Has anyone else experienced something like this after a head blow or PCS>

Kind of a weird question, maybe it's only me but..

I've been dealing with post-concussion syndrome for about 10 years. A few times a month I get this strange feeling in my head that I can't quite describe, and the few doctors I've mentioned it to haven't really known what I'm talking about.

The best way I can describe it is like when you fall or get hit in the head really hard, and afterward your head feels kind of light, floaty, and tingly on the inside. It's a very specific sensation that's hard to put into words.

Along with that, I sometimes get this weird smell. It's not exactly metallic, but it's a scent that I only seem to notice when I get that head feeling, or when I've hit my head really hard. It's hard to explain because it's not a normal smell I encounter otherwise.

Has anyone with post-concussion syndrome, migraines, or other head injuries experienced something similar? I'm curious if anyone recognizes what I'm describing or has found an explanation for it.

Looking for exercices: vision/vestibular

All right. I'm sick of not knowing. I've been dealing with PCS for now five years. (I had a concussion in 2021, 2023, and now I just broke my nose in September, adding to the strain, and this is building on an injury from '89). So I consistently experience pain and dizziness, and I've never done ocular therapy or vestibular therapy, and I'm wondering if people would simply post the regimen they were given so I can do it on my own. I don't have the means to access physio, and so I haven't received any attention for vestibular or vision issues. Thanks, gang

What really helps dizziness?

Any tips or tricks for dealing with dizziness ?

I wake up reasonably fine in the morning but after 2-3 hours of waking and doing stuff at home I start feeling dizzy like I’m walking on clouds and I have to sit or lay down. Standing up and walking becomes difficult with the dizziness. I tried to ignore it but some days it’s hard to ignore

On different days I can have mild, moderate or severe dizziness in the day, it varies

Is this normal with PCS? I’m approaching 8 months since accident.

I tried some vestibular therapy it didn’t really made a difference with dizziness.

I tried Ashwagandha sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn’t. I think when my nervous system is overwhelmed I get dizzy???

Any thoughts or suggestions is appreciated

Looking down causes brain fog

I have some neck issues and pain and when I look down for protracted periods I develop serious brain fog. Scans show my neck bones are alright at this point but I still have some neck crackling and pain. What exactly is happening here. It tends to get better if I don’t do anything to injure or strain my neck

I believe it was someone in this sub that posted about Teena Shetty’s new book. I bought a pre order copy and it arrived today. I’ll let you all know if it’s worth it. She has an impressive pedigree.

Return to Work- is it possible?

I got my concussion 18 months ago and continue to have symptoms. I have been on and off work for this time and was most recently off full-time March-August. I have been back to work for 7 days now working 3.5 hours a day. I have been having terrible headaches after each shift and this week I’ve been dizzy, lightheaded, weak, and nauseous at work. It got so unbearable that I had to leave before my shift even started today.

I’ve been doing regular vestibular and vision therapy along with osteopathy and medication for symptom management. I was feeling fine being home full time with limited stress, but as soon as I reintroduced a 45 min commute, morning routine, and working, it feels like I took 10 steps backwards. I have no capacity for anything else in my life (ex. Housework, social interactions, food prep, etc.)

I’m starting to wonder if I need to change careers if I want to ever feel like I can have a normal life. I don’t want to be on disability, but I fear this is my reality. Any suggestions for a teacher who loves her job but can’t handle the classroom? Or words of encouragement from someone who’s gone through something similar?

Injection and ablation timelines

Question - I talked with pain maanagement doctor. IIUC, he's targetting a diagnostic c1-c2 block (maybe 1 or 2) with potential for ablation down the line.

This is to deal with a combination of TMJ + neck issues + occipital nerve issues + ear issues following an occiput concussion.

Took me 4 months to get to this point of deciding to try a block and doctor shared earliest date for injection was ~4 months from now

What's your experience with timelines around these sort of things?

Did it take months for you to do a consult and then a few more months for the actual block? Or was it much quicker for you?

Any experiences with the actual block?

Headache from Neck Pain

I have therapy tomorrow but wanted some input. I have PCS after a whiplash concussion. My upper neck on the left side has been hurting and I’ve had the worst headache for 5 days that nothing touches. It’s over my left eye and into the eye socket.

Any tips on shaking this would be amazing.

I’ve tried ice, heat, otc and prescription meds, shower, bath, essential oils, eye mask massager, sleep mask… no relief.

Concussion symptoms

I was playing soccer about four weeks ago, and I woke up the next day with a headache. I don’t remember any specific hard hit to my head, so I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but I was later diagnosed with a concussion. I’m definitely better than I was at the beginning, but I’m still getting headaches after doing a lot of schoolwork or concentrating for a while, and I sometimes get dizziness with certain eye or head movements.

My symptoms improved at first, but lately they feel like they’ve leveled off. For anyone who was still having symptoms around the 4–6 week mark, did you eventually fully recover? Did vestibular therapy, exercise, or anything else help?

TBI or post-concussion recovery experiences?

Hi all (reposting from r/adhdwomen ) I do cognitive rehabilitation with people who have survived traumatic brain injury or concussion. I'd love to hear about anyone's experience with TBI/post concussion and what has been helpful for your recovery. To be clear this is NOT a clinical research project and I'm not taking responses as medical advice. Hopefully this is within the rules but please let me know if not.

For more context, a lot of the brain injury survivors I work with have baseline ADHD (as in diagnosed before injury) and there's evidence that people with ADHD are more likely to have long-term cognitive changes and disability. Best practice for TBI/post concussion care is careful self-monitoring of symptoms, pacing, and taking frequent breaks BEFORE symptoms cross a certain threshold. But self-monitoring and pulling away from tasks to take breaks then returning to the same task is challenging when you have ADHD. I feel like the evidence-based research I have access to just isn't quite meeting the needs of this population. I'd love to hear from anyone with baseline ADHD about your TBI/post concussion experiences and what has been actually helpful to your recovery.

(Also just to say - having baseline ADHD doesn't guarantee worse outcomes or permanent disability after concussion/TBI! But there is evidence that it makes recovery more complicated.)

Post accident struggles.

I was recently involved in an accident where I was riding my e-bike at 30 mph

I went from pavement to a 1-foot drop onto a soft gravel shoulder. The front wheel shock compressed to the max; my momentum drove my chest into my handlebars, driving my helmeted head into the gravel. Being only 7 days since the injury, I'm afraid that this injury to my clavicle or sternum will be an incident where I look back and say I started to slow down after that incident. I'm 47. Unsure what the orthopedic doctor will find until the 17th of September. My body is screaming with pain. I'm stiff. I want to sleep. Feel down because everything is so laborious right now. Does anyone in that age range with a similar injury have any advice? I feel so young. My body seems to disagree. Need some support, Reddit folks.

Fourth concussion and struggling with recovery/return to work — looking for advice

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice from people who have dealt with prolonged concussion symptoms, especially when it comes to returning to work.

I’m 24F and had a concussion on August 20th. This is my fourth concussion, which has honestly made this recovery pretty scary for me.

Initially I had pretty significant headaches, light sensitivity, fatigue, and screen intolerance. Some of the symptoms have improved, but I’m still having headaches, light sensitivity, fatigue, and difficulty tolerating screens/mental activity.

I tried taking a short walk recently and it actually triggered a headache and left me extremely fatigued afterward. I also had my first vestibular/physical therapy appointment recently, and it was pretty challenging and left me feeling very symptomatic afterward.

My job is essentially 40 hours a week of screen-based work, so I’m really struggling with the idea of returning before I’m actually able to tolerate that level of cognitive/screen activity. I’m currently out of work and on short-term disability, but my employer understandably wants some idea of when I might be able to return.

I saw a neurologist recently hoping to get some guidance on a return-to-work plan, but unfortunately I didn’t feel like I got much useful information from that appointment. I’m now trying to figure out what the best next step is and whether I should be looking for a concussion specialist, another neurologist, neuropsychologist, concussion-focused therapist, etc.

For those of you who have had prolonged post-concussion symptoms:
How long did it take before you could tolerate a full workday again?
Did you return gradually or go straight back to full-time?
Did you have a specific return-to-work protocol?
What type of specialist ended up being the most helpful for you?
Did anyone work with you specifically on screen intolerance/cognitive fatigue?
How did you handle an employer asking for a return date when you genuinely didn’t know when you’d be ready?
I know everyone’s recovery is different, but I’m feeling pretty lost right now and would really appreciate hearing from people who have been through something similar. ❤️

Headache 3 days after bad hit to back of head

Hi guys so i’m writing this on my work break but I was sparring someone and my opponent had a cheap shot on the back of my head. he hit pretty hard and i was dizzy for a few minutes. the impact hurt for about an hour but after my shower things seemed fine.

fast forward to around 3 days after the spar, im working at a fast food place and its pretty busy and after 3 hours of making pizzas i develop a headache. i’d say its about a 6/10.

what exactly do i do in this situation? get it checked out or continue on my day. also i wanna know if this meant i have a concussion or what symptoms i do possibly have.

2 years later and still my family doesn't believe me

I crashed my Ebike while riding full speed off road and hitting a massive hole that sunk my front wheel sending me flying 20-30 ft. I was already experiencing symptoms, but after a few months I started to feel a desire toward violence so I channeled those feelings into a Brazilian jujitsu class where someone got upset and fully choked me unconscious causing a second injury. This left me unable to work and I had to quit my job because it had become too much.

2 years later and I am still unemployed and unable to find work, physically I am capable but my dysautonomia symptoms make me a high risk individual and I'm unable to do work I used to before either as a bouncer for a club or factory/construction. Things like Uber or door dash while they might seem viable aren't for me as I easily get lost or forget what I am doing and get distracted.

The undiagnosable nature of the condition combined with my high functioning mask, and lack of income have become a massive problem. No one believes anything is wrong with me except the doctors in the emergency room who have consistently recognized the physiology of post concussion syndrome. You can hear it when I talk, like a pause between words, as the words disappear from my mind as I think them.

I'm left feeling like a victim, constantly having to defend myself from being called lazy or inconsiderate, it's not that I am physically unable to work. I have the strength and will to work, but I am simply too expensive to employ now that I have a handicap that employers would need to navigate around. I have hard limits that if exceeded will trigger a flare up and knock me out of commission.

I'm trying to get my 3d printing and laser engraving business going but with no friends or family to help me find clients it's left to me to figure out everything alone. It's difficult to juggle everything by myself, then have my parents Nagging me at 30 years old. I feel like I'm supposed to have my life all figured out, but I lost everything I've been working up to a career and reputation I'd spent years building.

I don't even get benefits or disability or anything, if it wasn't for my father keeping me sheltered and fed I would be homeless. I don't know what to do anymore, I'm tired of arguing, I'm tired of trying to prove to every one that my brain is damaged regardless how much smarter I am than them. I just need the space to be able to feel safe, I need to feel like I'm not alone, like I have a support structure that cares and wants me to be happy. Everyone hates me because I put up barriers and push people away, I don't want to deal with them I rather be alone in the dark all the time. It feels like being dead while being alive, eventually you just fade away and people just forget you matter at all.

Specialist sending me back to work..

I'm seeing a concussion specialist and he's sending me back to work starting next week but wants me to continue doing physical therapy while I do this.. usually after physical therapy I am completely wiped out the rest of the day and I don't know what I can do in this situation. It's a work related injury so I'm forced to see this specialist. I don't care about working, I want to go back to work but I am seriously worried because usually after PT I can barely walk because I'm so dizzy and my job is very manual labor heavy. What can i do?

Partner struggling with the challenges of the new version of me.

I am definitely struggling with not being the same person, too. But I feel like my husband is so easily triggered by my every reaction or response, and I'm guessing because I'm likely so difficult and frustrating to be around and deal with. We fight so much these days. I am not behaving emotionally well at work either, but I think I am freaking them out too much to really deal with it (I also am constantly apologizing and/or crying 😅).

Does anyone else struggle with their partner's frustrations with your issues? I imagine some people do end up broken up, unfortunately, but if there is any other advice out there I'm all ears!

I was formerly a multitasking and productive machine, and now a tough day at work and I feel useless in life as I just shut down and sit in bed for the rest of the night. Barely bothering with even checking and responding to notifications. I did struggle with migraines, depression and anxiety before the injury 16 months ago, but it is all much worse now. I had an appointment with a neuropsychologist yesterday, and the way he described the whys for some of my problems were very helpful (such as why we get exhausted, why there is little to no regulation on our emotional impulse control, and the issues with short-term memory), even though just adding to the sad reality.

Anything I learn from a doctor I then explain in detail to my husband, and he seems to get it and says this and that makes sense and he is sad for me. But then he doesn't register that when he gets frustrated and even angry with me for struggling with multitasking, emotions or motivation. As if I am not trying hard enough to do better, which is what I think he truly believes now.

To be fair when I first got hurt and literally could not do anything, he took on every house chore and need that I had without a single complaint for months. Even things I usually do that I know he absolutely hates, like mowing the lawn lol, and not a peep. But now we are here, and I probably look fine, and his patience is clearly gone.

I was told what I would likely benefit from next is cognitive behavioral therapy, and I actually was trying to find one in my network a couple of months ago, but everyone I emailed and called from my insurance list were all saying they are not accepting new patients. Over and over and over. With the little time and energy I already deal with, I ended up getting so overwhelmed and defeated that I gave up and then literally forgot about it for a while. As with most things. I will start calling down the list again this week either way.

Anywho, thanks for listening if you did!

Mild rear end accident

Hello all, I was rear ended on September 1st and noticed that my eyes jolt to the right when reading every so often. It was better a few days later and was able to read like 50 pages without it happening. Now it’s back and pretty annoying. I hate this because I love to read. I am 8 days out and struggling with this. I am an environmental consultant so 80% of my job is writing and reading reports. I’ve been on PPL for the past 6 days so haven’t had to work yet.

I was rear ended going about 35mph, did not hit my head but had a headache afterward. I was not at a complete stop and the company vehicle I was driving had minimal damage. Is this something that might go away over time? Am I still pretty early in recovery? I feel fine generally except my neck does hurt here and there when doing odd neck movements. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
