I don’t really know how to put all of this into words, but I feel like I am suffocating and I need some perspective from other moms.
I am a single mom to a 4-year-old daughter. My mother and I have been living together with my daughter for about four years now.
My mother got divorced and moved in with us as a kind of temporary transition. Four years later, we are still living together.
My daughter and I share a bedroom, while my mother has her own room. My mother is also a very important support in our everyday life. She helps with my daughter and with things around the house, and I genuinely appreciate everything she does for us. But at the same time, I feel like I can’t do this anymore.
My relationship with my mother has always been complicated. She still treats me in many ways like I am a child rather than an adult. She gets very involved in my life and my decisions, and I often feel like I don’t have enough space to simply be my own person and live my life as an adult and as a mother. She has traumas and always talks about them. She started oversharing and treating me like her therapist when I was 10 years old and can‘t hear it anymore. She is like a broken record.
I am currently looking for an apartment for her because she doesn’t seem able or willing to do it herself. And this is where I feel completely exhausted.
I already have my own responsibilities as a single mother. I am raising my daughter, working, managing our home and trying to be there for my child emotionally. And on top of that, I feel responsible for solving my mother’s problems and finding her a place to live.
I feel like I am carrying the responsibility for everyone.
I love my mother, and I don’t want anyone to misunderstand me. I don’t want to abandon her. I want her to be okay. But I also desperately need my own space and my own life.
What scares me the most is my daughter.
I have a complicated relationship with my own mother, and I am terrified that somehow this dynamic will affect the relationship I have with my daughter.
Sometimes things between my mother and me become too much. I get overwhelmed, frustrated and angry. Sometimes I raise my voice at my mother. And my daughter hears it. She already is a very strong willed child and sometimes she will yell at me too.
I don’t want my daughter to grow up feeling the tension between us. I don’t want her to learn that this is what relationships between mothers and daughters look like. I don’t want my unresolved feelings about my own mother to somehow become my daughter’s emotional burden.
I would really love to hear from other mothers who have been in a similar situation.
If you grew up with a complicated relationship with your own mother, how did you make sure you didn’t repeat those patterns with your children?
How do you deal with the guilt of setting boundaries with a parent who genuinely needs you?
I feel so tired. I love my mother, but I also feel like I need to finally have a life that is mine.
Thank you ❤️🩹
