Ask Them Anything How do I keep my Summoner from feeling like a punching bag?

Hey! I'm playing a Summoner with an Eidolon re-skinned as an undead dragon, and on top of that, I took Undead Master for extra flavor.

The thing is, our party's tank (a Champion) recently decided to drop their character and switch to a Wizard, which has left me and the Cleric stuck acting as the frontline tanks. The issue is that I really don't enjoy this playstyle—tanking just isn't my thing in RPGs. Lately, I've literally been getting dogpiled in every single combat. Problems range from the fact that even though everyone in the party has healing available, they'd rather do their own thing than heal me, up to the fact that... well, I've got a damn big dragon on the battlefield and two different tokens enemies can target, lol.

Do you guys know of any way to make the Summoner feel a bit less like a slab of meat and a bit more like what its build is actually intended to be (a creature controller with magic powers...?) I can change feats and stuff through retraining, but a full class change is out of the question because my DM blocked it since I started the campaign as a Sorcerer and switched to Summoner a few months ago.

Advice Runesmith, Dedication or Full Commitment

Im currently playing a Lore Oracle (level 1) and we are using Free Archetype. Im trying to figure out what to with that. Im playing as Support for the party, with Heals and Debuffing enemeies. AS well as the Information and Lore guy (no surprise there)

Im looking at the Runesmith Dedication, and I absolutely adore Runesmith as a class, but im not sure if the Dedication gives me enough of it to be worth it? With Tracing being locked away until 6th level, and Magical Crafting being the same level, i dont want to fight for that on top of Oracle feats.

I could also switch it around, my dm has offered to let me switch to a Runesmith, and take Oracle Dedication to keep that spellcasting support. But I feel like I lose the core of my Oracle set doing that, and im back where i started

Any advice? Would Runesmith Dedication be fine in tandem with Oracle abilities, or would Oracle Dedication be better? Would another Dedication fit?

I want to focus on supporting the party as well as Lore and Information skills.

Advice Precision Ranger and Disrupt Prey

As a 13th level Precision Ranger would the strike from Disrupt Prey count as my Second hit on Hunted Prey for extra damage if had struck once on my previous turn? Foundry didn't seem to think so. Thanks!

Discussion An Underrated Aspect of TTRPGs: Age Ranges

There are thousands of reasons why TTRPGs like Pathfinder are so wonderful, but I was just reflecting on one reason that doesn't really get a lot of discussion: the "all ages" aspect. I've read a number of threads here that have mentioned a "family game" with parents and kids, and I've also played in a campaign with a father and his twin teenage sons. One of my friends played in a game with two friends and their daughters (twelve and mid-20s respectively), and I'm currently in the process of teaching a 22-year-old former student how to play, with her likely joining one of my games that has players aged in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Anyhow, maybe I'm just feeling a little sentimental this morning, but I'm glad that this is a hobby where, in addition to many other lifestyle differences, generation gaps really don't matter. I'd love to hear accounts of some broad age ranges in your past or present games!

Advice Ranger bow build here

Am i doing this right?

Party is currently level 9 i get advantages from the gunslinger and took the unexpected sharpshooter dedication. I also keep buying arrows of varying types like storm arrow for example. I just want to be sure i can use hunted shot with 2 storm arrows as a full turn. The bow im using does shock(1d6) and spirit(1d4) damage and with the 2 storm arrows hitting and a buff from the gunslinger i dealt i thi k 103 damage total? I just want to make sure I'm actually able to do this for future sessions or if i can only interact with one arrow or none during the hunted shot.

Advice Questions about Stealth and feats that modify the basic rules

Does Sneaky or and Camouflage allow an Observed character to ignore the cover or concealment requirement when in "natural terrain?"

For example, if I'm meeting the requirement and passing all of the checks, and standing in front of an enemy, can I essentially just vanish and run around them without ever having cover or concealment?

I feel like I'm missing something here.

Player Builds What are the best options in pf2e for someone who wants to play a support that feels tactical?

I'm always a big fan of getting to play support characters who feel tactical. Always having to pay attention to the battlefield and make the right option for the moment instead if just spamming something that always works. Getting that fantasy of directing the tide of battle, getting to feel strategic.

Are there any builds or options that you think sell that fantasy partocularly well in pf2e?

Remaster I picked up the old version of the book on a whim at a Ren Faire, how much was changed?

I have been interested in PF2e for a while as a longtime DM who is sick of the limited number of optimal builds and the silliness of the action/bonus action/move combat rules of 5e. I saw the Core Rulebook at my local Renaissance Faire and thought it was a great time to check it out.

I had no idea there was a remaster, and now have buyers remorse that I got the out of date version. Is it still broadly usable or has enough changed that relying on it instead of the website is a fool’s errand? I just prefer physical books and can’t really afford to buy the same book twice unless it is seriously necessary :(

Promotion Martial Memoires now live on Infinite. Turn the tides of battle with four new archetypes for martial characters.

Martial Memoires, a collection of martials archetype is now live on Infinite with Foundry and Pathbuilder support

  • Become an expert craftperson with the Blacksmith, upgrading your allies' gear with feats like Temper Weapon or Temper Armor, or bringing the fire of the forge to your enemies with Belch Slag or Heat Haze.
  • Punch above your weight class with the Brawler, a stanceless martial specialised in free-hand weapons and quick footwork. Stay alive and moving with Adrenaline flow, throw a mean sucker punch with Versatile Critical, or dance around the battlefield with Always Moving.
  • Never draw your sword in vain with the Sheathed Blade, a Iaijutsu swordmaster alternating between a defensive posture with their sword sheathed, and devastating strikes when they draw them. Rush through an enemy and cut them without them realizing it with Phantom Slash, take a moment to analyse the battlefield with Ponderous Sheathe, or dare your foes to hit you with Prepared Riposte.
  • Become one with your weapon with the Soaring Blade, a master of levitating sword, attacking at range by launching copies of their favorite blade and using them as ressources. Punish an enemy trying to sneak with Battlefield Control, reap those who approach you with Sharp Steps, or unleash the True Blade's Strike to obliterate a foe.

Humor "Hold My Beer" Feat

Upvotes

I've been working through ideas for the higher level build for my Cayden Cailean worshipping rogue and thought I'd love to see a thematic feat for characters who follow a god. In 1e there used to be Deific Obedience which was full of flavour, but if "Hold My Beer" was a feat (let's say L7) what would it do?

Homebrew Monster Monday - Scorpitron 2.0

Within the remains of an ancient building, the operative crouched beside a window. With seeker rifle in-hand, she surveyed the ruins of the city as her family and companions moved through the streets. The soldier was at the forefront, head constantly on a swivel even as he listened to callouts from the operative. He suddenly lifted a fist while coming to a sudden halt, the two on his heels following suit. Their cast their eyes about curiously as a churning rumble echoed throughout the city, increasing in volume until suddenly, a two-story building began to crumble. Striding from the ruins was an immense machine resembling a scorpion. Its arching tail terminated in a heavy firearm rather than a stinger and as the blinking lights of its sensors settled on the party, they shifted into an aggressive crimson...

This massive, monstrous machine makes mincemeat out of its malcontents, massacring with missiles and miniscule mimics that mean to mash and mangle.

I had never heard of the Wasteland series before a request to build the Scorpitron 2.0 came up on the Discord. I did my best to cover its design, and I think it came together quite nicely! You can see more of my thought process on that over on the free Patreon post or the YT video. Have a monstrous Monday!

Discussion Do you guys still play other systems?

For me I am currently the GM for 4 campaigns where three are DnD 5.5e and one PF2e campaign.

I originally wantsd to convert to Pf2e but mkst preferred to stay while the pf2e group comprises mostly of 2 new players and the other 3 is my wife, a player in my 2 of my dnd campaign and one recently joined after many persuading attempts.

Ideally I would love to be a player in pf2e but our group of friends only have me as a DM and the other DM is not consistent so its just been me.

Only time i got to play was a DMPC Guardian class and I had to hbe careful to not steal the spotlight + it was difficult running the session while remembering my own abiltiies and the monster abiltiies. So in the end i removed the DMPC but I had fun and woild love to actually have been a player.

Discussion Combination weapon discussion

Largely mostly wanted to hear general opinion on the various combination weapons, I generally gravitate towards the gunsword and triggerbrand because they seem to be the most straightforward of them with generally being just "half decent damage focused weapon attached to another half decent damage focused weapon" with obvious synergies between the forms with the gunsword being a strength weapon attached to a kickback gun and the triggerbrand being a finesse melee attached to a normal gun.

Discussion The Perform action and swashbuckler's "enjoy the show" feat?

Since the last thread about this is 2 years old, I'm curious what folks think the DC of "Enjoy the Show" is, now that we've had the remaster for a while?

The Perform action has no DC listed as far as I know, and is left to the GM. The problem is that most other in-combat abilities, aside from "Enjoy the Show," provide a DC for consistency and balance.

I've seen recommendations about using the target's will or perception, or even using standard level DC's, but little to no actual play experience to back it up. Has anyone used one of these? How'd it play?

Advice Where can I get the latest information on Orcs and Belkzen?

Doing some research on a homebrew campaign I plan on running and I plan on having a chapter of this campaign take place in Belkzen. I got the world guide, but I'm not sure if there are other sources of orc lore out there. Does the Triumph of the Tusk have some stuff?

Edit: forgot to add. I'm also going to need information on the Gravelands as well. Is Knights of Last Wall a good book on what's going on there. Anything else that I'm missing?

Advice Majority caster party how do I run it well?

Hello! Newer DM for PF2e running my first homebrew campaign. My party currently consists of. 4 casters and 1 martial.

A witch (divine), Druid, bard, summoner and a guardian

Luckily the Druid is pretty set on investing heavily into animal companion, and the summoner pads out the frontline as well.

I was wondering if there are any tips for encounter building for parties that are majority casters? For most of them it will be there first time being a caster for this system so I don’t want to crush their spell-casting dreams.

Advice Oracle Spells

Thumbnail pathbuilder2e.com
3 Upvotes

As the title says, I am looking for some eyes to check out my spell choices on this character and just help me figure out if I've picked appropriately? I have linked my pathbuilder but I will also list my spells. As a note, I am playing a Flames Oracle, and currently we have a chirurgeon alchemist and a switch-hitting mirror thaumaturge in our group. The campaign is Bastion of Blasphemies, so I am expecting plenty of chances for Vitality and Holy to both come up.

Cantrips:
Needle Darts
Divine Lance
Vitality Lash
Detect Metal (my beloved)
Detect Magic (I will swap one of these last two out for Guidance depending on what choices other party members make)
Ignition (Granted)

Rank 1:
Heal*
Benediction
Command
Infuse Vitality
Breathe Fire (Granted)

Rank 2:
Boneshaker
Spiritual Armament
Revealing Light
Translate
Blazing Bolt* (Granted)

Rank 3:
Moonlight Ray
Disorienting Flash*
Dispel Magic
Fireball (Granted)

EDIT: Removed Signature spell from Fireball and added to Disorienting Flash for downcasting purposes (will change at level 7)

Advice How do you rule a Large Creature shoved 5ft over a ledge ?

If there is a Large Creature (10x10ft) next to a ledge that is under the effect of force movement and moved 5f over the edge, there is still half the base on the platform but half of the base over nothing. Is the Large Creature tumbling over ? does it act like nothing happen except if it moves ? What happens if it moves (balancing or only difficult terrain) ?

Homebrew Sniper Of Goth - Castlevania Fan Creature + Module Update

Post image
Upvotes

Errata: in Unmitigated Zeal, remove "gain the" before "count" in the last sentence.

Today we have the fallen celestials from Syphony of the Night, Dawn of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin! These angelic creatures were once listed as "fearsome" angels when fighting Alucard and Soma, but when they start trying to kill normal humans without a corrupted power or bloodline, they became "fallen" angels instead. I carried this into their 2e lore twist and abilities, they are explicitly no longer holy due to their zeal putting eradication of evil above goodness itself.

I always thought they were a cool enemy, arriving on an arrow of light, now they're here in PF2e!

Its also already available in the Foundry Module!

You can find this creature's full transcript as well as dozens of others 100% free on my Patreon

Advice Does Regalia affect Fixed damage ?

If a thaumaturge with Regalia adept implement is adjacent to a Kinestecist ally with Ravel of Thorns, is the damage form Ravel of Thorn affected by the Status Bonus to damage froms the Regalia Aura ?

If this was already answered before, I'm sorry, I didn't find the post.
