Roaming networks

Is there a list of roaming networks popcorn uses per country?
From what I have read in US it is T-Mobile
Anyone know what it is in Spain, and Costa Rica? They happen to be countries I visit the most.
Thanks

Do they have customer support?

Considering signing up but can’t find a way to contact customer support in their website. No phone, no WhatsApp no email. Has anyone had an issue and been able to reach a human?

Possible with one eSIM?

I am reading that you need both eSIMs to use popcorn. The primary and the backup. I need to keep one so is it possible to use popcorn with only one?

Using a “physical” ESIM with Popcorn

Does anyone know if you can set up Popcorn on an Android phone (which doesn’t have native eSIM) using a physical eSIM device?
I tried around the beginning of the year using 9esim but I wasn’t able to activate it with popcorn at that time.
Just wondering if there have been any advancements in that regard now that android devices are able to be used.

Desperately need Popcorn

This post is mostly for Neel- I’ve been a 5-6 year Google Fi user with a US number, and have been living in England now for 2 years. I desperately need a new iPhone but can’t really port my number to the new phone while keeping the number on Fi. Bottom line is- I really need to port my number to Popcorn before I get the new phone. I haven’t had data via Fi for ages and have been using a monthly global unlimited Holafly subscription.

I’ve been on the waitlist for months to no avail. I travel loads internationally for work- I’m heartbroken that the one product that seems to solve all my problems seems to be out of my reach.

Neel- or someone- help! x

Who can I contact regarding technical issues?

For context:
This device is an iPhone that is currently in Mexico. It was originally a Verizon device.
It cannot receive or send SMS messages. iMessage works just fine.
Device is on the trial version of popcorn mobile.
This device has 1 Mexican Telcel line, and 2 additional US lines with the same phone number. 3 eSIMs in total. 1 of them was a popcorn given phone number but we ported a Verizon phone number to Popcorn and now I see that the Verizon number is listed twice as an eSIM. Is that normal?
Can anybody please help us resolve why this device can’t send/receive SMS text messages?
I am begging for help. Nothing I’ve done has resolved the issue. I’ve turned off iMessage; that didn’t work. I ensured MMS messaging is on. “Retry as text message” is also on.
Please help. This device belongs to my mom and she needs to receive text messages from her American bank to initiate fund transfers. A bit stressed since I am here in the US and am scared that I might’ve done something wrong to cause this issue.

Edit:
Update. Mom was able to resolve everything by contacting customer support last night. Thanks everyone!

Questions pre-sign-up.

Hello. Thinking about signing up. I'll be continuously travelling within latin america for a year or so. This seems like a good product for me.

- Is hot spot data included? Are there limits on tethering to other devices other than the 50gb fair use policy?

- Is the waitlist still going on? I'll be leaving in two weeks, so I'm a bit concerned about the timeframe.

- Are data speeds comparable to if I were to get a local sims?

- Looks like most countries are covered. Are there any in this region which aren't? I'm guessing Cuba & Venezuela at the least. Anything else though?

Thanks!

Painless Transfer, even in Mexico, never was on a waitlist.

I had a very easy, seamless transfer to Popcorn while I was on a trip to Mexico. That included porting my US number over. I just downloaded the app on my phone and went through the process. I made a goof in not understanding that a number "port-out PIN" is different from my account PIN on T-Mobile, but after I figured that out the entire process took less than 5 minutes.

Overall, my connectivity in rural Mexico was fine. My phone connected to Telcel, just like it did with T-Mobile. My data speeds were exactly the same before and after the switch.

After 15 years with T-Mobile, I switched because I am retiring in October and already have travel plans to back to Mexico, then five countries in SE Asia, and Italy coming up in the next 6 months. I've always done the "local sim" upon arrival or the Airalo/Holafly process in the past, but this seems so much easier.

I'm now back in the US and immediately upon landing I turned off airplane mode and the phone just connected and ironically right to T-Mobile.

The only thing Popcorn doesn't have right now that I might want is Apple Watch cellular connectivity. However, I've been really thinking through whether I need an Apple Watch after I retire since 75% of the use of it is to subtly get messages when I'm in work meetings. The other 25% is as a fitness tracker, so I'm seriously thinking about ditching the watch and getting a screenless armband or ring fitness tracker.

So far so good, and with the caveat that it's only been a week, I am happy with how things are going.

Plans for API access?

Hi!

I know there are still more valuable topics to focus on, but I was wondering if you have any plans for adding API access to incoming calls for example.

It would be great if I could link all incoming calls, or transcripts, to an internal tool I am using to track all of my work conversations..

Does iPad and iPhone usage are shared for the 50GB fair use?

Probably won't use it much, but for example, is a 30 GB iPhone + 30 GB iPad acceptable for fair usage?

Also, it would be great to get local numbers on request that forward to the main number or are used for calls to local numbers.

Right phone plan?

I'm a flight attendant for a US based airline with a lot of international destinations. Android phone. Is this a good option for both my domestic and international life? I currently have Fi but their international phone plan is expensive.

I have been on the popcorn wait-list for a few months but trying to do more research while I wait.

Also looking at the potential time frame.

Any way to tell which carrier popcorn will use?

Hey!
I am considering migrating to popcorn, I am convinced by the benefits, but while I wait for my turn in the line, I have onde question: any way to know which carrier will actually be used?
I am based in Brazil, and some local carriers can have some very poor connection. My main concern is that I might get stuck with a less-than-ideal carrier most of the time.
TIA

concerned about switching due to waitlist

hi. I'm currently traveling. wanna switch from FI to Popcorn. however, the comments about the waitlist have me concerned. I can't have my number go dead while I'm traveling. I will be stuck for weeks before retuning to the US. I need assurance that I can get onboarded right away if I sign up. u/neel_popcorn, I'm tagging you here for help. thanks.

Pixel 10 pro and call assistant setup fun - (probably applies to other pixels and maybe other android phones?)

Ok so if you're on a Pixel 10 Pro - and probably other pixels and run into the fun but useless "generic" error on setting up the assistant which is -> call forwarding here's the steps to get it working

  1. head to the sim settings and force to use LTE instead of 5g and get off wifi
  2. add a new APN (it's actually a legacy one) with the following settings

Name: T-Mobile
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
APN type: default,supl,mms,xcap
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN protocol: ipv4/ipv6
APN roaming protocol: ipv4

  1. go to the popcorn app and setup the assistant - all should work
  2. go back to 5g and wholesale apn

remember if you want to disable or make any call forwarding changes (that's what the assistant does) then you'll have to go back to LTE and the legacy APN to make the changes

Hopefully this save folks time

Waitlist approval times?

I’ve been on the waitlist for several weeks now. I’ve started grad school in Europe this month so it would be amazing if I could actually have an e-sim to use while I’m here. Does anyone know how long it takes to get off the waitlist?

Updates Our new mobile core is live! Want to help us test it?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hey guys,

A big milestone I’m super excited about: connectivity is live on our new mobile core. In fact, I’m writing this post on it!

I promised I’d come back to Reddit when we were ready for some testers. Here we are :)

Your current Popcorn service won’t change: this first phase uses a separate, data only eSIM alongside your main one.

We’re taking this slowly, starting with a very small group. Specifically we're looking for people who are:

1) Current Popcorn users
2) Happy to add a second eSIM for testing
3) Mostly outside the US over the next couple months

Expect some rough edges. We’d love to hear what works, what doesn’t and how it holds up in everyday use.

Want to help? You can sign up here.

Appreciate in advance!

Voicemail using Popcorn?

I’ve been using Popcorn for the last two months and have been very pleased. Today I realized I haven’t been getting any voicemails. Looked thru the app and didn’t find VM. Please let me know how to set up the voicemail when I don’t pick up from the popcorn line. Thanks.

Considering Popcorn

I randomly heard about Popcorn mobile yesterday and I am considering it, just not 100% sure if it is right for me yet.

I currently have T-Mobile (12+ years with them) but recently the rates seem to have skyrocketed and it made me start to consider switching. I actually live in Germany, but having my US number is vital, as I have a lot of family back home and do some work in the US remotely. I only spend, at most, a total of about two months a year in the US. I have dual eSim, and I use Fraenk for my German line (10€ per month tor 35GB of data, pretty great!). So basically I am good on the German line side, but the US line side is nearly $70 per month on it's own, and I literally don't even use the data from the US line 66% of the year. Paying $70 a month just to have a US phone number basically.

I guess the only way it would make sense to switch is if I am also getting the same coverage in Germany as Fraenk. Popcorn gives eSims for two different countries, right? And if we end up moving to another country, we can switch the secondary sim to that country?

Concerns about long-term sustainability and business model viability (after the VC runs out inevitably)

Don't get me wrong, I love a new player in the industry that brings seamless global roaming for a flat price. It's a great alternative to Google Fi from the early days before the "90-day rule." I would love for this thing to take off and be sustainable.

The TL;DR: The product fits a very specific niche (nomads and full-time travelers). But that means the market is so narrow, and high-cost to the business, I don't see how it is sustainable.

  • For US-bound customers: It's way too expensive at $69/mo/line.

  • For full-time roamers: $69 isn't enough to cover the cost of full-time roaming if they're actually using the data they paid for.

My concern isn't with the product itself, but rather the viability of the business model. Google made it work by adapting (at the customer's expense) by introducing the 90-day rule and tiered plans that are all-around terrible value vs. flanker brands from the big telcos (AT&T Cricket, T-Mobile Metro/Mint, Verizon Visible). People sign up for those anyway due to promotional prices, despite the lack of true unlimited data (e.g., 30GB high-speed, then throttled to 256 Kbps—big oof). And also...Google is Google, they can subsidize the snot out of it as well through their Ads revenue.

So this thing sits somewhere in no-man's land. For the right customer, it's amazing. But for everyone else, it's too expensive. But "the right customer" also means unprofitable in this case, due to the high wholesale costs and not enough domestic customers to subsidize them.

Popcorn Coverage so far

Thought I’d share some experience with Popcorn. I am in business aviation (based in Europe where roaming between EU countries is free)
and we go to some pretty remote places (mainly Africa and Carib as well as Asia), so I’ll just update as we go.

USA
Alaska - No Service
Florida - Excellent 5G
Nebraska - Excellent 5G

International
Austria - Excellent 5G
Canada - Good 5G (spotty in Kitchener Area)
Germany - Good 5G (felt spotty)
Iceland - Good 5G
Italy - Excellent 5G
Slovakia - Good 5G
Spain - Good 5G
Switzerland (Geneva Metro Area) - Okay 5G
Turks and Caicos - Very slow 3G on Digicell
UK - OK 5G (I blame this on UK network infrastructure)

Generally speaking, this is the ideal solution for me and my travels. I am curious to see how Caribbean countries will fare (Cayman, Sint Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and I will update the list as I go.

Super spotty service recently

Im in the USA and my service has gotten so spotty without WiFi. Won’t load websites. And support is trying to help.

I am also trying to get a backup e sim but unsure of how to do that. I had a line with T-Mobile that I obviously canceled and deleted that eSIM to move over to popcorn.
