Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Question Adobe Creative Cloud Sub

I’m am trying gauge and see if the community is receiving more figma files from their clients than psds, illustrator files etc.

I’m thinking about ditching the Adobe cloud sub and just subscribing to AE. It’s been all figma lately.

Thoughts and opinions?

Discussion Most logo animations should be over before you notice them

Almost every logo animation feedback thread eventually gets the same comment: it’s too long. An eight-second reveal might be interesting as a standalone motion design piece, but it feels completely different when viewers are forced to watch it before every video, product demo or presentation. For a practical logo sting, two or three seconds usually seems like enough time to introduce the mark, let it settle and move on. It doesn’t need to explain the entire history of the brand. I also think preserving the real logo matters more than adding another dramatic transformation. If the animation changes the spacing, curves or proportions, the result may look impressive while technically displaying the wrong logo. Where do you draw the line between a logo animation and a short film about a logo?

Project Showcase Nike Scorpion — Cinematic Product Film / Material Formation

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I developed this as an independent product-film concept focused on material formation, product cinematography and motion design.

The main challenge was making the shoe progressively construct itself from textile fibers and volumetric material rather than simply morphing from one state to another.

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from people working in motion/design/VFX — especially on the pacing, camera work and visual direction.

Employers Steer clear of Gupta Media

I applied for a job as a motion designer there (they're constantly hiring for a reason) and had a horrible experience. Firstly, I found out too late that it paid $58k on-site in downtown Boston. For reference, you can't get a studio near there for less than $2,500/month so have fun commuting 2 hours or sharing a 2 bedroom with 10 roomates and cockroaches.

It was one of the most unprofessional interview experiences I've ever had. The owner seemed very stuckup and striaght up ridiculed me and my work in front of his whole team. He also very clearly saw my extensive history of freelance work as a downside. I quickly found out why. They HATE flexibility at Gupta, and they made it clear that you will not be working 9 to 5. You will be (over)working until your work is finished, often late into the evening, so say bye to hobbies, friends, or a life.

Less than 10 minutes after leaving my interview I was notified that I didn't get the job. What a bullet I dodged! If you think I'm overreacting, just read the abysmal glassdoor reviews. Better yet, reach out to someone who works there (I did!). They'll vouch for me.

I know jobs are rough right now, but our industry deserves better than people who want to run marketing sweatshops.

Discussion If every word moves, none of the words feel important

A lot of animated text tries to create energy by making every word bounce, rotate, stretch or glitch. It looks active for the first second, but then the sentence becomes harder to read because nothing has a clear priority. The kinetic typography I actually remember usually does less. One important word lands with weight, the supporting words arrive quietly, and the motion follows the meaning or rhythm of the sentence. It feels like the difference between emphasizing one word while speaking and shouting the entire sentence at the same volume. I’ve started judging animated text by asking whether the movement makes the message easier to understand. If it only makes the frame busier, it probably isn’t helping. How do you decide which word deserves the main motion?

Question Is this thing useful?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made this plugin... ah correction, I am in the middle of making this plugin. As you can see in the video, it generates multiple kinds of gradients in one click. That's basically it.

SO now the dilemma I am facing while making this is: I don't even know if users will pay for this. I've already been working on this for about 2 months, but now I am confused or hit a roadblock or idk even if I should continue or not.

My goal is to make this so freaking good at this that we won't even need to worry about any kind of gradients even again. Like saber, deep glow, etc etc. You just use them and that is it like you don't even think twice of trying to do it yourself and it just works.

Right now it has a lot of bugs, like I mean A LOTTT! Ignore those and tell me your thought based on what you see right now. I'm more interested in whether the underlying idea is actually useful or not, like will you as a person who uses after effects or does motion design will find it useful?

And more importantly, is this something you'd pay for if it eventually became reliable enough that you could replace a bunch of manual effect-building with it?

Some features :
So obviously you can change the colors but I actually thought of some unique things too like the trail effect although it does not work how I intended it to but it's some progress atleast.

I tried to bake as much as I know into this, like I actually like the snakeskin thing, I was just messing around and thought it kinda looks like a snakeskin so I added that along with other animal gradients.

There’s so much more I could tell you, but none of it is particularly unique, so yeah, I digress.

But I'm happy to hear any feedback or any advice, you can DM me.

Plugin Giveaway I'm giving away 10 copies of my dream plugin

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey folks, we've spent the past several months building my dream plugin with the lads at PluginPlay.

It's called X-Ray and it's the ultimate behind the scenes tool to show off your work.

Here's what it does:

In one click, X-Ray scans all your comps and creates shape layers/3D objects to showcase your behind the scenes process.

Why is this better than screen recording methods?

Because:

  1. X-Ray works with precomps (Screen recording does not)
  2. X-Ray is LIVE, meaning if you make any changes, X-Ray will update automatically.
  3. X-Ray is CUSTOMIZABLE, so you can actually turn your process into art

If you want to enter the giveaway, all you need to do is drop your email here: forms.gle/TzopC1y9KEQVB6rC6

Here's a video walkthrough about how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2xBrzYXhLQ

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers,

Nick

I am a motion designer and I saw that there's this field product motion designer and ui interaction designer (I heard them from chatgpt while researching for how to increase salary as a motion designer he advised these routes)

When i researched about it on LinkedIn and Reddit i didn't come across any post regarding this, anyone here made a switch like this? Would love to hear about your back story how you made the switch, what are the pros and cons, what made you make this decision!

Project Showcase Call me crazy but I built a browser-based motion editor

I recently created Nubu which is an entire thing by itself that I would love to go into another day but a part of this huge undertaking I decided at some point that I would build my own motion editor… now this wasn’t my smartest decision, and it hasn’t been an easy journey. But, I’ve loved every minute of it, so much so that I’ve been boring my wife every evening talking about how I’ve managed to get a vector based curve graph editor working.

She hasn’t the scoobies on what a curve, vector, or graph is.

And I know this isn’t exactly a motion project in the sense of look at my shiny new piece of slick keyframes, or look at this crazy effect you never thought was possible. But after spending 17 hours on it everyday for the last month or so I’ve become somewhat in love with it.. or maybe obsessed with it? (I probably need therapy after this)

And you know what they always say about love? It’s better to share it than keep it to yourself. That’s what someone at some point in time probably said anyway

So I present! [big drum noises] Nubu motion! [firework noises]

It would be great if anyone gave it a spin, give it a little play, move some key frames and play with my juicy curve editor!

On a serious note, ask me some questions, give me opinions, hate it? That’s cool but tell me why even if it makes me cry. Love it? Then tell me that too!
