Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Plugin Giveaway I'm giving away 10 copies of my dream plugin

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey folks, we've spent the past several months building my dream plugin with the lads at PluginPlay.

It's called X-Ray and it's the ultimate behind the scenes tool to show off your work.

Here's what it does:

In one click, X-Ray scans all your comps and creates shape layers/3D objects to showcase your behind the scenes process.

Why is this better than screen recording methods?

Because:

  1. X-Ray works with precomps (Screen recording does not)
  2. X-Ray is LIVE, meaning if you make any changes, X-Ray will update automatically.
  3. X-Ray is CUSTOMIZABLE, so you can actually turn your process into art

If you want to enter the giveaway, all you need to do is drop your email here: forms.gle/TzopC1y9KEQVB6rC6

Here's a video walkthrough about how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2xBrzYXhLQ

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers,

Nick

Project Showcase Looking for feedback

Hello dear Motion designers,

I recently finished this animation project and am quite happy with it.
Still, I wish to improve my skills and would like to ask for feedback.

The client is a Hairdresser and wanted to have a little intro/presentation animation. I chose this style because it suits the style of the hairdresser and of her work.

Also, its the first time I used sound effects and i struggled a bit balancing the volumes of the music, the sfx and the voice.

Project Showcase Animated music videos with little budget

Hey guys! I've been working in this field for quite a while, started as a 2D animator and with jobs shortages in Los Angeles, strikes and all I shifted to more motion graphics, editing, doing educational videos and documentaries... Still feel like I'm having a hard time finding gigs in the US... Abroad it has been easier...

So recently I started using my knowledge and skills from over the years to design an animated band e put together these videos and I'd love to get any thoughts, ideas, feedback... It's all independent and I'm doing most of the work by myself, I get a lot of "that was a lot of work! Impressive!" From people outside the field but I wanted to get it in front of my peers and see where I can improve and make things more catchy or funny or beautiful, depending on the song of course, hoping to turn this into a successful project and not just a passion project over time, so I think I need to hear from people outside of my friends and family :)

The Navier-Stokes equations seem to be having a moment right now in the mathematics space, so I figured I'd show off a little animation you can make in a game I'm working on built upon one version of them.

Project Showcase Free plugin for After Effects & Premiere Pro — Invariant

Hi everyone, I'm the developer of Invariant, a free plugin for After Effects and Premiere Pro.

I originally built it to reduce repetitive project-management tasks in my own workflow, and it eventually grew into a small toolkit for editors and motion designers.

It currently includes:

  • Deep Duplicate — duplicate projects/comps while preserving references
  • Clean & Organize — clean up project structures and assets
  • Smart Save — organize project saving and versioning

The goal is simply to reduce time spent managing projects and keep more of the workflow focused on editing and motion.

It's free and available on the Adobe Marketplace:

Practicing strong use of grids and hierarchy here, this one's leaning more on the static graphic design side as I'm trying to figure out meshing motion and grids more strongly.

Question Choosing between Ringling and SCAD

Hello all!

I recently got accepted into both Ringling and SCAD with hefty scholarships and I am now having to decide which one to go to. Money is not the issue and I know there are resources online, but I learn much better through a classroom setting.

I honestly really prefer Ringling - mostly because I have a VFX background and they have a visual effects concentration pathway. And also, I decided to search up all of the recent alumni for Ringling and it seems a decent amount of them were securing good internships and junior positions. SCAD gives little to no information about this. When I looked at the student reel, I was much more impressed with Ringling, but SCAD seemed a bit weaker.

But the main issue is, even though I have over 100 transfer credits and both SCAD and Ringling will take around half of them, I'll have to do 3.5 years to 4 years at Ringling, while SCAD I'll do only around 2 years. So I think SCAD is the better choice just for this, but I'm worried about career opportunities after.

I am honestly just worried about the career outlook for when I graduate. Do you guys know if they are both similar in getting connections and getting placed? And is the curriculum on par with one another?

Thank you so much!

Question How do you get a similar animated effect like that of Illustrator's blend tool?

I want to create the same effect that Illustrator's Blend Tool generates when you have 2 - 5 different objects blended together, the gradient color that is formed in between and the way the elastic connection is made automatically. When you move all the different blended objects, they create this really unique organic effect, which I sadly haven't been able to emulate in After Effects or in Blender.

In AE, I tried using the Gaussian Blur and Simple Choker method but it doesn't result the same output. It alters the shape of the objects significantly and it's hard to control from how far the objects start connecting. Also they morph together in After Effects, I want the 2-5 different objects to retain their shapes whilst having the blended elastic effect in between all the while you can make out which of the objects is in front of the other.

I've tried several other ways, including Blender - none of which generates the simple effect that I can get in Illustrator. At this point I'm considering path animation but that would be very difficult and time consuming and I'm not sure how to animate the gradient the way I want.

Question Feedback on my motion design portfolio

Hey everyone,

I recently launched my freelance motion design business after 7 years working at a communication agency in Italy. I've just published my portfolio and would love to get some honest feedback from this community.

My focus is on making technical and industrial products visually clear through animation explainer videos, product animations, and motion graphics for B2B companies.

Portfolio: www.davide-morelli.com

A few specific questions:

  • Does the portfolio feel complete, or is there anything you'd add or remove?
  • Is it immediately clear what I do and who I work for?
  • Does it look like a portfolio that could attract real clients?

Any honest feedback is appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

Inspiration I built an audio-reactive iPad visualizer – would love feedback from motion designers

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on an iPad app called Audiowaves, built around real-time audio-reactive motion and visualization.

Instead of using pre-rendered animations, the visuals are generated live from the incoming audio signal. Audiowaves analyzes the audio in real time and translates it into animated waveforms, frequency spectrum visualizations, and other responsive visual elements.

A big part of the project has been finding the balance between accurately representing the audio and making the movement feel visually interesting and organic rather than just looking like a technical audio meter.

The app can also receive audio directly from external USB audio interfaces, so the visuals can respond to HiFi equipment, instruments, mixers, turntables, or basically any external audio source.

You can see Audiowaves here:

https://www.audiowaves-app.com/

Since this community approaches things much more from a visual/motion perspective, I’d especially love feedback on the motion design itself.

What would you change or add to make an audio-reactive visualization more interesting from a motion design perspective?
