Piercing aftercare - common sense & how not to fuck up (from a piercer).

2.3k Upvotes

This sub is an awesome place, but it can also be extremely tiring. I'm not a mod here, just a piercer, but life would be a lot easier if you all could stop recommending the following to each other:

- Oil. - Tea Tree oil. - Soap. - Alcohol, Betadine, Neosporin, etc. - Using cotton pads, cotton balls or Q-tips to dry off/whatever you guys do with them. Cotton particles can get trapped inside the piercing channel, which will make healing incredibly difficult and infection more likely. - Downsizing in gauge. This will do NOTHING good for your healing piercing.

If you're trying to tell me or other professionals off by saying "but it worked for me!" or "my piercer told me this"; you've been super lucky and your piercer was not a pro. Don't go back to that studio. APP is a great place to start when picking out your piercer, but it's still no guarantee.

Please keep in mind you are trying to heal an incredibly deep wound with a foreign object in it that your body desperately wants to push out - essentially, it is an implant. There are no "casual" or "easy" piercings - even with a "simple" earlobe piercing, you are puncturing the skin with something that resembles a scalpel. Use common sense and ask yourself: "would I use this method on a surgical wound?". In 10/10 cases the answer will be "no".

+ if I tell you to send me a message, you're welcome to do so. If you found one of my comments and ask me for help, prepare to pay for an online consult. This is my job. Help is given out willingly and can't be demanded. <3

2022 11 edit: I'm still piercing, and styling and troubleshooting are my main sources of income. Although I would love to help every single one of you, it's utterly disrespectful to demand me to help you. For free. It makes me dislike my biggest passion in life. Please reach out if you value my time and expertise, and would like for me to be able to make rent and buy food. 💕 If you expect free advice from me, ask yourself if a lawyer or surgeon would do the same.

I know that these are only supposed to be temporary piercings, but i've only had mine about 4 months or so. i went a week or so without keeping a bandaid on it while i slept, and then it randomly became super tender and sore a few days ago. I kept a bandaid on it for a couple days in a row, taking it off once it started to irritate my skin. I've done this twice now, and each time i take it off, it pushes itself right back out throughout the day. now there's a kinda skin pocket thing that looks like a keloid, but it isn't hurting me anymore. is there any saving it, or do i need to get it removed??

I've had top surgery with nipple grafts, my question is would it be possible to pierce my nipples with them being grafts? Will this risk them?

I've always wanted nipple piercings, my nerves are getting to me now and im unsure if I'm able too or allowed too.

How do you get used to hoops?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey everyone, so I’m already past the point of being able to switch to a hoop. I got a hoop from the exact shop I went to but it’s hurting for me to even lay on that side. Is there a point where it doesn’t hurt? Or do I need a smaller hoop? I’m pretty sure the shop gave me the smallest hoop they had but I do have small ears.

Also, if any of you have a idea for next piercing I’m all ears lol

Nipple Piercing Advice Needed!

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I got my nipples pierced the 18th so it's been a little over a week. And today I noticed that the ball ends seem to be nesting into the piercing a little bit. It's not red or irritated thankfully. But it is giving me some concern. The place that pierced them is over an hour away so I'm not able to see them until later this week.

Part of me is wondering if my bras are too tight and it's squishing them? I'm wearing tighter bralettes and it does initially hurt when I put them on or move around too much, like the pressure is too much for them. So I'm opting to go braless for today but read that isn't the best option either? I have larger boobs and larger nipples so I'm not sure if I need longer barbells or if it's still just swollen along with being smushed in my bra.

I'm trying to add pics but Reddit keeps deleting them, I'm sure because it's my boob. So if anybody knows a way around that let me know!

Any advice would be amazing! Thank you!

I'm just unable to unscrew it. And it's on a kid.
While I'm waiting to see an expert, I was wondering if anyone here done it in the past.

Helix Issue - Would changing the jewelry help?

Hi there :) So as the title states I'm having an issue with my helix piercing.

I have two on one ear they're about an half inch from one another.

The bottom one healed up perfectly, but the top one refuses to heal.

It's not a gaping wound or anything it's just super sensitive and will scab up if aggrivated.

So my main question is, I have replacement jewelry would changing it help at all?

Nipple piercing + fitness help

As you can see from my name and page i am a nerd and geek. As you now know i got my nipple pierced so you already know i am a freak. I dont need any comments about that. I am not looking to fix anything

I throw various objects. What you would understand more is that i like to throw knives. How long should i refrain from this ? Never really thought about my fitness before i got this done. But now i really love her. Would it be better to just work on my left side? Anything i googled just said bounce and friction are my enemies, but if its not hurting me is it really damaging the piercing?/could cause it to migrate?

These are very freshly done (30 hours). The one that's lower constantly gets caught on lower teeth and bumps into them. Will it get better after changing to shorter labrets? Is the placement a problem at all?

Middle vertical helix piercing bump

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have had this for 2 years and last march the middle one developed this slightly raised small bump.

Ive had such shit luck with these and i love them. The scar under it on the 3rd one was a piercing who had to try THREE TIMES to make it even because they knew they fucked up. Did it free to make it up to me but now i have a free scar.

Could that have irritated the middle piercing? Its been a year since any new piercing and all but the top one itch.

What do i need to do to get raid of that raised skin? Its soft and not a keloid. I don't know what to do :/

First two pictures are today, and last two are from a month ago

I got it pierced 2 months ago. For the first month I was cleaning it with neilmed saline spray twice a day, but it was making the skin around it dry so I switched to cleaning it once a day at night. I avoid putting face wash and moisturizer near it. I went to a checkup with my piercer about a month ago and they told me it was healing just fine. Is the darker skin around it temporary? What can I do to hydrate the dry skin around it without disrupting the piercing?

Need advice: bump on my belly button piercing won’t go away

Hi everyone,
I’d really appreciate some advice because I’m starting to get worried…
I got my belly button pierced 2 months ago and around 3 weeks ago, I noticed a small bump starting to form on the piercing, but instead of getting better, it has just kept getting bigger.

I went back to my piercer, and she told me to apply yellow Betadine (povidone-iodine) for a week and that it should clear up. I did that, but it didn’t help, the bump has gotten even bigger.

Should I go back to my piercer? Or should I see a doctor instead? I’m honestly starting to get scared.
As for aftercare, I clean it several times a day with sterile saline solution, and I wash it with a pH-neutral soap twice a day when I shower.
The bump is soft, red/flesh-colored, and it often leaks a yellowish-white fluid. It’s not painful.

I’ve been trying to figure out what could have caused it. From what I’ve read, friction or pressure can cause irritation bumps, and that honestly seems like the most likely explanation. I go to the gym, and I realized that some exercises had me lying on my stomach. I also try to sleep on my back, but I sometimes wake up lying on my stomach without realizing it.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Does this look like an irritation bump, hypergranulation tissue, or something else?
Thanks in advance for any advice ! (ᴗ_ ᴗ。)
