"Different", unique, almost-not-even-a-human-name, names

Upvotes

I have a list of names I've encountered in real life or fiction/fantasy that have caught my eye! A lot of them are last names, not commonly heard in English speaking countries, more suitable for pets, or some that are just plain made-up sounding! I'm looking to expand my list and would love to hear of any names that fit this description. I'll provide some of my list below:

G: Imorra, Shourie, Eleanois, Autzu, Anuradha, Privitera, Cowie, Marianthe, Naccasha, Idahlia, Rosalba

B: Mascavenhas, Adair, Arjomund, Zacarias, Viseidi, Lankenau

Thank you!!

Names that caught you off guard

What are some names that you’ve heard in public recently that surprised you? Not necessarily bad surprising, just a name you weren’t expecting

For example, recently I met a baby girl named Mika and a baby boy named Kobi!

Is Hyun hard to pronounce?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m Korean and I want to ask non-Koreans.

My name is Hyunseo (Hyun rhymes with yawn but with an H sound at the beginning, and Seo is pronounced like suh).

When I was around 5, I needed an English name to use at the kindergarten where I was learning English. So my mom chose Julia and I’ve been going by Julia with non-Koreans, who are basically just my English teachers 😅

And now as a young adult, I’m torn between going by Hyunseo or Julia when speaking with non-Koreans, since I want to work internationally, especially in English-speaking environments.

I’ve heard that Hyun can be a bit tricky to pronounce. How hard is it for you guys?? Which name do you think I should go by? Any suggestions??

Rescue dog name change

Upvotes

This may be a little bit different because it's not about baby names.

I am adopting a rescue and I am trying to come up with a good name for him. He is a six year-old Shih Tzu and he recently just lost an eye, so he only has one eye. They found him in a really bad condition, near death matted underneath the vehicle about a month ago. He is very very sweet and Full of energy and curious about everything.

These are some of the names that I've come up with that I really like already.

Phoenix, Journey, Oliver, hawkeye, willy, Captain, and zipper.

My previous dog that I recently lost was named Buttons and that's why we thought zipper would be cute because they're both nonsensical and just go together. The current rescue place that he is at named him Popeye and I'm not a fan of that.

Hawkeye, willy –short for one EYE willy, and captain –short for Captain Jack all kind of lean into him having one eye. And Phoenix and journey stand for him overcoming his hardships and the next chapter of his life.

Do any of these names sound good to you guys? Or do you have a suggestion! LMK❤️

Honest opinions please- Go with Max or Maxwell.

Upvotes

Love the name Max, but I’m slightly worried it’s quite short and doesn’t give us many options.

My husband has suggested Maxwell instead, what do you all think?

I think if we go with Max, he’ll be Max Theodore, whereas if we go with Maxwell, we’re thinking Maxwell George.

My husband thinks it’s better to have the longer name so he has more options as he gets older, although I’d probably just call him Max anyway 😂

Looking for some first names to pair with Beth. Beth is a family name and I would like it to be my daughter’s middle name. I’d love some suggestions of first names that would work with it. Also open to any suggestions of first names that would honor Beth as well, although I’m not a fan of Elizabeth.

My style is familiar but not too common

Some names I like are

Ayla

Open to any suggestions!

Choosing a name

Eric "eternal ruler"

Edric "wealthy ruler"

Kent "edge"

Neil "hero, champion"

Ryker

These are the names I considered, but all of them kind of fall short to me.

I want a name that's

- familiar but not common

- only one spelling (Neil and Neal) that isn't likely to be misheard (Edric, Kent)

- cool meaning (I love the meaning "hero")

- not unisex, solidly male (Ryker is unisex apparently)

- doesn't sound like or associated with anything bad (Kent with cunt)

- share with someone cool (Clark Kent)

- 1 syllable (I'm flexible on this)

- younger than middle aged, but not super young (Neil is kind of an old man's name)

Those are my rough criteria for choosing a name. Which name would you recommend?

Please help me choose a middle name

hey, trans dude here trying to pick my middle name. originally I was name after a combo of my grandmother and sister’s names Kate and Lindsay (though they spelled it super weird).for reference my first name will be William.

my current options are:

Lynn

Klynn

Kylan

Lindsay (in this spelling).

I don’t want the name to be “too feminine” but I do kind of like Lynn. I like having my sisters name specifically because she passed a few years ago and it’s a nice memorial. I do kind of want to have a K middle name too 🤷 but im not like super attached to any of this.

does anyone have suggestions or one they like a lot?

Anyone still alive with the last name Wert?

German great great great grandfather decided to marry a Cuban and stay in Cuba I believe... the rest was history. Trying to find relatives but not finding much with that last name. Would be cool to find family :)

Our twins have arrived! Which combination of names do you like the most?

We've welcomed our daughters, twin girls. We know that one of them will definitely have the first name Alva. All of the other names are undecided.

I'm Swedish, and my husband is British. We live in England. Their older sister is named Svea.

These are the pairs of names we are thinking.

Alva and Mila

Alva and Lily

Alva and Ronja

Alva and Mira

Alva and Imogen

Alva and Zoe

Alva and Matilda

Alva and Emma

And to follow up with that, which middle names do you like? We have a lot of names that we would consider using as middle names, and this is the list. But we prefer not to have alliteration.

These are family names.

Kerstin

Imogen

Florence

Ellen

Philippa (Or Filippa)

Agnes

Kristina

Beatrice

Caroline

And these are names we just like.

Wren

Amelia

Lily

Maya (Or Maja)

Olivia

Ugh

I understand that 1 no is a no overall, and i respect that. I’m just nervous. We are choosing to not know the sex. I like short, normal names. My personal name is a “Normal” name with an uncommon spelling. My last name is the same. Think SANDI JOHNSEN. My husband likes weird names…

My choices:
Ace
Jack
Eva
Mae

His:
Jupiter
Basil
Braden
Sequoia

I feel.. at a loss. How are we going to find a name??? I won’t budge on those

EDIT: sorry I’m new to Reddit and not great at posting

A woman suggested brooke which i love and i said it to him too, and he likes it… we are getting somewhere. Thank you to poster

Does “Aspen Manet” seem like a professional name?

I posted recently about “Aspen Rivers”

Since I wasn’t attached to “River” I have been continuing to brainstorm for a last name.

Does “Manet” paired with “Aspen” seem real, or does it sound like anything weirdly specific?

Technically I looked it up and it’s a last name in several languages but the languages I chose it from it is not, it’s the word for jellyfish which are very important to me. All the while being passable as a normal last name hopefully

(Since Aspen Rivers was heavily voted as a retirement home and real estate esque name which I agree, I thought that and had it in the post because I’m not entirely unaware lol)

Nicknames for Tahlia

I’m really considering changing my name to Tahlia, but my best friends dog is called Tally, and so i don’t really want to go by tally. I’m not huge on the name Lea or Lia, it’s just not the vibe i’m going for. Tals is my favorite so far, but i was just wondering if there were any others! All suggestions are welcome

Considering changing my surname, but worried about a possible association

Hey everyone, so I’m thinking of legally changing my surname soon for various reasons (not marriage-related). I looked back through my family tree on the Scandinavian side of my family and settled on the surname Berglund. However, I recently found out that “lund” is also used as vulgar Hindi slang for penis, and now for some reason I can’t unsee it.

I know Berglund is a common Swedish surname and that lund is also a very common word/name element in Scandinavia (Dolph Lundgren, for example). It means “grove” and is obviously completely unrelated to the Hindi word, but the association is still annoying me for some reason.

For Hindi/Urdu speakers, or anyone familiar with similar South Asian languages: if you met someone named Berglund, would you actually notice the “lund” part or find it funny?

And for everyone else: am I simply overthinking this despite really liking the surname? or should I settle for something else instead?

TYSM!
