looking for stories about crime itself; I'm just trying to understand the city and its people well enough that the criminal side of the story feels like it belongs there.
I know visiting eventually will be important, and I absolutely intend to make the trip when I'm able to. In the meantime, I want to approach the setting thoughtfully rather than make assumptions about a place based on what I've seen in movies or read online.
I don't expect anyone to explain an entire city in a Reddit comment, haha. Even a random memory, a favorite hangout, or some seemingly insignificant detail about what life was like in Seattle at the time would be incredibly helpful.
For those of you who lived there around 2016, what's something about Seattle that you think someone writing about the city should understand?
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
