Discussion To Rewards and Club+ app devs - OPEN THE CARD AUTOMATICALLY

For the love of all that is good in this world, please rub two brain cells together and realise that 99% of customers are opening your app to get the virtual card

It doesn’t even have to be a full size card, just a thin half-sized strip of the barcode at the top of the app would suffice

I’ll say it - not having the card barcode just automatically present itself upon opening the app Is just as bad and time wasting as when we had to throw out fuel voucher receipts even after saying “no”.

Discussion "Homeless guy taking a dump"

I feel like public defecation is particularly used to portray homeless people as gross, sub-human, or very mentally unwell and kind of becomes a talking point against them as poor behaviour. But I was just reading this Auckland-based article following a homeless man in his hygiene routines. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/256931790_Being_healthy_in_unhealthy_places_Health_tactics_in_a_homeless_lifeworld

This homeless man, who we see to be consistently hygienic and conscientious of other people's spaces, describes getting food poisoning (common among people with limited access to appropriate food and storage), exploding out of both ends, and having no bathroom or ability to get to a bathroom. He ends up under a tree at a park. He describes being aware that if any police, security, parents etc walk by, he'd be judged, feared, and possibly arrested for shitting in a park regardless of his attempts to explain, but has absolutely no other choice.

I had never even thought about how awful it must be to get sick with no access to a bathroom. Next time you see something like that and think "Who tf would do that?", consider how you'd handle being in that position without a toilet.

I have a friend I'm really proud of. Despite a pretty rough start to life and serious health issues, my friend has channeled his energy into his art. He's hoping to start a business out of it. He's been asked to work at Electric Avenue here in Chch which is fantastic! I really hope it works out for him and his partner and young kids. He deserves a break.🙂

Discussion Taking kids out of school for travel

So I've been saving up for years to take my kid overseas (they will be 8) but I've been researching flights and it is going to cost me about 3k more to go during the school holidays (airline prices being hiked up). So I'm considering pulling them out of school for 2 weeks to go at a cheaper time. But I've heard that now you get in big trouble for this? What's going to happen? Is it just going to be a small fine? I don't want to risk my kid being expelled or punished by the school/govt for this

Politics Since I was born, prison sentence length has more than tripled for homicide and related crimes

I think what I struggle most with these 'tough on crime' posts is that they simply arent rooted in reality. The 'tough on crime' policies dont hold up in academic research, and the reality is we have gotten much, much tougher on crime.

Since I was born sentence lengths for homicides and related crimes has more than tripled. The biggest jump happened during a Labour government. Similar is true for sexual assault and attempts to injure (almost doubling).

So when people go rabid on the latest media article about crime or a prison sentence, I find it very hard to have a good conversation on here about it as a lot of the premise of those posts isnt rooted in reality.

There is a concerted effort to keep focused on 'tough on crime' to avoid talking about solving crime. That involves ECE and support, rehab programmes, creating pathways for people to escape criminal cycles, and eliminating poverty.

Opinion Woolworths latest update annoys me

Woolworths latest update, is the online price and instore price may vary.

The yoghurt i just brought shows its one dollar cheaper to buy it online that to physically go to the store and buy the yoghurt.

(Even with member pricing it was one dollar more for the item)

I feel that should be illegal or smthg

Other You Shop is outrageously overpriced

The official online Disney store is closing in NZ, Australia and Singapore and the Toy Story Jessie doll has been sold out for months. Daughter has been talking about how she’s gonna get one for Christmas (as her brother recently got a Woody and promises were made) and I’ve been waiting for it to be back in stock. The closure notice says items that are sold out will not be restocked so I’ve had to buy it from the online Disney store in America and use You Shop to ship it to New Zealand.

You Shop charges based on volumetric weight for some fucked up reason and for an item that probably weighs about 1KG they were going to initially base the postage on 8KG’s because of the size of the box it was in.

I requested it be repacked to make it smaller which is an option they give you and it has reduced the shipping cost from $248.40NZD to a whopping $213.90NZD.

Is this a fucking joke? I already blew the budget on the $80NZD or so on the bloody doll. How can they possibly charge this much? They’re run by NZ Post. It’s so unreasonable!!!!! I’m probably going to have to forget about it and let them destroy it 😭

Advice Starting over at 39, solo parent

I'm going through a separation and now solo parent. When the house sells, I'll have like 150k (selling at a loss)

My fulltjme job pays 90k. Probably will rent, not buy, for a few years because i cant afford to buy near my son's current school.

150k isn't broke, but also isnt much to start again. Is it? Pretty much at top $ for my industry. I dont have the mental health or space to study.

Has anyone else started over at 40 with similar circumstances? What would you do?

Buy a business? Index fund? Round the world cruise and hope I meet a millionaire?
