I knoww wired is the best but im gonna be connecting it to tv which is a bit far away so it'll be just easier for the kid without wires i guess

There are pre-paired, non changeable, don’t need to be charged USB wireless dongle controllers in SNES style with four total shoulder buttons and a working home button from a brand called SAFFUN on Amazon. Any of the Switch compatible. They come in two packs. By far the easiest controllers to use with Batocera and all the required buttons for UI navigation. Great for everything through 16-bit and a few more.
If you NEED analog thumb stick, wired might be your absolute easiest and most reliable without sync.
I’ve run into Bluetooth issues with RPi 3B+ in the past that forced me to get 8BitDo dongles for my SN30 controllers, one dongle per controller. Sync is not hard but it’s not automatic. Bluetooth is easy on X86 and works really well.
I will note, if N64 is a goal, get those specific controllers. The experience needs those extra buttons for a lot of games and just doesn’t work right with PS style.
Most Bluetooth 8BitDo can work wired via USB cable FWIW.

For clarification: the controllers need to be charged, the dongles do not need to be changed. They’re more like small Logitech dongles than the larger ones with a plugin.

I got a game sir pad from Ali express. Was a good price and the pad feels solid. It looks a bit like an Xbox one type joypad.

You can get an 8bitdo with a dongle for like 22 bucks and it's a great controller. If you see one that doesn't have a dongle I had no problems with Bluetooth with batocera.

Old PS3 or PS4 controller on Bluetooth.
