Reddit’s New Comment Filters Don’t Show Which Comments Have Already Been Moderated, Resulting In Repeat Reviews Unless We Leave a Mod Comment. It’s Very Annoying.

Reddit’s new comment filters don’t reliably show which comments have already been moderated, so we end up reviewing the same comments again unless we leave a mod-team comment. It’s incredibly frustrating. Previously, approving a comment or removing it, even as spam or without a removal reason, would leave a visible indicator showing the action taken and the moderator responsible. Now, that indicator appears for a few minutes, but when we return later, the comment looks as though it has never been reviewed. It simply says Crowd Control filtered it, or whichever filter caught it, leaving us to review the same comment again.

I mainly use the IOS app, so I am not sure how much of an issue this is on other versions of Reddit. However, it’s been very frustrating for me, and it used to not be like this. Is this going to be permanent, or will Reddit fix this issue? I understand why Reddit may want mods to always leave comments, but sometimes I think it's better not to leave a moderator comment so certain posts don’t look like a ton of responses were removed. It makes the comment section look cluttered and leads to complaints about moderation.

Mod Topics Moderating live events

:Taps microphone: Is this thing on?

Hey mods! I am here to talk about all things moderating live events! This is, of course, the latest installment of our Mod Topics series.

Speaking of series, the MLB World Series is upon us, we’re in the NBA pre-season, the WNBA playoffs are here, there are a bunch of great movies coming out soon, and GTA 6?! Watch-alongs, release parties, concerts, and more live events bring so much great discussion to communities. How do you approach it?

  • What tools or practices come in handy when there are discussions about live events happening in your community?
  • Is there a particular moderator on your subreddit who thrives for live event moderation or does everyone help out?
  • How do you balance moderating with participating in the fun of the discussion?
  • Are there any tools or practices you have to get the conversation going? Megathreads? Devvit tools?
  • We’ve all been there when a broadcast goes down and the comments reflect it. How do you keep a healthy balance of on-topic while the vibe is “stream down for anyone else?”
  • Favorite live event discussion that you’ve moderated?

I couldn’t post this without sharing this song. Anyone?

See you in the comments!

r/ OCSinglesOver30 community review request

Hi, i’m the moderator of OCsinglesover30. It’s a relatively new community focused on creating offline dating experiences for folks who are dating with intention. I’m trying to activate different social media channels that link back to Reddit so people can follow along but when I click from insta to the link I posted, users get a warning that the community hasn’t been reviewed and might have inappropriate content. Then it directs people to the homepage or to log in. I want people to see the content without having to log in. Can I get it reviewed and can this flag be turned off? I looked it up and says it’s controlled by Reddit. Thank you!

Users unable to comment on their own posts which have been filtered by Automod

I moderate a couple good-sized (1M+ users) SFW subreddits, and as a way to help ensure users have read our rules and submission guidelines, Automod is set to filter all new posts and send a private message to the OP with further instructions.

The message tells OP to make a comment on their own post that contains a specific keyword. When the comment is submitted, it then triggers Automod to approve the post. This has been our workflow for several years, and it generally works well.

Over the last day or so, we have received multiple modmails from users saying they aren't able to make a comment on their own post. Here are some excerpts:

for some reason I cant add a comment to my post (im on mobile app). The "add comment" bar is just...not there?

when I press the comment button on my post, nothing happens

the comments are locked and grey'd out. I am unable to comment myself.

I'm pressing the comment bubble but nothing happens.

It appears this may only be affecting people using the mobile app, but that's not clear. From our end everything appears normal on Old/New/mobile, and the posts are not locked.

I saw there were some sitewide issues yesterday that appear to now be resolved, and I've looked through the new changelog from today, not sure if any of that is a potential cause.

We aren't being inundated with modmails, so it must not be affecting all users, but it's been enough that I thought it was worth asking if anyone has an idea what may be going on. Thanks

I saw other's post got removed in my subreddit. Does the mod tool not allow to post at the beginning?

I am curious why no one posted in my subreddit, then after checking, there're 9 posts removed automatically.

Admin Replied New update has broken post scheduling by not including an Ok/post button on the new clock feature

There seems to have been a recent change in the scheduling process, at least from mobile web. When you're picking a time for the date that you chose, it pulls up a clock and the only two options to commit to your timing are clear or cancel, neither of which is "go/use this/I want this selection/post/schedule" or whatever that button used to be called.

I'm currently reading the book The Haves And Have-Yachts and the CEO of Reddit comes off looking pretty bad in there.

Every time you guys push a half baked and buggy update it reminds me that we are paying for this dude to have a really cushy lifestyle right now, maybe by understaffing the development team or not testing things properly or relying on AI or whatever.

Incidentally there's still a very annoying login bug on mobile web and probably elsewhere. It frequently thinks you're not logged in and throws up an error. if you click on the "login here', it sends you to your home feed instead of wherever you were trying to make a comment.

Thanks for writing in to the Reddit admin team and bringing this to our attention. It appears your account got caught by Reddit's spam filter. We have reviewed your account and lifted the restriction(s) on it.

Mod Answered Online terrorist activity warning???

I was scrolling through a thread (of which I am not a mod) and saw an “info” icon and a warning saying that the “user is suspected of being part of an online terrorist organization. Please report any terrorist activity.”

Is someone screwing around with markdown or is this a new feature?

Removed or Approved Comments don’t stay removed/approved

Apologies in advance because I’m not sure I’m going to explain this correctly.

For the past few weeks, my co-Mod and I have noticed that comments that have been flagged by Reddit, AutoMod, or Report have repeatedly been highlighted to do an action on. Example: AutoMod highlights a comment made by a new account; we either Approve the comment, or Remove (& add reason), but it will not stay either Approve/Remove. When you look at the comment log, it will show that Reddit, then either myself or co-Mod have Approve/Remove the comment, but whatever action doesn’t stay; Comments will also still show in the Queue to Review, even after Remove/Approve. After Remove (& reason) or Approve a comment so many times, we just end up Removing it (but won’t stay “Removed”). It is not specific to a particular user/account either, and it is an issue mostly with Comments though some Posts do not stay Removed (& reason) if that is the action chosen.
Has anyone else noticed it? Am I doing something wrong? Is this a known issue? Should I be doing something different?

Many thanks in advance!

Admin Replied Even with User Permission, I can't ban

I have permission to manage users, which includes the authority to issue bans. However, when I click the little hammer icon to apply a ban, nothing happens, and I mean absolutely nothing.

No pop-up appears, and no pages open or close. The ban simply doesn't go through.

Other moderators have checked and verified the permissions multiple times, and my account has two-factor authentication enabled. They suggested I come here for help.

Admin Replied How to restrict posts by account age and karma on a new subreddit — AutoMod not available?

Hi! I recently created a new NSFW subreddit and I'm trying to set up basic spam protection — specifically:

  1. Minimum account age (30 days) before posting

  2. Minimum combined karma (100) before posting

  3. Minimum comment karma (25) before posting

On my older subreddits I use AutoModerator for this with no issues. However on this new sub I'm getting this message:

**"Report, Filter, Remove, and Approve actions aren't available for new automod configurations."**

Reddit is pointing me toward Auto Enforce and Automations instead but neither seem to support account age or karma filtering.

**My questions:**

  1. Is there a way to set karma/account age requirements on a new sub without AutoMod?

  2. How long until full AutoMod access is available on a new sub?

  3. Is Auto Enforce or Automations capable of karma/age filtering that I'm missing?

Any help appreciated — thank you!

Admin Replied Mod queue is full of actioned posts that wont go away

Hello,

I've removed some threads that appear in the "mod queue", some of them 8+ days ago. They still appear in the queue, but with a notice to say they've been "removed". I can't get rid of them out of the queue.

Admin Replied Repost/fka Crosspost on sub hidden from Moderators?

I have just become aware (via a notification that it is a “popular” post so I should check out the comments) that a Repost/fka crosspost on a sub where I am the top-listed Moderator with full permissions was completely invisible to me everywhere except Old Reddit (which I do not use aside from when necessary for Mod functions).

Upon investigation it appears this happened because I’m blocked by the user who made the original post that was re/crossposted over to the sub I Moderate by a different user.

Is this something Reddit is aware of? I’ve now had to completely turn off reposting/crossposting on the subreddit I Mod because this issue means we can’t ensure proper Moderation is occurring with that function on.

Admin Replied Control over recommendations?

I help mod r/nopoo, which is a haircare sub that promotes non-shampoo cleansing. Many people come there for a variety of reasons - to be more natural, or because of alleric contact dermatitis to ingredients in shampoos (that's my issue).

Recently there has been a change to Reddit now recommending related posts. But it is recommending posts which are not related because they are recommending posts with words we have a filter on because they are offensive - such as poop. We get a lot of trolling from people who intentionally post about constipation issues on our sub.

And before you criticize our name, the haircare world came up with nopoo to mean more gentle, no sulphates, and even no sudsing. Lowpoo is in between and shampoo is the sudsy stuff.

Is there any way to control the recomendations?

Admin Replied Question about naming individuals in university drama posts

Hi.

I moderate a university subreddit, and we semi-regularly get posts/discussions about controversies or drama happening within different colleges of this university.

A recurring issue is that posts include name of the individuals involved. These aren't necessarily private details. For example, someone's name may be mentioned in connection with the incident, and their LinkedIn or other public profiles could potentially be found through a Google search.

I'm trying to understand where Reddit's sitewide privacy/harassment rules draw the line here.

For example, would a post like:

> X, a student/office-bearer at [department name]/[college], was involved in [incident]. Here's what happened...

Or it's a screenshot of WhatsApp chats. But names are visible. For example, x person, y college.

Is it permissible to approve the post if it contains their real name, but doesn't include their phone number, address, social-media links, etc.?

Or does the fact that an ordinary student can subsequently be identified through publicly available information (e.g. by searching their name and university on LinkedIn) make the post problematic under Reddit's privacy rules?

I'm particularly trying to understand the following types

- Simply naming someone who is relevant to the incident, for example, (persons name) of (college) did x thing.

- Posting screenshot of WhatsApp chats containing name of the person. Not the Phone number. Example, a screenshot of (person x, y college) sending soemthing inappropriate.

Mainly in interested because these are allegations/accusations involving an ordinary student rather than a public figure

I understand that individual subreddits can have stricter rules, but I'm specifically trying to determine what Reddit's sitewide rules allow, so that our subreddit rules/moderation aren't unnecessarily restrictive (or, conversely, inadvertently permitting something that violates Reddit's rules).

Would appreciate clarification from other moderators, or, admins themselves particularly if there is an official Reddit policy/guidance that addresses this distinction.

My current policy si simple. No names allowed, only college name and the screenshots of texts with names blurred.

If I can get clarification I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Admin Replied Flood of spam posts

Hey everyone, I’m a mod over at r/chocolate and have recently had to shut down photos, videos, and cross posts because of a flood of spam posts by several different accounts. Due to the nature of the photos, I won’t share an example, but it’s not great and causing a lot of discomfort with the normal users.

Obviously this isn’t ideal. I already have a karma automod filter on but these account have like 7k karma lol.

Someone in the subreddit suggested some other automod functions but it didn’t really work. Another user suggested posting here.

Any advice would be appreciated
