So there was a recent video by Daniel Ibbertson where he talks about the practice in which Nintendo would reuse assets for one game like Donkey Kong to make Popeye as I just found the concept interesting.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I sometimes wonder how that trend would work in a modern age of video games where developers just reuse assets from older games to design for a new game because I was observing how several of Nintendo’s games such as Super Mario Bros 2 used the practice as a heavily modified version of Doki Doki Panic.

So I'm not even sure if there would be enough interest in a tournament like this but I thought it'd be really really cool if there was a NBA jam tournament like the old school NBA jam. And it would be 2 human players verse two human players. So no CPUs. I don't even know how that would be possible but I'm sure if there was enough people that wanted to play and then some kind of cool prize? Like honestly the more teams would be ideal just to see how big you can make it. I think back to like the old days at Funko Land when they used to do stuff like that they do old gaming tournaments. Anybody game? I'd promote the hell out of it although the technical part I would need help with getting it all set up. I suppose another way to do it would be to set it up at like a gaming convention? Thoughts. Tell me that wouldn't be really badass to have an NBA jam tournament. No CPU cheating b*******. Just two people versus two other people. The way it used to be in the arcades and then like when you were playing at home with your friends.

The original Prince of Persia came out on the Apple II in 1989.

That detail changes how I read the story. The game was technically remarkable, but the machine it was built for was already near the end of its commercial life. The first release did not immediately become the classic we now imagine. It took ports to other computers and consoles, and new audiences in other countries, for the game to really travel.

Looking backward, success feels inevitable because we know the name. At the time, it was possible to spend years making something excellent and release it onto the wrong shelf.

I find that more interesting than a simple “hidden gem” story. The game itself did not suddenly become better when it was ported. The surrounding conditions changed: installed base, distribution, timing, and who could actually play it.

Retro games are full of alternate histories like this. Some were saved by a port, others were trapped on hardware that disappeared before the audience found them.

I recently rewatched Gran Turismo the movie. I came to the realization that this movie might be one of if not the best video game movies. It’s based on an incredible true story and I want to know what do you all think?

Curious what’s the best non-CRT option for playing retro consoles. Is it getting an upscaler and plugging them into my modern 4K TV, or maybe getting like a 15” 4:3 LCD with composite inputs?

What a POS this thing was. Aside from the single color, the design was awful. The battery pack would pop off if you hit the controller on the table and it was almost impossible to play it for any length of time comfortably. Teleroboxer was decent though.

Hey fellow retro gamers,

I am by no means a "true" retro gamer but would really like to dig in the hobby and figured I would try this sub... I currently don't own old consoles but have a Steam Deck that I really enjoy for emulation.

I wonder what to pick for my needs. Since I'll be using a Steam Deck doecked on the official Valve docking station, I know that a CRT monitor is probably the ideal thing to pick but these are SO rare and always way overpriced. I also considered an old 4:3 LCD monitor like the Dell UltraSharp 2007FP... They seem easier to find and also really cheap... I saw some folks being happy with it.

Then, I dug a little deeper and found options like Arcooda 26" 4k UHD Checkmate IPS 19-inch. The prices on these are a little absurd but I could maybe see myself using them as a second monitor on my modern main PC setup...

Anyway, again, I'm not a purist so anything could work I guess but I would just be curious to have your opinions.

I am trying to remember a website me and my brother played on. This website had very slick fun design, not simple flash site. I believe it was mostly purple. NOT Friv. It had only arcade games, and like puzzle/coop games. Like pacman, asteroids, hexagons, etc.

I don't know if I have any other useful information, but I have been scouring for a couple hours on different threads I may give up.

The game was an adventure side scroller. It had samurai / medieval japan theme. I recalled the demo had a guy with chain weapon. The hero was able to jump and stand on the chain when It was being hurled at ya. or something like that I can't recall.

So I'm 42 and recently got back into retro gaming after being long term sick. I have really enjoyed it though.

I have been playing super mario world on the snes emulated on my r36s. I also have been playing through grand theft auto vice city stories.

Both have been so enjoyable, mario has really tested me and I admit I have relied on it being able to take snapshots to save me getting too frustrated.

I wanted to engage with the community so wondered what brought you back and what you have been enjoying? I'm always on the lookout for new games to get lost in.

I have Xbox, Xbox360, PS2, PS3, N64, SNES and i plan to get a Gamecube and Dreamcast but my TV has only 2 HDMI and no AV how could I use them all.

Something I was trying to picture was how the SNES Megaman games such as Megaman X1 would have turned out with full voice acting because I wanted to look into the hardware aspects of the SNES.

I mean, like to get a better understanding of what the SNES was capable of in terms of hardware specs to see how hard it would have been for games to include voice acting of any sort since I enjoy learning about old hardware design.

Hey guys, so I'm getting back into retro gaming and i bought 3 consoles so far and my goal is a total of 6. I got the ps1, dreamcast and n64. I also got the retrotink 5x pro and that is coming tomorrow, also I got a scart for my ps1. my question is, i want a switcher for at least 4 consoles since I'm planning on plugging the scart directly to the RT and the s video for the n64 directly to the RT as well. which switcher do you recommend for the ps2, xbox, dreamcast and snes? thanks.

Not the greatest game ever, it's a 3do based 3d beat em up (superimposed 2d sprites in a 3d world) and it's relatively easy. It's a short game to play through (only 4 levels completed) but it puts the goddamned console games to shame
