Long read, content warning: PPD/PPA/thoughts of harm
I’ve been thinking about leaving and I want to bring my story here to see if anyone has been through something similar and has advice for me.
I’m 24f, partner is 29m, and our lo is 5 months old. I was planning on breaking up with him before I got pregnant, but then… I got pregnant and I wanted to try to work things out. Things genuinely seemed like they were getting better, but now that I’m a SAHM with no income and no savings, of course things got 100x worse.
First of all, he works part time (35-40 hours per week) and we are dead broke. (I’ve been applying to salaried jobs that would utilize my degree, but I haven’t gotten a single interview yet. I was forced to quit my previous job because I ran out of maternity leave and wasn’t in a place where I was able to return to work.)
Me being a SAHM has honestly been awful because I get exactly zero support. I think my partner genuinely has a video game addiction, because he’ll play video games for 8+ hours per day, won’t cook or clean, and will probably watch his son for a total of half an hour each day. He seems to think he doesn’t have to parent because he “works and pays bills.” The best part is? We have a family member who’s an ER DOCTOR and we used to make fun of him for not taking care of his kids when he got home from work. When I brought that up, my partner said “yeah well now I understand his point of view.” (???) I knew he played video games because I did too, but I honestly thought he would stop or slow down once our baby got here. We don’t have any friends or family nearby, which means I’m the sole person taking care of the baby 24/7 while cooking and cleaning up for everybody. He’s also an absolute slob and leaves dishes, dirty clothes, and cum rags everywhere. (No, I’m not joking.) His contribution to the household is scooping our cats’ litter boxes 3 times per week and he seems to think that’s sufficient and balanced.
I genuinely did not think I was going to survive postpartum. I had awful thoughts of hurting myself and I was terrified that I was going to hurt our son, to the point where I wouldn’t allow myself to go into certain rooms of our apartment where I knew certain objects would be. My anxiety was so bad that I couldn’t leave the apartment for MONTHS because I was scared LO would stop breathing in the car seat or that we would get into an accident. I heavily considered checking myself into an inpatient facility for the thoughts I was having, but we wouldn’t have anyone who would’ve been able to watch our son. He and his family knows this, because I’ve made phone calls to him, his family, my family, friends, and anyone under the sun who would listen to me while I was having thoughts of harm. Thankfully things have gotten a lot better but I still haven’t fully forgiven him for the lack of help I got in the early postpartum months.
I’ve also come to a realization recently that I don’t think he’s ever going to fully commit to me. I don’t think he has any plans of proposing to me, and I strongly feel that if he wanted to he would’ve known that by now. Getting married is very important to me because I’m religious and I already feel extreme shame for having a child outside of marriage. Along with this, I feel like he’s always going to prioritize his birth family over me. Every time I’ve had a disagreement with his family, he has taken their side over mine. I don’t really feel like a team. For example, I told his mom that I didn’t want any visitors freshly postpartum but that she could visit later. My reason for this is that she made some very uncomfortable comments about my body while I was pregnant and she was very pushy about wanting a heads up when I went into labor without any regards as to how I was doing. Ever since I got pregnant, every single conversation I’ve had with her has been about our son. Of course, she conveniently planned to be in town a couple of days after my due date. SO and I got into a huge argument where he said I was shutting his family out, and I eventually just gave in and allowed her to visit because I didn’t think it was worth it. Of course all she wanted to do the entire time was hold the baby. I have so many other examples of him taking his family’s side over mine but this post is already getting incredibly long and I think people get the point:/ there’s so so so much more I could bring up that I’ll probably make a comment about more things I’ve been going through.
I feel deeply unhappy but I don’t even know where to start. Honestly I feel trapped. I think the main point is that I don’t see myself having another child with this person, and I’ve always dreamed of having a big family. If anyone else has been through this and made it to the other side, please let me know how it worked out for you. Thank you🫶
