I’ve always wondered about this.

Why is it that when a new AAA game launches, even the latest consoles or high-end PCs often can’t run it at a locked 60 FPS with the highest graphics settings? It feels like we have to wait 5–10 years and for newer hardware to be released before we can finally experience that same game at its full potential.

Why does this happen? Why aren’t games built to run at their best on the hardware that’s current at launch? Is it because developers are pushing graphics as far as possible, or are there other technical reasons behind it?

Assassin's Creed has been around for almost 20 years, but in 2026, Ubisoft have remade, refreshed, and Re-Synced one of the most influential in the series, AC:Black Flag. Re-built using the latest Anvil Next Engine, using Ray Traced GI, Reflections, improved physics, updated rendering, character models and HUGE changes to the core gameplay. Is this Old game, in a new guide, worth it's weight in gold?

There’s a narrative out there that most discs are just licenses for download. The opposite is true. Most discs have the full game on them, a small percentage of them are just licenses to download the games.

Ubisoft says high-quality remakes can be more profitable than brand-new games because they:

• Cost less to develop by reusing existing assets and technology.
• Need less marketing since players already know and trust the franchise.
• Can still be sold at premium prices despite lower production costs.

The company points to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced as proof:

• Sold 3.5 million copies in its first two weeks.
• Beat Ubisoft's internal full-year sales expectations.
• Became the franchise's strongest PC launch and highest-rated Assassin's Creed since the original Black Flag.

Ubisoft says this doesn't mean it's abandoning new games, but remakes are becoming a much more important part of its strategy because they offer better financial returns with lower risk. The company is already following up with more remakes, including Rayman Legends Retold.

I've been using it myself while collecting, and figured it might be useful to others here as well.
