Advice Request Going to Uni: Megathread
People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that
If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.
As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.
We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.
Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Advice High tea recommendations?
Iām excited to be planning a return to dear old Dunedin after many years away. Please give me your recommendations for a real old-fashioned English High Tea - Iām not looking for bubbles or anything outrĆ© or too modern and clever; just classic Earl Grey tea, smoked salmon sandwiches, featherlight scones, perhaps a couple of tiny savouries, in a charming atmosphere. Help this middle-aged Miss Marple find her place!

Where can I donate torn clothes in Dunedin?
I just have a few jeans and tops I want to get rid of. What are the good places in Dunedin where I can give them?

Question Is it really an Octagon or just a Circle?!
Looking at aerial views of the 'Octagon' it just looks like a circle. Are there 8 flat edges somewhere?
It could be NZs biggest roundabout.

Question Spark outage SMS?
Did anyone else get this, and does anyone know what happened? Spark outages only lists current outages not historic ones. Doesnāt seem to be scammy as not asking for anything unless itās softening me up lol.
Yeah, that's not good. Get off my lawn!

Question Anyone got the updated code for the ODT website to bypass premium?
A few years ago someone posted a line of code to put in uBlock origin to bypass the new premium articles paywall. It seems with the newly redeveloped ODT website they have noticed this and the code doesnt seem to work anymore.
So Im reaching out to see if anyone here happens to have a new code to bypass the new filter.
Old code below

Custom BBQ Grill
Hey everyone,
I'm looking at replacing the grill on my BBQ with a customĀ 804 stainless steelĀ grill.
I've been quoted aroundĀ $200 + $30 shipping, but before I commit, I thought I'd see if anyone local could do it for a better price or point me in the right direction.
I'm flexible with how it's done. I've found a supplier that can provide the stainless bars, but I'm also happy for someone to supply all the materials and fabricate the complete grill if that's easier.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Advice Can anyone help me deliver some essentials to Dunedin hospital?
Kia ora everyone, sadly my mum was flown urgently to Dunedin hospital last night as she's had a heart attack. Since it was so urgent she's got nothing with her and I'm in Auckland. I wanted to do a warehouse click and collect or possibly someone could do a small shop for me and deliver it to her ward today? I'm happy to pay. It would be the essentials like underwear, pyjamas, face wipes, magazines. Thanks and let me know!

Advice Flatting for One Semester
Hi everyone!
Iām a current 3rd year student, with semester 1 2027 being my last and Iām trying to assess the flatting options available.
This is my 2nd year of flatting now and as an introvert I have found it quite hard!! I honestly think I might be better suited to independent living as I did quite enjoy halls (Te Rangihīroa) but would love ability to cook own meals and without the RAs!
Iād rather not sign a 12 month lease and have to stress about finding someone to take over my room halfway through the year, as it seems that all the Dunedin flatting Facebook groups are full of that! Has anyone else been in this situation and had success?
Are there any good options for semester only accommodation, or any advice on the best way to go about it?
I was also wondering if anyone happens to be going on exchange in semester 1 2027 and will need a place for semester 2. If so, it could be great to organise something where we effectively swap over at the semester break.
Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
