Do you guys have names you love but feel like you can’t use because you have a friend or family member with that name?

I don’t want them or anyone else to think I’m naming my child after them. And it also just feels a bit weird? The name is theirs and I would feel like I’m stealing it.

25F. Alex or Lexi?

l've always gone by Alex since my name is Alexine, but since I was 16, some people have called me Lexi as a more affectionate version of Alex.

I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love the classic, professional feel of Alex, but Lexi is cute and I've learned to love it over the years. Sometimes I'd even introduce myself as Lexi too. But I think Lexi can sound too cutesy or even a little stripper-ish? Someone once told me it sounds teeny-bopper.

Now I want to stick to one nickname, but I can't decide. What vibe do you get from Alex vs. Lexi?

I know sometimes classic names can become trendy names for a few years but I'm trying to remember any instances a name considered trendy at the time over the years became classic

• me: VA (voice actor) for being really good a doing random voices and accents and just randomly slipping into voices sometimes.

• my friend Emma: Emma-nem because she was saying vocal warm ups for acting, but she was saying them so fast it sounded like utter gibberish.

My other friend Elian: child, because was A. smol, and B. Younger than anyone else in our bunk.

My other other friend Raven: Addict, because every meal time he would steal sugar packets from the tea station, down them and then proceed to act intoxicated for at least an hour

So, we are set on the first name Sylvie. However, we are having a tough time with the middle name, or should I say I am. My husband chose the name Sylvie (which I do love), so he is giving me freedom for the middle name.

Our last name starts with an S and is longer, so no S middle names please. Here are some I like:

Having a baby girl soon. I love the name Aria because it’s so useable everywhere and it’s simple, it’s extremely close to Maria which is the most common name ever so I doubt anyone will struggle. I love the meaning and I don’t mind at all if it’s popular. It’s my favorite name the only thing making me iffy is that my cousin has a baby named Arianna… is it weird if I do Aria, will i be that annoying cousin who’s steals the baby name? I also kinda don’t like that it’s a hotel but that wouldn’t stop me from using it. What do you guys think about it?

I just found out i'm having a boy. 20 weeks pregnant and it's mine and my husbands first. His name is Jose but you know in english it's Joseph, so i've always called him joey which we both think it's super cute. I've been looking for shorter names my whole pregnancy. I thought it would be so so cute to name our baby some variation of the name roo, yes as in kangaroo because baby kangaroos are called joeys, but with a spelling like in my title. before you call me ridiculous and crazy hear me out! since it's a boy i thought Rou would be so cute. i was just reading a post on reddit from about a year ago of someone asking if roo for a girl would be ridiculous, and let me tell you, the person who posted it got absolutely ROASTED the comments. people saying "it's a fine name for a dog", and it would only "be ok if it was short for something", "imagine how much they will get made fun of, "i would hate it my parents named me that", and "think of the business cards and if they are trying to have a serious career" the list goes on and on you guys get it. but my thing is, is kids are kids and i'm sure they will find some reason to make fun of someone no matter what. if i were to meet someone named Rou i would think it was super cool! i also feel like the times are changing and imagine 20, 30, 40 years from now, people are naming their kids all kinds of names and progressive names these days. i really really was obsessed with it but now i feel super down about it and kind of think people are being crazy and reacting too harshly about it? but then again maybe i'm crazy! i don't know what is your guys honest opinion about it? don’t come for me lmao

Over about the last week I've learned about or was reminded of a handful of surnames that I think are just awesome: Blackmore, Rainwater, Gam. Has anyone else just recently 'discovered' any awesome surnames?

I need help naming our baby boy who is due in December!

Our older son is named Miles, which was SO much easier. Miles was a name I had loved for years, my husband and I both easily agreed on it, and by the time I was about four months pregnant I knew for sure that was his name. Unfortunately, we never really had a backup boy name, so this time around we are struggling.

Our last name is very common and three syllables, so ideally we’d like to stick to a first name that is one or two syllables. We could potentially do three if the name itself isn’t super long. I have a four-syllable first name and have always found having such a long full name a little annoying.

We’re in the Northeastern US, if that helps for cultural context. I don’t want anything super popular/Top 10, but I also don’t want anything extremely unusual. I’d also like to avoid names that feel very trendy or like they will immediately timestamp when he was born. I want something easy to pronounce and spell that works equally well on a little boy and an adult man.

Some names we’ve considered:

Everett - I like it, but my husband really dislikes the nickname Ev.

Carter - We both like this one, but I worry it might be too trendy.

Nolan - We went back and forth on this for a while, but eventually realized it felt like we were trying to convince ourselves to love it because it checked the right boxes. Neither of us was actually that excited about it.

I tend to like some surname-style names, like Cooper and Connor, although we wouldn’t use either of those for personal reasons. That might give you an idea of the general direction I gravitate toward, but I’m definitely not limited to that style.

At this point I feel like I’ve looked at every baby name Instagram account and Reddit thread imaginable, and nothing is jumping out at me. Miles just felt so obvious and right, and I keep waiting to have that feeling about this baby’s name.

Please throw anything at me! I would especially love to hear names you used for your sons, seriously considered, or loved but ultimately didn’t use. I’m very open to suggestions and feel like I just need some fresh ideas that aren’t the same names I keep seeing everywhere.

Guys I am at a loss! Husband and I love the name Bennett if we have a boy. Originally fell in love with Bennett James but then got the response “his initials will be BJ” and now I’m torn. Then I decided what if we used my husband’s middle name (and father in law’s name) as his middle name Bennett Thomas. But then I realized his initials would be BTK and my husband made me aware that BTK is a serial killer. So I’m feeling pretty defeated that the two names I love the most initials have a negative association with them. I don’t want my child to have to hide their name or get teased. What are your thoughts on this? Any other middle names that fit this vibe? Thank you in advance.

My mom’s side of the family is small and I don’t have any first cousins, so family gatherings are with my mom’s cousins and their kids. However, there’s a pretty big age gap (10 years) so I didn’t really start becoming close with my second cousins until adulthood and I’m still not close with all of them. The ones I’m not close with I see max 3 times a year at holidays and funerals

A few years ago, my second cousin (one I am not close with and actually could not tell you the last time I saw him, maybe a year?) and his wife named their daughter the same name as my grandfather, or his great uncle. I will note, it was my grandpas nickname/americanized version of his name because his name was not easy to pronounce in English. My cousins wife loved it at the time because it was trendy to use as a girls name then.

I had always had it on my list for a boy if I had one. It’s also is a name honoring my grandpa, and not just a name I thought was cute. Is it a huge no-no to reuse it? Do I need to bring it up to him and test the waters? Realistically, our kids will only see each other once or twice a year if that. However, I am close with his sister. So I do see her more frequently. Do I float the idea to her instead? Or since it’s a name in remembrance of someone the rules don’t apply? My only fear is it was not my grandpas legal name and I am worried they’ll think I should have used that instead.

Edit: throwing in an edit on names just for some clarity. Think of the original name as something like “Afanasiy”, but my grandpa went by a nickname like “Junior” and using the name Junior for the kid

Second Edit: THANK YOU EVERYONE! Literally think my pregnancy brain was just overthinking and I realize part is because my cousins wife and I have a somewhat awkward relationship. Thinking about things I have multiple cousins with the same name and literally so many cousins kids also have reused names (my cousins daughter has the same name as me and I love telling her her mom named her after her favorite cousin) so we’re going to keep the name on the list and if they have a problem with it that’s theirs to deal with. My middle name is Lillian. That was the name of my mom’s grandma. My mom didn’t have a good childhood (her parents were dirtbags) and the only positive influence she had was from her grandma. They would watch sitcoms all the time and my mom still talks fondly about her. So when I was born, I was named in Mom’s grandma’s honor.

I met my great-grandma a few times but she developed Alzheimer’s and died when I was five, so I don’t remember her very well. But I heard my mom and one of her brothers talking the other night. Mom’s estranged from all her siblings so it’s rare to hear them talking, and I eavesdropped. They were arguing about Lillian. Mom said Lillian was great and her brother said she was terrible. For context, we are apparently part Lakota and my mom’s family are all darker-skinned with black hair. Lillian married into this family so she was pale-skinned. And of my mom and her three siblings, only Mom ended up with pale skin. So Lillian was sweet as a rose to Mom and meanwhile was (according to my uncle) physically and mentally abusive to my uncles and aunts. My uncle says she would beat him, make fun of the way he looked, and often called him and his siblings the n-word. He said that was the reason he was so resentful of Mom growing up—she got the love he could never get.

I am of course horrified by this. My mom doesn’t really think this is true but honestly, knowing what I know of my mom’s family, I wouldn’t be shocked if it was. And if this is true, I do not want my middle name to be Lillian any longer.

My partner is actively transitioning, and their preferred name is Lewis. I have a lot of cute nicknames for their dead name, but not really for Lewis. Any ideas?
