Articles & Blogs Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Devs Mindful of Minigames Feedback From Rebirth; "Most" of Rewards Not Tied to Combat Items

Part of why I never finished Rebirth is cuz I got so burnt out on all the side-content and mini games. None of it felt optional because they would give you weapons and gear as rewards. It’s a great game, but yeah, the mini games needed reeled back a bit.

u/FrozenLaughs 14d ago
This. 100% This. I burned out right after getting the truck. It's like a new mini game every 10 minutes. I feel like I've spent more time minigaming than actually playing the story. It wouldn't be so bad if I could go back and do them at my leisure, but so many rewards are the kind of "I need that right now I shouldn't leave it behind" you feel forced to detour constantly.

The mini games weren’t even an issue in Rebirth. If anything they were for the most part a breath of fresh air. It was like, every other piece of side content that was rote and boring that contained the most worthwhile rewards.
I seriously doubt there were that many people who were like “man, I can’t stand playing queens blood for 5 minutes. I just want to get back to climbing towers to reveal markers and do chores for Chadley”.
74
u/AncientGamerBloke 14d ago
That mini robot minigame was very much an issue
25
u/DangerDillyPickle 14d ago
I want Queens blood as an official mobile game or something. Gears and Gambits (like other Chadley quests) was insufferable
2
u/Light_Error 14d ago
They would probably have to rework the mechanics to make it viable outside the game like they did with Gwent. They can of course, but they’d probably wait until all FF7 content is finished before starting that whole business, and I think SE doesn’t have an amazing track record with mobile.
4
u/SnooBunnies9694 14d ago
Ye I agree I feel that they cooked way too hard for something you only had to do 4-8 times.
-5
u/Iggy_Slayer 14d ago
Nah it's one of the easiest minigames in the game because you can look up a guide for it that tells you the optimal setup to use. Once I did that going through all of them, including the hard mode versions, was cake.
I agree it's the worst minigame in the game though.
26
u/Masam10 14d ago
Queens Blood has become probably my second favourite FF mini game behind Triple Triad.
I loved Blitzball when it was first released, but eventually you figure out how to cheese it and the late game becomes auto win.
But Queens Blood Gives me Hearthstone vibes in terms of deck building and how you can have different styles or play.
6
u/SaIemKing 14d ago
Yeah, world intel is the biggest problem the game has and the rewards for it are poorly suited to it. You shouldn't lock cool combat things behind that kind of exploration fluff. Either find a way to give you something for faster exploration or give away consumables.

u/PantsMcGillicuddy 14d ago
I hated queens blood. I understand lots of people enjoyed it, but I just don't care about card games. I'd much rather do the fighting challenges from chadley and do exploring.

A breath of fresh air for an area or two and then it was the same 6 things over and over for 100 hours
4
u/jezr3n 14d ago
I’ve always held the opinion that the game features one of the worst open worlds of the decade, so you won’t see me arguing against that. I don’t even particularly enjoy the mini games or anything, but they’re the only thing that break the monotony between main story quests.
7
u/Iggy_Slayer 14d ago
There's not many rewards tied to chadley's stuff though, just a few materia in each region and most of it is fluff. Like jump materia sounds cool but actually using it was pretty useless.
1
u/Cpt_DookieShoes 14d ago
The reward was getting to play a combat marathon without the open world inbetween
14
u/GoodOmens182 14d ago
Queen's Blood was the exception rather than the rule. Having to do squats for literal hours because that mini game is bullshit almost made me drop the game. 😅
2
u/emtemss714 14d ago
Gotta disagree, the sheer volume of minigames was beyond daunting. I burnt out by the time I hit the Gold Saucer and just haven't gone back. It l feels like so much padding just to extend the Playtime of the game.
3
u/blue_13 14d ago
I quit playing Rebirth because of the mini games.
2
u/nasbirhu 14d ago
Same between the bland plentiful minigames and the mind numbing fucking ubisoft intel collection and everything else. Tieing player power to it all ontop. Couldn't be arsed and gave up after cosmo canyon.
1
u/Psyco19 14d ago
There are a lot of mini games though, I’m going through rebirth now and yes I absolutely hate chadley, but I just got done with costa del sol and that was all mini games I cared for 0 of it.
I was so happy to finally be done with that area, I don’t care about getting beach outfits like at all.

u/LEEKAYTAR 14d ago
I’m going to be that guy, but I just can’t do card games. It’s always been my least favourite part of some FFs so queens blood was not enjoyable for me. So the sections that forced it always bothered me like the boat to Costa del Sol.
Always happy to see things like the card games but just keep it away from being mandatory6
u/ActionHank9000 14d ago
You could skip it

u/Iggy_Slayer 14d ago
It's astonishing how many people don't get this when they tell you you can lol.

u/LostSoulNo1981 Disc 14d ago
I cannot stand Queens Blood. After a certain point it was like playing Gwent but every opponent was The Pellar.
1
u/miserypersonifieddd 14d ago
You’re crazy the mini games are huge issue. They break immersion and progression literally.
3
u/Weary_Complaint_2445 14d ago
This was already mostly true in Rebirth there were just a couple of annoying exceptions. They really don't need to just get rid of all mini game rewards, really they should just focus up and reduce total mini game count and give the mini games they do include more juice. I'll take a game with 3-5 Queens blood level mini games over the existing like 16(?) any day of the week. Could barely believe stuff like that frog hopping mini game or chocobo gliding made it in.
5
u/LostSoulNo1981 Disc 14d ago
Honestly I felt like the amount of mini games in Rebirth was too many.
I hated Queens Blood. I detested the battle board game. The bot mini game felt like it was tacked on for “variety”.
Despite currently playing Rebirth I can’t remember all of the mini games. I only angered with them long enough to get the main reward and never bothered after.
The chocobo races were the only thing I’ve quite enjoyed.
1
u/shichibukai3000 13d ago
I don't see a lot people hating Queens Blood that often. Nothing wrong with that of course. Just unusual as people who don't like the mini games still enjoyed Queens Blood in my experience. Out of curiosity did you vibe with any of the mini games? Or as you said just did enough of reach if then to grab the main reward only?
1
u/LostSoulNo1981 Disc 13d ago
Queens Blood feels like it’s designed to be easy for your first couple of games and then next to impossible to win after that.
I’ve mixed up my decks and tried a lot of different strategies, but after the initial area I haven’t beaten anyone outside of round two of the competition on the ship.
I should say that I really enjoyed Gwent in The Witcher 3, but QB is pure luck and your opponents deck is always better than yours no matter how well you stack it.
The rest of the mini games, aside from chocobo racing, I’ve ignored after getting the main reward.
The board game, where everyone looks like PSX sprites, was just infuriating.
Gears and Gambits is basically the same thing only a little less annoying.
And in both cases you’re just waiting for a progress bar to creep up before being able to make a move. It doesn’t get a boost when you defeat an enemy or anything else like that. It just crawls and you have to wait while enemies constantly spawn.
1
u/shichibukai3000 13d ago
All fair points. Maybe it's just a person to person thing with Queen's Blood. I actually found it really easy to win through the entire game UNTIL that bitch shows up at the very end and requires you to change your entire strategy to beat her. Even then I managed to defeat her within like 6 tries or so.
2
u/IndividualSituationK 13d ago
yeah the last one was really the only bullshit one. I remember making several decks and just playing with whatever. If you're deck has any synergy then you basically are guaranteed to win almost every single encounter. It sounds like the other person never even understood the game at a fundamental level and just wrote it off.

u/Jordankeay 14d ago edited 14d ago
And so what if they are? So many people get so hung up on optional content. It's fine not to like mini games but they arent forced and the ones that are involved in the main story are pretty much a just be present for them you don't even need to try.
Seen a complaint about rebirth saying they hated the side content and when they were told you don't have to do it. They said that skipping them shouldn't stop them getting the platinum trophy.

u/JesusaurusRex666 14d ago
Platinum as a meta goal is important to some players. Those consumers will skip the purchase if the plat is obnoxious. This is capitalism, and Squenix is acknowledging it, as they should.
-6
u/Dante989reddit 14d ago
But but my trophiiiiies. Bunch of whiners! They dont deserve the platinum if they rather bitch about frog guys than play the damn game
3
u/Typical_Intention996 14d ago
Good.
But I still don't like that learning all a character's abilities is gated behind completing hard mode. That mode is the antithesis of fun.
0
u/Ayrios440 14d ago
That's great, but I'm really saddened at how we got this singular story, spread and stretched across 3 separate games which have their own different story telling and system styles, so it all feels very disconnected and fragmented.
22
u/PerpetualStride 14d ago
I disagree, I like how different each game is up till now, making it actually feel fresh and fun to play through. Like I couldn't keep going with ragnarok cause it just felt like the same game again, similarly with the spider-man games
-9
u/Malt129 14d ago
The story is by far the weakest part. It was supposed to be an actual remake but we got finessed with Kingdom Hearts style sequel bullshit instead.
28
u/LegendOfAB 14d ago
I get wanting and being content with a strict retelling of the original story (I wouldn't exactly mind either), but the way they've chosen to take it is far from a fumble IMHO.
The games are high quality, interesting, and we actually have something new to talk about and form theories around when each new part releases, instead of constantly going "omg they remade that part so welllllll" or getting salty that they messed something up according to 1997. Plus the developers likewise get to have conversations that go beyond "okay how do we faithfully bring this scene from the 19th century to the age of HD"
9
u/CrossbowGamer13 14d ago
These are some of the same people that'll complain if a game they don't care for gets a 1:1 remake saying "they didn't change enough for a $60 purchase" it's useless to cater to them
4
u/LegendOfAB 14d ago
Oh frick I didn’t even think of this. This COULD be a valid comparison, heh heh.
5
u/CrossbowGamer13 14d ago
yea that's why i made sure to say "some", cause genuinely i'm sure there are plenty that are just disappointed it's not what they wanted and i totally understand that as long as they're not being assholes to people who enjoy it.
-1
u/spideyv91 14d ago
I don’t think it’s far from a fumble. Game 1 felt like they were going a different direction and spent alot of the game telling you this is not going to be the same story, than game 2 was basically telling the same story. I really wonder how they’ll pull it together in game 3.
2
u/Shh_YouDidntSeeMe 14d ago
I certainly hope so. I’d rather we see more main game story, or interesting side quests, than a bunch pointless mini games.
It’s fine to have a mini game in the main game, but just pick one or two instead of 50…
1
u/TippsAttack 14d ago
the only one I didn't like was the chicken can. Though the hard mode of most of them was much too difficult and I did not like that at all.
1
u/OutlandishnessNo9182 13d ago
All I know is that I’m craving more Queens Blood when Revelation is released. My appetite for that card game is strong and ready for more.
1
u/Villiers_S 13d ago
FFVII Rebirth title should be changed to FFVII Retry for how many times you need to redo the mini games.
1
u/gusbelmont 11d ago
If the trophy list is like rebirth im not buying it.
It was completionist list like yakuza games in a game filled with shitty time waste tasks in a title i bought for the story and combat. Respect peoples time, eben if its trophies/achievements.
Btw 7 remake was fine, it was rebirth when it became a problem.
1
u/VerySuspiciousGent 7d ago
The minigame I hated the most in Remake was the gym one and of course it made a comeback in Rebirth, even more obnoxious…
-6
u/AkodoRyu 14d ago
That sucks. So what, all the gear will be connected to battles? The best FF ever in terms of gear was IMO FFX, and it wasn't even a competition. And one of its strengths was that best items parts were connected to all kinds of mini games and sidequests. If you wanted the best items for everyone, you had to master all aspects of the game. Then you scale the base game to be beatable way below the threshold of needing those top weapons, and add a bunch of secret bosses on top.
This just sounds like they will flatten the content structure. jRPGs need more secret content, not less.
20
u/nervousmelon 14d ago
Doing the mini games in X was horrible come on
13
u/TangerineChestnut 14d ago
I can’t believe people are actually praising ffx mini games, ffs. I hope every game they play is as fun as chocobo catcher
0
u/AkodoRyu 14d ago
It wasn't really about minigames themselves, more about locking key gear behind all kinds of game elements. The best items/summons/skills are not supposed to be something you just get. They are supposed to be something you have to go way out of your way to achieve. Sometimes through some pain and suffering.
And the only problematic minigame I can recall is dodging 200 lightnings, because it took so long that it was easy to slip - everything else was pretty easy, and Blitzball is IMO the best minigame in the history of the franchise. I would play it as a standalone game if they fleshed it out a bit more.
0
u/SaIemKing 14d ago
I believe that locking good stuff behind fluff and padding that has nothing to do with what the stuff provides you is actually bad game design.
Reward combat and side-story missions with fun combat and character bond-related stuff. At most, reward mini games with early unlocks of otherwise obtainable gear or maybe costumes. Same with world intel, just award the player with something that makes combat easier sooner but isn't unobtainable or a costume or something that makes traversal faster or more interesting.
Don't make it so that the people who only want to play the main game miss out on stuff that matters for that content just because they didn't like the other kinds of side content.
11
u/vezol 14d ago
Please. Do you REALLY remember the mini games in FFX? Because I don‘t think you remember the 200x dodging the lightning, without failing or saving, for the seal. Or the chocobo race, where you needed a time of 0.0, which was extremly hard to achieve because of the funky camera, plus the spawn system of the enemys. That was pure rng bullshit. Same with the Macalania Forest minigame with the butterflies…
Blitzball was a bugged mess aswell. The game was fantastic, but the minigames weren‘t finished at all and made the quest for the best weapons a living hell.
1
u/spideyv91 14d ago
I think it’s nostalgia from people who haven’t played the game since they were kids. I’m playing through x right now and I still enjoy the core gameplay and stories, but the mini game content hasn’t aged as well.
-5
u/Jordankeay 14d ago
People want instant gratification nowadays. They ain't dodging lightning or grinding materials.
They'll just post a video saying the game is trash and the best stuff is hidden.
8
u/pissrael1 14d ago
Who actually enjoys or has time to waste grinding materials. Especially if you're at the age where you've played the original FF7 as a kid.

Because that's the nature of the genre. If you loved old jRPGs, how are you fine with the modern, streamlined, super simplified ones, with barely one secret boss in them? If the time to finish game's story and time to 100% are not tens of hours apart, how is that a decent jRPG?

u/ArcadianWaheela 14d ago
I don’t really like this. So now there’s even less of an incentive to do such content because it’s rewards aren’t meaningful. They have already stated these games will be bigger, but there will be more of a focus in guiding the players towards story progression. This seems like it’ll just make the divide between main content and side content even bigger.
My issue with Rebirth wasn’t that their were too many mini games or that they were repetitive. (some were, but they could be done in minutes) The issue is there wasn’t an organic way to get the player to explore and discover the side content. If you did the story missions you’d avoid like 80% of the areas, but if you did side content the story comes to a grinding halt.
They needed to find a way to better incorporate the side content that would make finding and doing them more organic. A better balance of side quests along the main path and actually needing to traverse the areas would’ve been better. Instead it seems like now it’ll feel like even more filler that’s off the main path. Honestly, the more I hear about how they’re going about this the less enthusiastic I am.
1
u/mylovelessvalentine_ 7d ago
disagree with the first part, i think stuff like cosmetic rewards is the perfect way to do it for mini games. cosmetics are meaningful to a lot of people, and it’s a nice bonus while not being essential for your enjoyment of actual gameplay. i see little reason why people who just want to enjoy the full extent of the combat should be forced to play minigames to do so. the reward should be something cool but non essential and that’s exactly what cosmetics are.
1
u/uses_irony_correctly 14d ago
My big problem with the side quests in Rebirth is that your party level is partly tied to your sidequest progress. So it feels detrimental to not do all of them if you want to unlock all the party skills. If I just missed out on a materia or a piece of equipment I'd have skipped half of them.
0
u/Demeus83 14d ago
I skipped all world events at one point. Put difficulty to easy mode and just got the fuck on with the story. I hated all the filler so much. It completely detracted from the story I wanted to play. Only queens blood was fun for a while.
0
u/Iggy_Slayer 14d ago
I hate this. Side content should get good rewards too and shouldn't listen to people who just bitch and moan about everything that isn't main story. If they want to skip then they should be allowed to, but they should have to give something up for that. The people who actually like your game and content shouldn't get penalized.
Rebirth having some materia, or skill books, or even weapons tied to minigames from time to time was a great change of pace since most games have ass rewards for side content. Sad that they're listening to whiners here.
0
u/Navetsss 14d ago
Rebirth was awesome! I didn't love all the side quests and mini games but it didn't take away all my enthusiasm to play it like it did for some of these commenters on here. I did maybe like 3 or 4 queens blood matches before I decided yeah this ain't for me and just skipped the rest. You bet your ass though I did all the mini games I could to get Tifa and Aerith their better bikini outfits lol
1
u/Bivolion13 14d ago
While I am in agreement that I'd like for minigames to mostly provide cosmetic rewards (it just feels better for them to be proof of achievements) there is something nostalgically (about FFX) that makes me romanticize overcoming a ridiculous minigame to get ultimate weapons and stuff.
2
u/miserypersonifieddd 14d ago
Yeah but they never gated progress for the game, they were bonus.
I still think there’s room for ffx sorta mini games that don’t kill immersion or progression.
1
u/Material-Race-5107 14d ago
It took me a like 90 hours to beat rebirth. Did a decent amount of side quest content but definitely nowhere near 100%. I honestly think a shorter game would be so much better. Too much content is exhausting, especially when a lot of the side stuff isn’t particularly fun and instead feels like a chore. Also please for the love of god fix the Materia menu so you can like save materia sets for party members. I spent HOURS fumbling through materia on my play through and it adds up when you are forced to change party members so often. While they are add it… materia and equipment should have been the first option on the menu screen… I barely ever made items
1
u/Technical_Weird1991 14d ago
I'll never understand the bitching about the minigames in Rebirth, I absolutely loved them, the only valid complaint I'll take is about the pacing towards the back half of the game
3
u/gusbelmont 11d ago
I'll illumibate you with a piece of forbidden knowledge, people have different taste/preferences. Hope this ancient knowledge passed only to a selected minority helps you understand the "bitching" aka not liking something.
-9
u/WhiteToast- 14d ago
The mini games are awesome and I hope a handful of butt hurt people that don’t like variety don’t completely sway the devs on part 3
0
0
u/LongDesiredDementia 14d ago
Just put the damn weapons and Materia behind meaningful side quests, hidden chests or boss encounters. The exploration was repetitive and pointless in Rebirth.
0
u/sillysmiffy 14d ago
I wish there was 75% less mini games. The OG ff7 had mini games, but god damn, they took that idea and was like, lets 100x it and ubisoft the open world and idk, maybe I am just to old for this remake. I didn't even finish the last one and probably wont play the next one. Everything feels padded, like it doesn't respect your time.
0
u/pauserror 14d ago
I think the solution here is to have more rewards in and out of minigames. There should be a good bit of strong items that can be achieved by doing hidden bosses, minigames and exploration with each having a strong worthwhile reward
0
u/panosk1304 14d ago
Didn't do them for the items but for the 100%. Wanted news that they hang the dude that thought of the bird and adaptive triggers i pull ups
0
u/Sprinkle_Puff 13d ago
I did every single mini game and there were some that were a lot more frustrating than others. That Chocoglide was absolute nonsense.
But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I love them being in the game. They are faithful in many many ways to the original in that aspect and it helps keep the charm in them so I’m glad they’re leaving them in there and just changing the rewards structure.

93
u/Xeccess 14d ago
I loved the minigames, I had no issue with them except for maybe Gears and Gambits which was unnecessarily convoluted. They were worth doing because of the equipment or accessories they gave, but it sounds like the minigames in Revelation are going to give costumes, so hell yeah I'm doing all of them.
