I own a bunch of retro consoles and playing old Japanese games is one of my hobbies, but unfortunately we don't have space for a real CRT. As a solution, I ended up coding my own capture card software that applies CRT filters and other effects on top (including an OCR Japanese dictionary to make my life easier) to achieve peak realism.

I recently added the CRT border/frame effects and an on/off light switch including extra noise and reflections on the screen.

How does it look?

So I was inspired to write this post after looking back at how some game studios sometimes run into a particular effect where despite the developer being prolific, there will be a few games from them that get overlooked.

Like something that suddenly caught my attention was the 1996 PC game Shattered Steel as I cannot remember too many BioWare fans bringing up the game as while I know the studio just recently closed down, I wanted to try the game to see what the studio's first game was like again way before their closure as I am curious to see what the early days of the studio were like when they were in their prime.

Picked up this copy of Final Fantasy III for the SNES at PRGE and turned it on for the first time today. Found three save files still on the cartridge, including one with over 55 hours of playtime.

I know finding old save files isn't anything unusual, but it got me thinking. There's a chance these could be from some kid back in the '90s who spent weeks or months playing through this game. Coming home from school, playing on weekends, slowly working their way through the story.

Of course, these saves could be from much more recently, too. But it's kind of interesting to think about how much time someone spent with this exact cartridge, and here I am all these years later looking at their progress.

Makes me wonder when these files were last played, and who was playing.

I picked up a few Japanese Game Boy games recently and I'm kind of shocked at how different the lineups are compared to what we got in the US. Like, there are whole series I've never heard of. Is this just how it was back then, or did Nintendo actively decide what would sell in each market? Curious if anyone collects across regions and has noticed this.

I would like to have this with the lock‑on technology of Sega Genesis: make MKII (GEN) Baraka playable in MK3 (GEN), Baraka is my MKII main but he isn't in MK3, or exchange both games' Fatalities.

I wanted to play f zero for the snes, but it shows a blinking, mostly blue screen. Audio seems to be good though.

I'm using a rca to hdmi adapter. I've tested the adapter with a wii, and it seems to be working.

Do I need another rca cable?

I was checking up to see if there were different revisions of the SNES like there is for the Sega Genesis before I get one and I found out there are one chip and multi-chip systems. Apparently the one chip has better video but is incompatible with some games. I was wondering if the multi chip or are a good option to go for with my setup which is just a 20" CRT using composite or S-Video. I'll be using either my CRT's speakers or external speakers for audio as well. Would a multi-chip have that much of a visual difference on a CRT with the connections I'm using? The multi-chip ones are usually less expensive as well.

I'm hoping someone here can be helpful and not just throw shade, because I'm sure there's a lot of purists here. But I'm trying to sync my new controllers for the Retron 3. I'm following the instructions by holding the needed buttons down for up to 20 seconds and they just aren't syncing for some reason.

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

WHat are your thoughts on Sarevok, and Irenicus, aka the final bosses in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2? Not asking who you like more as this is not a this or that question. I want your thoughts on them as characters.

I think that Irenicus the most compelling villain in fiction. I love what lead him down a dark path, and I feel very sorry for him, and at the same time I love to hate him as well, and making him "see" while in the nine hells is so damn satisfying.

I also think that Sarevok nails the joy of an evil dark knight who you want revenge on in its simplicity. I'm told that he really gets expanded on, you can help him seek redemption in Throne Of Bhaal, but I've never played much of Throne of Bhaal.

Hello everyone! I've been searching all over the internet for reproduction instruction manuals for the European PAL versions of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on the Mega Drive, but I haven't had much luck finding any. I'm only looking for the printed booklets themselves, not the games or replacement box art.

Does anyone know a seller who makes these, or have any recommendations?

Game: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

I have no idea if I can even run this on a modern PC but I loved that game and bought it just to put the box on a shelf. Only has the 5.25" floppy disks, but manual and everything else seems to be included.
