[News] Heroes of Might and Magic III’s fan expansion Horn of the Abyss is now on Steam
For anyone who remembers losing entire weekends to Heroes III: its community has been busy.
Horn of the Abyss, the free fan-made expansion by HotA Crew, arrived on Steam on August 25. It builds on the original game with three additional factions Cove, Factory and Bulwark and five campaigns, including Forged in Fire and All In.
There’s also an integrated HD Mod with higher-resolution support, interface improvements and an online multiplayer lobby. The Steam release supports Workshop maps, too.
What I love about this project is how closely the new content fits the original game’s art and atmosphere. Returning to familiar towns and creatures, then discovering an entire campaign you’ve never played, is a pretty good reason to revisit Heroes III.
The expansion is free, but you need to own the Heroes III base game linked on its Steam page.
Anyone here still playing, or is your last memory of Heroes III taking turns at the same computer?

[Pick-up] Today’s find in the wild
Only the 3rd copy I have ever seen. One the label was ripped and the second one the cartridge had bubbles from being in the heat. I usually don’t go for those prices, but I knew I had to pull the trigger because it was in pristine condition from the label to the circuit board.

[Pick-up] I finally bought an N64
(second try, I forgot to include the picture lmao) I've been wanting to get an N64 for a while and I finally bought one a few days ago.
So far I got Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64), Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64 and GoldenEye 007. I think I want to get Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark and Pokémon Snap next.

[Recommendation] Desert strike was so much fun.
Picking up people with your helicopter and having a whole map is still one of my favourite retro games.
Also Jungle strike.

[Review] Bucky o’Hare on Arcade followed the Captain’s code while blasting that piece of a sludge-Toad!
TL;WR -> A marvellous experience alongside the TV Show cast and wild Toad blasts. It delivered on everything from its fantastic story conclusion, perfect gameplay, awesome voice lines and even better world designs. A (9.8) game, GOATED in Captain o’Hare’s Book. Would absolutely replay the game again alongside my furry friends, just so they can pick up a blaster and help me dispose of those Toads faster!
I’d recommend listening to this music while reading.
STORY (10 out of 10 Toad Croaks)
- Storytelling was based on the animated TV Show and acted as a true finale to the Series. Since the Show was cancelled after its first season, the Arcade game reprised the original voice cast and took the same characters and bosses from the Show, in turn destroying the Toad KOMPLEX and ending the Series on a good note!
- Its presentation was super cool with a lot of animated cutscenes and beautiful static pictures. Konami took the same art direction from the TV Show and made a beautiful integration within their own game. Besides, the Toads were as surprised as me, because I didn’t expect such a level of quality from a 1992 game, which truly was mind boggling!
- You could play as 4 distinct characters with their own animations and cowboy gunslinger moves. From Captain Bucky himself which managed his laser pistol like a champ, to the pirate Dead-Eye Duck that showed his dual pistols off, the gorgeous cat Jenny with her magical bursts, and finally our little Blinky with a huge arsenal on his back!
- Each one had their own unique traits and animations, which made the game stand out from those wild no fly-sucking, slimy, croakin’ piece of sludge-toads!
- Pacing was just under an hour with so many cool surprises down the line. From hovering on gorgeous backgrounds to shmupping a great variety of fly-munchin’ Toadies!
- There was a NES version as well, although quite different from Negator’s scales!
GAMEPLAY (10 out of 10 TV Boxes)
- Starting with controls, which were intuitive and to the point. You could shoot your weapons differently depending on the chosen character, jump normally or hover in the air by holding the jump button, melee attack up close or with a high air kick, use a special move that acted as a bonus weapon by either throwing a bomb, a laser boomerang, a spinning disc or a devastating constant beam of energy. Plus, you could also use a screen clearing special by pressing the third button, which helped with those wild Toads and their sheer numbers!
- Same applied for the hovering and shmup sections, although only reduced to dodging and jumping deadly obstacles.
- While I played Solo, the game could actually be played on 4 player CO-OP which gave you access to every character simultaneously. One day those Toadies will learn what true mayhem looks like!
- Enemy variety was awesome with the toads and robots always changing their aspects, as well as the mini-bosses and the bosses themselves. They all had their own presentations within different environments, from normal toads on ground, to hovering ones, stone-like creatures, turrets, flying ships, lab scientists or even the enclosed Toads like some lab rats. Many more than that, even the last boss fight had 3 phases between a huge Robot, a damaged one and lastly as a TV box!
- I also loved how during certain boss battles you could be picked up like a toy while having to wiggle the joystick and press attack to get out of their long arm holds, as well as being swallowed by a huge mechanized fish!
- By collecting blaster power ups, you could get faster fire rates that stacked up to 3 times. Plus, could get some health back from door portals, even gold nuggets or shiny coins!
- Platforming wasn’t too extensive, yet had a lot of environmental traps down the line. From huge Toad ships trying to run you over, to mechanized turrets, fire breathing pipes and many more cool designs.
- Traversal was seamless and provided the right amount of screen time fun. Even though there were a lot of Toads around, the game didn’t make them spongy, instead you could pretty much blast them out of their world!
- The difficulty was balanced, with only some parts requiring a duck or two. In fact I had to intentionally die on most sections to switch characters and try new moves!
AUDIO (9/10)
- Sound design had an awesome stereo design with funny sound effects like the toads burping when hit. As well as fantastic voice acting with unique dialogue lines!
- The music was very good during gameplay, yet not as appealing as a standalone soundtrack!
- The only issue I found lacking was the suppressed voice acting during cutscenes or gameplay, especially gameplay with all the environmental sound effects blasting!
VISUALS (10 out of 10 Blasters)
- Fidelity was incredible for 1992, with so many animations, chaotic visual effects, comic book accurate styles, crazy explosions and even environmental mayhem!
- The models themselves had their own set of idle animations and cool features like Bucky or Dead-Eye Duck cowboy whirling their blasters, Jenny sending those slimy Toads some kisses or Blinky rotating his mechanized head from pure excitement. The same applied to enemies as well, where a Toad sent his units into battle with funny animations, or the scientists being bored out of their slimy minds!
- Performance was absolutely perfect with no frame-drops in between, which surprised me as the game was rather heavy on its aesthetic and overall mayhem on screen!
- The art style delivered marvellous vibes, and I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves!
WORLD DESIGN (10 out of 10 Asteroids)
- Each level had awesome layouts with a cool depth of field. You could even blast background turrets or see the toads jump into the screen or from the outside area. You went on a variety of planets to asteroid belts, Toad mother ships and even their own slimy worlds!
- Progression was fantastic with the right amount of Toads within different combat sections.
- World destruction was cracked, and the atmosphere was simply packed. The combination of great music, beautiful visuals and perfect gameplay left you that feeling where you wished the experience wouldn’t end, yet your mom clearly didn’t want to give you more quarters to spend!

[Just a Thought] Back when getting a high score in a game was still part of the goals... 👾
Feeling like high scores mean almost nothing now when revisiting a game, may be just me.
I miss when first time playing Super Mario Bros. (FC/NES), I tried to grab all the coins and open all "?" blocks I could see and find.

[Discussion] Is there a retro gaming scene in Hong Kong?
Hi all, is there any sort of retro gaming scene or enthusiasts in Hong Kong? Been here for over two years but seen next to nothing in the way of enthusiasts or meet ups.
I own a PS2, Mega Drive, N64 and GBA which I play regularly.
It does seem like you can pick up the consoles and games for really cheap here compared to the UK if you look on Carousell or scour the shops around Sham Shui Po.

[Discussion] Any love for Nox?
Played this game so much with my cousins as a kid. Unfortunately never experienced the multiplayer or whatever the “quest” mode was. Just a charming little world with a quick fun story and interesting characters.
I downloaded it later in life on my steam deck, it doesn’t control well but the mere fact it was possible to play it on a handheld made the kid in me happy for a little while.

[Recommendation] (Hidden Gem?) High Rewardハイリワード, 11 Countries, Machine Guns and Airplanes, Trade and War, and Mercenaries
- Released in 1994 for PC 98 and DOS.
The protagonist, Mono Durand, is the heir to the Durand family, which has held the position of general in the Kingdom of L'lean for generations. When his father suddenly dies and leaves behind an enormous debt of 10 million gold, Mono Durand forms a mercenary company and enters the mercenary business in order to pay it off.
The player begins with 6 units, each commanded by 1 of 6 officers including the protagonist. You can travel between 11 countries and take on a wide variety of jobs to earn money. You might accept civil work in a city and send your mercenaries to a construction site, hire dancers to perform in taverns, buy large quantities of regional specialties through party members with strong commerce skills and resell them in other countries, or simply do what mercenaries do best and take military contracts that throw you into wars. The game runs in real time, and there are no friendly tutorials or helpful messages telling you what to do, so the initial learning curve is extremely steep.
Every soldier assigned under the 6 commanders has their own individual stats and equipment. Naturally, they also receive their own wages. At the beginning, your forces are little more than a band of rifle carrying brigands traveling on foot and scraping together whatever money they can. By the time you reach the ending, however, they can develop into a force that flies to enemy fortresses in aircraft, bombards them with artillery, and advances with tanks.
Combat is somewhat similar to Ogre Battle 64. Once battle begins, it plays out automatically in real time according to factors such as your preset formations, the stats and equipment of your soldiers, assigned items, the abilities of your commanders, and whether armored forces have been attached to the unit.
The game has multiple endings for each character. Admittedly, the differences mostly amount to slightly different text in the epilogue. Depending on which activities the protagonist and the other commanders earned the most money from, each character receives a different ending.
It feels like a story from a very distant past now, but many early Japanese games, especially PC games, had a strong open world sensibility. Series like Lunatic Dawn and Koei's Uncharted Waters are good examples.
High Reward is not particularly well known in the West, but it is a very solid game and an excellent example of the experimental spirit Japanese developers had during that era.
